Описание: Get to know the master figurative painter Lucian Freud who depicted humanity with a poet`s gaze and a perfectionist`s eye for detail.
Lucian Freud (1922-2011), widely regarded as the greatest figurative painter of his time, spent seven months painting a portrait of the art critic Martin Gayford. The daily narrative of their encounters takes the reader into that most private place, the artist's studio, and to the heart of the working methods of this modern master--both technical and subtly psychological. From Man with a Blue Scarf emerges an understanding of what a portrait is, but something else is also created: a portrait, in words, of Freud himself. This is not a biography, but a series of close-ups: the artist at work and in conversation in restaurants, taxis, and his studio. It takes one into the company of the painter who was a friend and contemporary of Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, and Francis Bacon, as well as writers such as George Orwell and W. H. Auden.
Now for the first time as a compact paperback, this book is illustrated with works by Lucian Freud, telling photographs of Freud in his studio, and images by great artists of the past, such as Vincent van Gogh and Titian, who are discussed by Freud and Gayford.
Full of wry observations, the book reveals how it feels to pose for a remarkable artist and become a work of art.

Описание: Surveying Lucian Freud s entire career and including many of his most important paintings, this generously illustrated book also explores his interest in historical art and the influence it had on the artist's work. Known chiefly for his remarkable portrait and figure paintings of psychological depth and unsparing scrutiny, Lucian Freud (1922 2011) was one of the most important and influential artists of his generation. His subjects, many of whom were portrayed repeatedly over many years, included his large family and circle of close friends, working-class associates and blue-blooded aristocrats. Accompanying an exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, this book presents the highlights of Freud's working life, a period of almost 70 years, and includes many of his most significant and well-known paintings: self-portraits, portraits of his family, friends and fellow artists, commissions, landscapes and still lives. The selection of works was made with the close personal involvement of the artist during the months prior to his death in July 2011 and includes works from museums and private collections throughout the world. This book also delves into Freud's lifelong interest in historical art, in painters and draughtsmen such as Chardin, Durer, Holbein, Rubens, Rembrandt, Titian, Velazquez and Watteau, and in sculptors going back to Egyptian antiquity. In addition to the numerous illustrations, the book includes essays by renowned curators from the Musee du Louvre, Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the Neues Museum, Berlin, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
A True History (Ancient Greek: Ἀληθῆ διηγήματα, Alēthē diēgēmata; Latin: Vera Historia or Latin: Verae Historiae) is a novel written in the second century AD by Lucian of Samosata, a Greek-speaking author of Assyrian descent. The novel is a satire of outlandish tales that had been reported in ancient sources, particularly those that presented fantastic or mythical events as if they were true. It is Lucian's best-known work.
It is the earliest known work of fiction to include travel to outer space, alien lifeforms, and interplanetary warfare. It has been described as "the first known text that could be called science fiction". However, the work does not fit into typical literary genres: its multilayered plot and its characters have been interpreted as belonging to science fiction, fantasy, satire or parody, and have been the subjects of scholarly debate.
Example in this book:
It is a commonplace of criticism that Lucian was the first of the moderns, but in truth he is near to our time because of all the ancients he is nearest to his own. With Petronius he shared the discovery that there is material for literature in the debased and various life of every day-that to the seeing eye the individual is more wonderful in colour and complexity than the severely simple abstraction of the poets. He replaced the tradition, respected of his fathers, by an observation more vivid and less pedantic than the note-book of the naturalist. He set the world in the dry light of truth, and since the vanity of mankind is a constant factor throughout the ages, there is scarce a page of Lucian's writing that wears the faded air of antiquity. His personages are as familiar to-day as they were in the second century, because, with his pitiless determination to unravel the tangled skein of human folly, he never blinded his vision to their true qualities. And the multiplicity of his interest is as fresh as his penetration. Nothing came amiss to his eager curiosity. For the first time in the history of literature (with the doubtful exception of Cicero) we encounter a writer whose ceaseless activity includes the world. While others had declared themselves poets, historians, philosophers, Lucian comes forth as a man of letters. Had he lived to-day, he would have edited a newspaper, written leading articles, and kept his name ever before the public in the magazines. For he possessed the qualities, if he avoided the defects, of the journalist. His phrase had not been worn by constant use to imbecility; his sentences were not marred by the association of commonness; his style was still his own and fit for the expression of a personal view. But he noted such types and incidents as make an immediate, if perennial, appeal, and to study him is to be convinced that literature and journalism are not necessarily divorced.
The profession was new, and with the joy of the innovator Lucian was never tired of inventing new genres. Romance, criticism, satire-he mastered them all. In Toxaris and The Ass he proves with what delicacy and restraint he could handle the story. His ill-omened apprenticeship to a sculptor gave him that taste and feeling for art which he turned to so admirable an account. He was, in fact, the first of the art-critics, and he pursued the craft with an easy unconsciousness of the heritage he bequeathed to the world. True, he is silent concerning the technical practice of the Greeks; true, he leaves us in profound ignorance of the art of Zeuxis, whose secrets he might have revealed, had he been less a man of letters.

Описание: This catalogue focuses on the artist's graphic production from the period after 1982 with works from the UBS Art Collection. Freud's (1922-2011) portraits-often of the same subjects he painted-manage to encompass his own psyche, the models' responses and our own reactions. "My work," he said, "is purely autobiographical. It is about myself and my surroundings." In an etching, the subject is scored into a metal plate covered with a wax mixture, which, after immersion in an acid bath, exposes the scorings, which are left as black lines in the finished print. Readers get even closer access to this involved and nontraditional printmaking process, as the volume is supplemented with ten stages of a print from a private collection in England.

Описание:
Lucian was a particularly wry satirist, though writing in the 2nd Century, his parody of Homer and Herodotus remains eminently readable and enjoyable. Taking sharp aim at mythology and outlandish religious texts, Lucian spins an intentionally ludicrous yarn which includes visits to rivers of milk and islands of cheese. The book is also remarkable for being the first known work to include scenes taking place in outer space.
