Описание: Through this unconventional rereading of the familiar biblical text, the book attempts to extract a different ethic, one that challenges the Kierkegaardian demand of blind faith in an all-knowing moral God and offers in its stead an alternative, everyday ethic.
This hermeneutical case-study illustrates the complexities of using biblical materials to shed light upon present-day concerns. The specific situation addressed is the recent evangelical controversy regarding gender roles. A significant strand of this debate concerns the relationship between gender and the doctrine of God. This proposition is derived from 1 Corinthians 11.
Whilst aspects of this argument are criticized, Lakey also argues that questions of God and gender are related. 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 articulates sexual difference using the metaphysical language of antiquity, thereby situating the sexes vis- -vis each other as microcosms of God and Christ vis- -vis the cosmos. For Paul, the Church circumscribes that part of the cosmos able to express its creaturely relationship to God.
However, modern interpreters arguably cannot share Paul's cosmological and anthropological assumptions. Lakey points us towards forging a solution for how to interpret as Christian Scripture a text that invites its readers to assume a stance that is now problematic for many modern Christians.
Описание: This book examines the whole of Scripture as the unfolding marriage covenant between God and his people. The book demonstrates that God's marriage to his people is the central theme of the Bible. Eighteenth-century Reformed pastor Jonathan Edwards captured that perspective when he observed: The creation of the world seems to have been especially for this end, that the eternal Son of God might obtain a spouse . . . to whom he might . . . pour forth all that immense fountain of . . . love and grace that was in his heart and that in this way God might be glorified. This book traces the divine marriage from God's promises to Abraham, to the betrothal covenant that includes the Ten Commandments, to Israel's breaking of the covenant as described by the prophets, to the new covenant in Christ, and finally to the consummation of the divine marriage covenant in Revelation at the wedding of the Lamb. God instituted the marriage of a man and a woman in Genesis 2 to be an image of God's divine marriage with his people. Therefore, it is not a coincidence that both the Gospel and marriage are under attack in our culture. Human marriage cannot be rightly understood apart from the Gospel and the Gospel cannot be fully understood apart from marriage. This book enables Christians, whether single or married, to appreciate in a much fuller way the depth and nature of God's love for his bride. Seeing how the divine marriage defines and shapes human marriage also presents a clearer understanding of the spiritual importance of human marriage, inspiring Christians to pursue marriages that more faithfully reflect God's design. This book proclaims Scripture's message of God's unrelenting, irrevocable love for his bride and invites the church to respond. Susan A. Pauline Christianity sprang to life in a world of imperial imagery. In the streets and at the thoroughfares, in the market places and on its public buildings and monuments, and especially on its coins the Roman Empire's imperial iconographers displayed imagery that aimed to persuade the Empire's diverse and mostly illiterate inhabitants that Rome had a divinely appointed right to rule the world and to be honoured and celebrated for its dominion.
Harry O. Maier places the later, often contested, letters and theology associated with Paul in the social and political context of the Roman Empire's visual culture of politics and persuasion to show how followers of the apostle visualized the reign of Christ in ways consistent with central themes of imperial iconography. They drew on the Empire's picture language to celebrate the dominion and victory of the divine Son, Jesus, to persuade their audiences to honour his dominion with praise and thanksgiving.
Key to this imperial embrace were Colossians, Ephesians, and the Pastoral Epistles. Yet these letters remain neglected territory in consideration of engagement with and reflection of imperial political ideals and goals amongst Paul and his followers. This book fills a gap in scholarly work on Paul and Empire by taking up each contested letter in turn to investigate how several of its main themes reflect motifs found in imperial images.

This book centers on Revelation 13, where the monstrous elements of Satan's endtime plan are revealed. While most of what is written in this section of the Bible could be dismissed as satanic wonders or merely natural happenings, what is occurring on the earth today seems to indicate this is not the case. Technology may play a prominent role in Satan's endtime plot, and as those days approach the role of technology will become ever more clear. For, consider this: At the time the Bible was written, it was simply not possible to convey in God's Word today's technology and the technology that will be available at the close of this age. There were simply no words in existence to write of what science is producing today. Practically everything in our current technology would have seemed miraculous, magical, or demonic. An automobile? Impossible. A computer? Wizardry. By necessity, all modern technology is absent from the Bible - but that doesn't mean it isn't implied, or even present in some way. This book explores how technology and scripture meet during the events of the endtime.

