Описание: Edward Carpenter (29 August 1844 - 28 June 1929) was an English socialist poet, philosopher, anthologist, and early activist for rights for homosexuals. A poet and writer, he was a close friend of Rabindranath Tagore, and a friend of Walt Whitman. He corresponded with many famous figures such as Annie Besant, Isadora Duncan, Havelock Ellis, Roger Fry, Mahatma Gandhi, Keir Hardie, J. K. Kinney, Jack London, George Merrill, E. D. Morel, William Morris, Edward R. Pease, John Ruskin, and Olive Schreiner. As a philosopher he was particularly known for his publication of Civilisation, Its Cause and Cure in which he proposes that civilisation is a form of disease that human societies pass through. An early advocate of sexual freedoms, he had an influence on both D. H. Lawrence and Sri Aurobindo, and inspired E. M. Forster's novel Maurice. Early life: Born in Hove in Sussex, Carpenter was educated at nearby Brighton College where his father was a governor. His brothers Charles, George and Alfred also went to school there. When he was ten, he displayed a flair for the piano. His academic ability appeared relatively late in his youth, but was sufficient to earn him a place at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Whilst there he began to explore his feelings for men. One of the most notable examples of this is his close friendship with Edward Anthony Beck (later Master of Trinity Hall), which, according to Carpenter, had "a touch of romance". Beck eventually ended their friendship, causing Carpenter great emotional heartache. Carpenter graduated as 10th Wrangler in 1868.After university he joined the Church of England as a curate, "as a convention rather than out of deep Conviction". In 1871 he was invited to become tutor to the royal princes George Frederick (late King George V) and his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, but declined the position. The job instead went to his lifelong friend and fellow Cambridge student John Neale Dalton.Carpenter continued to visit Dalton while he was tutor, and was presented with photographs of themselves by the princes. In the following years he experienced an increasing sense of dissatisfaction with his life in the church and university, and became weary of what he saw as the hypocrisy of Victorian society. He found great solace in reading poetry, later remarking that his discovery of the work of Walt Whitman caused "a profound change" in him. (My Days and Dreams p. 64).....................
This ambitious book examines Saint Oscar Romero's words to understand how his thoughts fit into the broader context of Catholic theology.
On March 24, 1980, Archbishop ?scar Romero was assassinated as he celebrated mass in El Salvador. He was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis on October 14, 2018. Edgardo Col?n-Emeric explores the life and thought of Romero and his theological vision, which finds its focus in the mystery of the transfiguration.
Romero is now understood to be one of the founders of liberation theology, which interprets scripture through the plight of the poor. His theological vision is most succinctly expressed by his saying, “Gloria Dei, vivens pauper”: “The glory of God is the poor who lives.” God’s glory was first revealed through Christ to a landless tenant farmer, a market woman, and an unemployed laborer, and they received the power to shine from the church to the world.
Col?n-Emeric’s study is an exercise in what Latino/a theologians call ressourcement from the margins, or a return to theological foundations. One of the first Latin American Church Fathers, Romero’s theological vision is a sign of the emergence of Christianity in the Global South from “reflection” Church to “source” Church. The hope for this study is that scholars in the fields of theology, religious studies, and Latin American studies will be captivated by the doctrine of this humble pastor and inspired to think more clearly and act more decisively in solidarity with the poor.

Описание: Brown proposes a theory of poetic metaphor that attempts to account for literature's complex role in the discovery and creation of significant patterns within both language and life. He shows that while poetic and conceptual modes of discover are different, they are nevertheless mutually interdependent. In particular, Brown offers a new view of the way in which theological and metaphysical concepts grow out of, and are transfigured by, metaphoric expression. This view is expressed in a detailed and original analysis of the structure and dynamics of T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets that lies at the heart of the study.Originally published in 1983.A UNC Press Enduring Edition - UNC Press Enduring Editions use the latest in digital technology to make available again books from our distinguished backlist that were previously out of print. Описание: Why is our world in such upheaval today? What or who is causing it, and where are we headed? The Transfiguration of Our World (Expanded Edition) gives a comprehensive overview of the world situation, why we are having such problems, and the solutions now being put in place. According to author Gordon Asher Davidson, the world is being guided by an interdimensional Light Alliance working closely with many members of humanity to release the hold of darkness on our planet. In order to loosen the impasse currently gripping the world, it is essential for us to recognize and understand the purpose of higher beings and civilizations from beyond our planet. Their intention is to help us co-create a sustainable and spiritually fulfilling civilization based on love and aligned with a higher spiritual plan for human evolution. The Transfiguration of Our World offers new insights into the history and current state of the ancient struggle between the forces of light and darkness on our planet; the cosmic decree following the events of 9/11, which brought about a galactic response that offset the power of the dark cabal; the inflowing powerful, new spiritual energies and resulting movements for planetary liberation; and a detailed outline of the unfolding plan now being implemented for regenerating our planetary life. The plan for Earth's evolution includes financial, political and media reforms, a more enlightened use of resources, the regeneration of the environment, and a renaissance of spiritual cooperation between humanity and the subtle spiritual worlds, including galactic civilizations. Based on 20 years of deep meditation and contact with higher beings by the author, this book provides a corrective lens for humanity's vision of the future. Some of the topics explored are: - The formation and cooperative work of the Galactic and Earth Light Alliances - How these alliances were formed, their relationship to Earth's leadership and the plan for the transfiguration of Earth and humanity. - How the matrix of love is being activated - The awakening of humanity to the omnipresent, infinite matrix of love energy which transcends all dimensional limitations of time and space and creates an indissoluble bond between all worlds. - The struggle between the light and dark forces on Earth - How the spiritual Masters and higher beings have offset the influence of the dark forces over millennia. - The true significance of 9/11 - How this event totally transformed the rules of the game for humanity's evolution and catalyzed a galactic response. - Detailed plans for the reorganizing of world systems - Transforming the structures of financial and political systems and reorganizing the use of resources. - What each of us can do - How to use your co-creative power, raise your energy frequency, and use meditation and other techniques to cooperate with the Light Alliance.

Описание: An early realist novel by Stanislaw Lem, taking place in a Polish psychiatric hospital during World War II.
Taking place within the confines of a psychiatric hospital, Stanislaw Lem's The Hospital of the Transfiguration tells the story of a young doctor working in a Polish asylum during World War II. At first the asylum seems like a bucolic refuge, but a series of sinister encounters and incidents reveal an underlying brutality. The doctor begins to seek relief in the strange conversation of the poet Sekulowski, who is posing as a patient in a bid for safety from the occupying German forces. Meanwhile, Resistance fighters stockpile weapons in the surrounding woods.
A very early work by Lem, The Hospital of the Transfiguration is partly autobiographical, drawing on the author's experiences as a medical student. Written in 1948, it was suppressed by Polish censors and not published until 1955. The censorship of this realist novel is partly what led Lem to focus on science fiction and nonfiction for the rest of his career.
Описание: This volume addresses the interdependencies between visual technologies and epistemology with regard to our perception of the medical body. It explores the relationships between the imagination, the body, and concrete forms of visual representations: Ranging from the Renaissance paradigm of anatomy, to Foucault’s “birth of the clinic” and the institutionalised construction of a “medical gaze”; from “visual” archives of madness, psychiatric art collections, the politicisation and economisation of the body, to the post-human in mass media representations.
Contributions to this volume investigate medical bodies as historical, technological, and political constructs, constituted where knowledge formation and visual cultures intersect.
