Описание: Powerful Devices studies spiritual warfare performances as an apparatus for disestablishing structures of power and knowledge, and establishing righteousness in their stead. Drawing on performance studies emphasis on radicality and breaking of social norms as devices of social transformation, the book demonstrates how Christian groups with dominant cultural power but who perceive themselves as embattled wield the ideas of performance activism. Combining religious studies with ethnography, Powerful Devices explores Nigerian Pentecostals and US Evangelicals praxis of transnational spiritual warfare. By closely studying spiritual warfare prayers as a device, Powerful Devices shows how the rituals of prayer enable an apprehension of time, paradigms of self-enhancement, and the subversion of politics and authority. A critical intervention, Powerful Devices explores charismatic Christianitys relationship to science and secular authority, technology and temporality, neoliberalism, and reactionary ideology.

Описание:

Updated edition with two new chapters

The Bible is clear that we face three different types of opposition while attempting to successfully navigate life as Ambassadors for Christ. Our opposition is identified in Scripture as "the world" (1 John 2:15-17), "the flesh" (Romans 7:15-25), and "the devil" (1 Peter 5:8-9). The sad reality is that too many Christians lose more battles than they win and endure their walk with God rather than enjoy it because they often don't recognize how opposition through spiritual warfare actually works.

More importantly, they have no idea how to effectively and efficiently respond to these attacks. Scripture nowhere indicates that a wish, a hope, a clich , or a sincere guess represent adequate responses to attacks from these three very real enemies. Christians must be strategic in their responses to these clearly defined enemies, learning how to fight biblically rather than just sincerely.

In Spiritual Warfare, Dr. Karl Payne--pastor of Leadership Development and Discipleship at Antioch Bible Church and former Chaplain for the NFL's Seattle Seahawks--has written a guidebook for recognizing and responding to spiritual warfare that is simple, biblical, and transferable. Pragmatically speaking, the materials in this book are biblically sound, battle tested, and they work.

As Christians we are supposed to live life as victors, not victims. It is past time we learn how to consistently walk our talk in the midst of conflict rather than passively sing songs or daydream about courageous Christian living.

Описание:

When the demon Jade was sent to Earth, Sarah Michel was one of the first women he encountered, and almost made him lose sight of his mission. Luckily, he was able to convince Dr. Andrew Bailey, a dear friend of hers, to betray her--a decision which eliminated the growing problem Sarah was becoming.
Now, four years later with a fresh start, Jade is completely focused on his agenda and has serious plans that start with the 2020 Presidential Election. Sporting a new identity, and assured the past is far behind him, nothing will get in his way.
There's only one problem: Sarah was not the only loose end.
Jessica, a young girl Jade encountered years ago, recognizes him. She remembers him as the last person to see her brother, Max, before her family found him dead. In her quest to learn the truth about her brother's final moments, she will unearth secrets about a spiritual world she never knew existed. But, can she stop Jade? Or will he end her?

Описание: this volume explores theoretical discourses in which religion is used to legitimize political violence. It examines the ways in which Christianity and Islam are utilized for political ends, in particular how violence is used (or abused) as an expedient to justify political action. This research focuses on premodern as well as contemporary discourses in the Middle East and Latin America, identifying patterns frequently used to justify the deployment of violence in both hegemonic and anti-hegemonic discourses. In addition, it explores how premodern arguments and authorities are utilized and transformed in order to legitimize contemporary violence as well as the ways in which the use of religion as a means to justify violence alters the nature of conflicts that are not otherwise explicitly religious. It argues that most past and present conflicts, even if the discourses about them are conducted in religious terms, have origins other than religion and/or blend religion with other causes, namely socio-economic and political injustice and inequality. Understanding the use and abuse of religion to justify violence is a prerequisite to discerning the nature of a conflict and might thus contribute to conflict resolution.

Описание: In this deeply revealing and engaging autobiography, Herb Silverman tells his iconoclastic life story. He takes the reader from his childhood as an Orthodox Jew in Philadelphia, where he stopped fasting on Yom Kippur to test God's existence, to his adult life in the heart of the Bible Belt, where he became a legendary figure within America's secular activist community and remains one of its most beloved leaders. Never one to shy from controversy, Silverman relates many of his high-profile battles with the Religious Right, including his decision to run for governor of South Carolina to challenge the state's constitutional provision that prohibited atheists from holding public office. He is equally candid about the battles he has faced in the secular community itself and the many hurdles he overcame in the historic step of politically uniting the country's major secular, humanist, and atheist groups under the banner of the Secular Coalition for America. Silverman combines a satirist's pen with an activist's passion, revealing in humorous and often moving ways a personal side few know. Candidate Without a Prayer offers an intimate portrait of a central player in today's increasingly heated culture wars.

Описание: For any country that has a large and diverse migrant population, it is a struggle to connect these people to the country's institutions, including the healthcare system, which can be overwhelming in its complexity. Cultural and language barriers often make it difficult for doctors to fully understand the symptoms of their migrant patients, reach accurate diagnoses, or properly treat their suffering. Thus, medical practitioners must attempt new, innovative practices in order to reach patients where they are and convince them to accept treatment from doctors they don't totally understand. In France, Serge Bouznah and Catherine Lewertowski have pioneered one such practice—that of transcultural mediation.    Drawn from two decades of their experience with transcultural mediation, Spirits in the Consulting Room tells the stories of eight patients—mainly migrants—and their families. Each chapter focuses on a different patient, and Christelle, Djibril, Moncef, Alhassane, Jacinthe, Amy, Cyril, Alice, and Pierre leap off the page as distinct people with unique situations. Together, these chapters reveal how patients' comprehension of their symptoms is shaped by their cultural background, while recounting the challenges of translating that into terms the doctors can grasp.    The book shows how trained transcultural mediators can help to redress the power imbalance between doctors and the migrants they treat, providing patients with advocates who respect the authority of their background and experiences and don't just take the side of the medical professionals. The groundbreaking insights modeled in this book can be applied to any medical situation where doctors and patients find themselves speaking different languages.
