Описание: The Poetics of Genre in the Contemporary Novel investigates the role of genre in the contemporary novel: taking its departure from the observation that numerous contemporary novelists make use of popular genre influences in what are still widely considered to be literary novels, it sketches the uses, the work, and the value of genre. It suggests the value of a critical look at texts' genre use for an analysis of the contemporary moment. From this, it develops a broader perspective, suggesting the value of genre criticism and taking into view traditional genres such as the bildungsroman and the metafictional novel as well as the kinds of amalgamated forms which have recently come to prominence. In essays discussing a wide range of authors from Steven Hall to Bret Easton Ellis to Colson Whitehead, the contributors to the volume develop their own readings of genre's work and valence in the contemporary novel.
Описание: In this account of how the novel reorients philosophy toward the meaning of existence, Yi-Ping Ong shows that the existentialists discovered a radical way of thinking about the relation between the form of the novel and the nature of self-knowledge, freedom, and the world. At stake are the conditions under which knowledge of existence is possible.

Описание: This volume marks an exhilarating tour through the mesmerizing and labyrinthine fictional world of the Nobel Prize-winning Turkish author Orhan Pamuk. Despite being ranked alongside Marquez, Cortazar, Calvino, Borges and Eco, Pamuk is yet to receive due critical attention in the Anglophone world, where he has millions of readers. This book takes the reader on a fascinating ride through Pamuk's novels from The Silent House, written in the early Eighties, to the recently published The Red Haired Woman.
The nine novels that form the focus of this study straddle a period of more than three decades that witnessed the emergence of Pamuk as Turkey's foremost novelist and a master fabulist. The book details the chemistry of the thematics and architectonics of Pamuk's craft in a style shorn of dry pedantry and jargon trotting. Examining the intricate pattern of his creative topography in the light of theories ranging from psychoanalysis to spectral criticism, it represents a timely and illuminating contribution to the study of contemporary fiction.

Описание: Questions about the origin of the Greek love novel - itself the precursor of the love novel in Europe - have intrigued scholars for centuries. Stefan Tilg proposes a new solution to this ancient puzzle by arguing for a personal inventor of the genre, Chariton of Aphrodisias, whose Narratives about Callirhoe, dates from the mid-first century AD.

Описание: The popularity of romance fiction is such that it constitutes nearly one quarter of new paperback fiction printed in the world. This fresh look at the romantic fiction seeks to discover the reason for its appeal by combining analysis of the poetics of the genre with a study of the real reader`s intervention.
"In the Greek romances," writes David Konstan, "sighs, tears, and suicide attempts are as characteristic of the male as of the female in distress; ruses, disguises, and outright violence in defense of one's chastity are as much the part of the female as of the male." Exploring how erotic love is represented in ancient amatory literature, Konstan points to the symmetry in the passion of the hero and heroine as a unique feature of the Greek novel: they fall mutually in love, they are of approximately the same age and social class, and their reciprocal attachment ends in marriage. He shows how the plots of the novels are perfectly adapted to expressing this symmetry and how, because of their structure, they differ from classical epic, elegy, comedy, tragedy, and other genres, including modern novels ranging from Sidney to Harlequin romances.
Using works like Chaereas and Callirhoe and Daphnis and Chloe, Konstan examines such issues as pederasty, the role of eros in both marital and nonmarital love, and the ancient Greek concept of fidelity. He reveals how the novelistic formula of sexual symmetry reverses the pattern of all other ancient genres, where erotic desire appears one-sided and unequal and is often viewed as either a weakness or an aggressive, conquering power. Konstan's approach draws upon theories concerning the nature of sexuality in the ancient world, reflected in the work of Michel Foucault, David Halperin, and John Winkler. By probing this anxiety and its narrative effects, Strange Gods uncovers how a central Protestant belief exerts its influence over stories about love and marriage.