Описание:
The central aim of Water as an Image of the Spirit in the Johannine Literature is to propose two sets of indicators that can be used to assess the symbolic reference of water imagery in the Johannine literature. The first set, comprised of five indicators, can be used to decide whether a given instance of water imagery in the Johannine literature represents the Spirit. The other set, comprised of six indicators, can be used to determine whether a given instance of water imagery has a symbolic meaning instead of or in addition to its literal meaning. The validity of these indicators is demonstrated by applying them to six disputed water passages (1 John 5:6–8; Rev. 22:1–2; John 3:5, 4:10–14, 6:35, and 19:34). The author draws on narrative and exegetical methodologies to stage new claims that will incite further debate and discussion regarding the role of water imagery—and symbolic devices more broadly—in the Johannine texts.
Описание: Before you even attempt to read the 12,000 words in the book of Revelation you may be baffled, frustrated and terrified. Rev It Up - Image by Image bypasses these words with illustrations and offers a visual perspective of God's majesty, the beauty of Christ's saving ministry, the plight of humanity, your destiny and the certainty of eternity. There is nothing pleasurable in seeing the wrath of God, but for those who cry out for justice, there will be vindication; for those who are tired of seeing wrong called right and right called wrong, righteousness will prevail; for those who long for the old to pass, for the hurts to stop and for the new to come, they will be filled with immutable hope. Joy will surge for those who trust in the Lord. It may seem as if evil is winning, the wicked are soaring and the ungodly are towering, but the Truth, in the person of Christ, will overcome and rule in righteousness as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords for all eternity. Those who love Christ, shall commune with Him forever. As you enjoy these striking illustrations, I pray you draw ever closer to the Lord. Blessed be His name
Описание: The body of the mother is both everywhere and nowhere in the Christian imagination. Western Christianity has long viewed the mother's body as a vessel. Through her, nothing less than the sin and the salvation of all humanity entered history. Eve birthed children into sin, and the Virgin Mary brought forth the savior of the world. Christian theologians across the centuries have largely focused on these two idealized mothers at the expense of actual biological mothers. By the same token, modern feminist theology has shied away from seeing mothers as feminist agents in God-talk in its drive toward equity in religious leadership. With In the Image of Her, Amy Marga argues that a feminist, maternal theology is an overlooked and yet critical perspective for our understanding of God's work in the world. Far from only being vessels of new creation, the bodies of mothers are distinct ecosystems of God's creative agency and demonstrate how God's work involves both cooperation and competition. Marga seeks to broaden the Christian imagination about women and creativity, and to liberate actual biological mothers from myths of Christian motherhood. Two kinds of historical evidence give us some sense of what Christians imagined about mothering and women who were mothers: discourse from within the all-male theological writing establishment, and documented practices of women around the events of motherhood, such as magical customs around pregnancy and birth; the pilgrimages women took in order to pray for safe delivery; and ecclesiastical rituals such as postpartum rites of purification. It may seem that mothers' perspectives and practices did not influence the Christian theological imagination. Marga, however, maps historical and theological developments around Christian perspectives on mothering to show that Christian mothers—along with and in spite of male-dominated institutions and ideas—have continued to shape their own motherhoods, creatively and boldly adapting the received traditions of the faith to their circumstances for their own survival and the survival of their children.

Описание: The Hebrew Bible and art reside at the core of this book, which analyzes the iconographic representation of several women of the Bible. The contributors consider the ways in which the biblical texts regarding these women had been read and understood throughout time and the means by which they were represented. Each study also explores the different values associated with these representations according to the problems, worries and concerns of each period.
Drawing upon disciplines such as theology, philology or history of art, the essays within this volume provide a cross-sectional, plural and rich approach. In focusing upon iconographic representation, numerous visual cultures of the last millennium are explored, and special emphasis is placed upon several integral biblical women such as Bathsheba, Moses' mother, the Pharaoh's Daughter, Ruth, Naomi and Deborah, and their lasting influence upon Western art and culture. This book pursues an understanding of the history of the transmission and reception of the Bible in general, and of the women of the Old Testament in particular.
