Описание: The dawn of the modern warship This interesting, illustrated work concerns the considerable variety of ships of war that were designed and launched during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The author takes as his starting point the era of the American Civil War and the time of the emergence of Monitors, ironclads, early submersibles and, indeed, the coming of powered ships which would shortly consign the age of naval sail to history. In warfare there can be no room for sentiment since every nation must be able to bring armaments to bear equal at least to any potential enemy. So on the oceans, just as it was with land armies, the navies of the world raced into the industrial age and machine powered warfare. The new vessels adopted a host of innovations in construction, capability, function, weaponry and ordnance and quickly replaced famous fighting ships of sail and a mode of fighting that had endured for centuries. This overview, covers the period up to 1887 and examines the warships of the world's navies. The expansive text is supported by many line drawings of the vessels described as well as technical and cross section drawings. A number of statistical charts are also included, making this an indispensable reference work for all those interested in naval warfare during the second half of the 19th century. During the Vietnam War, 270 U.S. Navy and four Royal Australian Navy warships served at various times on the gunline. Within this armada were the battleship New Jersey, ten cruisers, 212 destroyers, fifty destroyer escorts, and the inshore fire support ship Carronade. When necessary, naval guns poured out round after round, until their barrels overheated and turned red, exterior paint blistered, and rifled-barrel liners were worn smooth. Allied troops locked in battle with North Vietnamese Army or Viet Cong troops in South Vietnam were grateful for artillery support from the sea. When North Vietnam launched the Easter Offensive across the DMZ in 1972, eight to ten ships in line, abreast, often firing simultaneously and around the clock, delivered desperately needed fire support. At one point, over forty cruisers and destroyers were serving together on the gunline. Warships conducting SEA DRAGON and LINEBACKER operations--naval bombardment of military targets along the coast of North Vietnam--came under fire on a number of occasions. Runs in to within five miles of a hostile shore, to strike Vinh, Haiphong, and other targets, often preceded duels with shore batteries. Most such action occurred at mission completion as ships zigzagged, while racing seaward at high speed to clear the coast, to throw off the aim of enemy gunners. This book highlights the grit, determination, and heroism of young men--many who would likely have preferred the laid-back lifestyle of the 1960s, were it not for their country's call to arms. This book covers the bulk of Beijing's Navy including destroyers, frigates, and corvettes. These categories have seen more growth since 2005 than any other. The rapid growth of ships in these categories is in keeping with the Military Strategy China released in 2015 which states, "... the PLA Navy (PLAN) will gradually shift its focus from "offshore waters defense" to the combination of "offshore waters defense" with "open seas protection," and build a combined, multi-functional and efficient marine combat force structure." The launching of new ships is in addition to retiring very old ships (pre-1990) and modernizing ships built after that. U.S. Navy ships are larger, and the U.S. has more aircraft carriers - China has one active, one being fitted out and 2 (or 3) being built. We added China's aircraft carriers tho there is precious little information out there. It does appear that CV-19 will be nuclear powered and include lasers and rail guns as defensive weapons. Updated in late September to include transport ships (Type 071, 072, 073, 074 and 075). Also added the Type 22 Missile Boat since there are at least 83 of those. Nice littoral area boat, and the sheer numbers could overwhelm an opponent, but not very effective without good air defense. Check out the rail gun mounted on the Type 072III Transport Ship. This book does not go into the ships of the PLA Navy Reserve Force, the People's Armed Police (PAP) or the China Militia (中国民). Those could be another book if there is enough interest).
