Описание: This volume provides an assessment of the biodiversity and ecosystem services in one of the "hottest" biodiversity hotspots of the world, the south-eastern Andes of Ecuador. The presented results can also be applied to other forested tropical mountain areas.
Описание: This book offers a global analysis of how urbanization and urban growth impact biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems. It develops a new theoretical framework for urban sustainability and resilience.

Описание: Savannas are the most widespread ecosystem in the tropics and as such are subjected to great human pressure that may result in massive soil degradation. It is shown that savannas are enormously diverse and that four factors determine the function of savanna ecosystems: Plant Available Moisture;
Описание: This study provides an overview of the roles that the biodiversity found in and around food and agricultural production systems play in the supply of ecosystem services. These range from provisioning services, such as the supply of food, fuel and fibre, to cultural services, including recreation and aesthetic enjoyment, and regulating services (e.g. pollination, carbon sequestration, pest control and nutrient cycling).
Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture corresponds to “the variety and variability of animals, plants and micro-organisms at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels that sustain the ecosystem structures, functions and processes in and around production systems, and that provide food and non-food agricultural products.” The study considers a range of ecosystem services across the “provisioning”, “regulating”, “supporting”, “habitat” and “cultural” categories.
The examples presented in the report show that the benefits that a given food and agricultural production unit (i.e. farm, fish farm, forest stand, fishery or livestock holding) gains from biodiversity generally come both from within and from outside the production unit. They also show that the biodiversity present in and around food and agricultural production systems often provides ecosystem services whose benefits are felt far beyond the food and agriculture sector (and in some cases far away in geographical terms).

Описание: This book brings together the latest information on the rapid advances and developments in the field of aquatic ecology. India is very rich in terms of biological diversity due to its wide range of habitats and climatic conditions. It is home to as much as 7 per cent of the world’s animal species, although it only accounts for about 2 per cent of the total landmass. The present work on biodiversity, ecology and conservation of aquatic resources represents original research in the field of aquatic biodiversity, wetland ecology and its applications with reference to the country’s aquatic resources. There are 19 chapters, each contributed by an expert in his/her particular field and offering novel approaches to various topics in the area of aquatic ecosystems.

Описание: The book aims to capture, describe and convey the current significance, the values and potentials of urban biodiversity and ecosystem services to scientists and professionals in the context of sustainable urban development and ongoing urbanization processes. Current developments, different approaches and future challenges in the competition of green spaces and urban land consumption in China and Germany are elaborated, discussed and illustrated within case studies and good practice examples. The strategic goal is a long-term appreciation of the potentials and increased consideration of urban green spaces in city planning and development. This book provides tangible recommendations for urban planners, politicians and stakeholders in the fields of green infrastructure at the interface of environment and urban landscape.

Описание: This book deals with the new concept of biodiversity offsets. The aim of offsetting schemes is to achieve no let loss or even net gain of biodiversity. Offsets obey a mitigation hierarchy and reflect the precautionary and polluter-pays principle in regard to project impacts. Readers gain insights into current debates on biodiversity policies, with top experts outlining theoretical principles and the latest research findings. At the same time the focus is on practical application and case studies. Today there is a lively international discussion among practitioners and scientists on the optimal legal framework, metrics and design of habitat banks to ensure the success of biodiversity offsets and to minimise the risks of failure or misuse. Contributing to the debate, this volume presents the activities and practices of biodiversity offsetting already implemented in Europe in selected EU member states, and the lessons that can be learnt from them. Readers may be surprised at how much experience already exists in these countries. A further aim of the book is to offer grounded insights on the road ahead, and foster a more intensive and fruitful discussion on how offsetting can be extended and improved upon, so that it becomes a key and effective component of Europe’s biodiversity conservation policy framework.
Описание: Ecosystems provide services that are crucial and beneficial to the human population. The management and conservation of these services can assure the wellbeing of the local population. Climate Change and Its Impact on Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity in Arid and Semi-Arid Zones is an essential reference source that studies the effects of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystem services in dry regions and examines various strategic local, national, and international policy developments to help overcome these impacts. Featuring research on topics such as poverty reduction, climate change, and adaption policies, this book is ideally designed for environmentalists, policymakers, government officials, academicians, researchers, and technology developers who want to improve their understanding of climate change impact, vulnerability, and sustainability, and the strategic role of adaptation and mitigation.

Описание: Although some effects of various insects will continue to be viewed as undesirable, the idea that insects should, or can, be "managed," this book explores reasons that may be unrealistic. It explores an approach to suppressing insect populations, considers information on the multiple, often compensatory, effects of insects on particular resource

Описание: Concern is growing that iconic ecosystems, such as coral reefs and tropical rain forests, might suddenly collapse as a result of human interference. Invaluable to students and researchers, this volume provides the first scientific account of the ecological mechanisms associated with the collapse of ecosystems and their subsequent recovery.
