Описание: Alex Chase-Levenson examines British engagement with the Mediterranean quarantine system from 1780 to 1860, demonstrating how quarantine fostered early forms of European integration, laid the foundation for modern public health, and shaped Western perceptions of the `East`.
The Yellow Star That Wasn't: Scandinavia, Miami, and Me takes the reader from the author's childhood as a Swedish Protestant girl in war-torn Finland to Miami, where, faced with a stream of questions about the Jews in Scandinavia, she discovers that she had to leave home to find a home. Interweaving stories and historical facts about the wartime Jews in Scandinavia, the book is a combination of memoir and history, much of it evolved from the interest expressed by listeners at her ongoing speaking engagements.

Описание:
Yellow Star, Red Star asks why Holocaust memory continues to be so deeply troubled—ignored, appropriated, and obfuscated—throughout Eastern Europe, even though it was in those lands that most of the extermination campaign occurred. As part of accession to the European Union, Jelena Suboti? shows, East European states were required to adopt, participate in, and contribute to the established Western narrative of the Holocaust. This requirement created anxiety and resentment in post-communist states: Holocaust memory replaced communist terror as the dominant narrative in Eastern Europe, focusing instead on predominantly Jewish suffering in World War II. Influencing the European Union's own memory politics and legislation in the process, post-communist states have attempted to reconcile these two memories by pursuing new strategies of Holocaust remembrance. The memory, symbols, and imagery of the Holocaust have been appropriated to represent crimes of communism.
Yellow Star, Red Star presents in-depth accounts of Holocaust remembrance practices in Serbia, Croatia, and Lithuania, and extends the discussion to other East European states. The book demonstrates how countries of the region used Holocaust remembrance as a political strategy to resolve their contemporary "ontological insecurities"—insecurities about their identities, about their international status, and about their relationships with other international actors. As Suboti? concludes, Holocaust memory in Eastern Europe has never been about the Holocaust or about the desire to remember the past, whether during communism or in its aftermath. Rather, it has been about managing national identities in a precarious and uncertain world.

Описание:
Exploring the nexus of American Studies and the Medical Humanities, this book examines the interdisciplinary interfaces between disease and American cultures and literatures. It traces the appropriation of yellow fever to legitimize the young nation and its embeddedness in discourses of race and gender from the late 18th until the end of the 19th century. Previously untapped textual and visual archives provide a heterogeneous base of canonical as well as previously disregarded works that are analyzed for yellow fever’s metaphorical and actual potential of risk and crisis. As a literary history of yellow fever epidemics, it firmly establishes the ideological, socio-political, visual, and cultural processing of the disease, which figures as invasive, inexplicable Other.
Yellow Fever Years has received the Peter Lang Nachwuchspreis 2015.

Описание: "Little yellow lies" is a gripping story about life and the choices that define it. At the end of the day, do you fight for what you believe in? Or will the pressure make you fold and abandon your values? In this story, these are the choices that Mike had to face growing up in Brooklyn. Throughout this deeply personal autobiography, Ming presents his life through the eyes of Mike Lee, just coming home from prison and trying to make a life for himself. The obstacles Mike faces and his handling of them dictates the course of his life as he tries to better himself and find a place in this world. While trying to get his life together, a series of events leads Mike down a familiar path. The path towards redemption, healing, and growth, is never linear. This content in this book isnt meant to glorify a mans past, but to share his mistakes and show how growth is still possible. As Mike deals with consequences of his actions, he finds himself at a crossroads - redemption or recidivism.
