The macro-societal events against social injustice that have occurred recently have brought increasing attention to the problems of inequality in society. Specifically, social movements and events such as the Black Lives Matter and Stop Asian Hate, the Supreme Court’s ruling against the legality of employment discrimination against the LGBT population, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the growing diversity of the workforce serve as impetus for more diverse and engaging work contexts. Within the field of education, racial diversity issues such as the paucity of educators of color in the field, workload disparity workload across teacher demographics, the handling of student discipline and employment discrimination have been frequently noted as warranting attention to create more diverse and inclusive workspaces.
The first of two volumes, Leadership in Turbulent Times draws upon cutting edge theories and evidence-based strategies by integrating conceptual and empirical work addressing educational leadership in these unprecedented and turbulent times, with a particular focus on the P-12 education workplace.

Описание: All too often, in a hurried attempt to "catch up," diversity training can create division among staff or place undue burdens on a handful of employees. Instead, academic libraries need approaches to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that position these priorities as ongoing institutional and professional goals. This book's model programs will help academic libraries do exactly that, sharing a variety of initiatives that possess clear goals, demonstrable outcomes, and reproducible strategies. Librarians, administrators, and directors will all benefit from the programs detailed inside, which include such topics asa university library's community of practice for interactions and learning around DEI;cultural competency training to create more welcoming instruction spaces;student workshops on literature searches that mitigate bias;overcoming the historic tendency to marginalize LGBTQ representation in archives;a curriculum and design workshop that moved from discussing social values to embedding them in actions;the founding of a library-led LGBT club for students at a rural community college;a liberal arts college's retention-boosting program for first-generation students;tailoring a collection and library services to the unique needs of student veterans; anda framework for moving from diversity to equity and inclusion, toward a goal of social justice. With this volume's model programs to guide them, academic libraries and their staff can successfully strengthen their own DEI initiatives.

What do international male business leaders have to say about gender diversity, the rise of talented women into management and the opportunities for the sexes to work together harmoniously in boardrooms – as well as the obstacles that stand in the way?
When most people think manager, they think male. Boardrooms around the world are still dominated by ‘alpha’ men and their assertive, decisive leadership styles. Meanwhile, their female counterparts, alpha women, remain underrepresented in almost every country. Many women feel they’ve been excluded and are calling for equality. This book offers a fresh perspective on gender roles that moves away from the old paradigm of male domination and female victimhood. It argues that companies that want to succeed need to productively combine and leverage off the strengths offered by men and women. It covers how mixed leadership teams can be made the norm in international companies. To find some answers, Bettina Al-Sadik-Lowinski interviewed senior male executives from eleven countries. These ‘alpha men’ agree that women and their abilities should be better represented on company boards. They believe the current imbalance is due to a mix of talented women’s reluctance to pursue their career ambitions along with the barriers created by existing power structures. Male managers fear losing face and being shown up by strong women. They want recognition, rather than aggression, from their female colleagues. The interviewees also discuss what they see as women’s strengths, such as their positive, calming influence in male-dominated meetings, and comment on sensitive topics such as #MeToo and the influence of ‘erotic capital’ and ‘old boys’ networks’. The book presents the men’s views in their own words, complemented by alternative perspectives from top female executives.
Al-Sadik-Lowinski’s analysis shows how both sexes can work together in international companies to build a brighter, sustainable future.
Alpha Males and Alpha Females seeks to promote greater equality at senior levels in global companies, with mixed leadership teams made up of both qualified men and qualified women. It gives women who are interested in pursuing a management career an insight into men’s views, as well as advice on their personal career development. And it suggests strategies that executives can adopt to strengthen diversity, build mixed leadership teams and secure their companies’ long-term success.
Описание: What is the future of the contemporary university and for those who lead them?Considering leadership in the broadest sense, including academic leadership (teaching and research) as well as leadership practices of those in formal management positions, Jill Blackmore outlines how multiple pressures on universities have produced leadership practices in management and research which are more corporate than collegial, and which discourage many academics from aspiring to leadership. She uses a range of theoretical tools, informed by critical and feminist organisational studies, to unpack higher education and how it is being transformed in ways that undermine its core work of teaching and research. Drawing from three Australian university case studies, this book uses leadership as a lens through which to investigate the effects of restructuring of the higher education sector which have impacted differently on academic identities and careers.
