Описание: This monograph is not only the first comprehensive grammar of Papapana (a previously undocumented and under-described endangered language) but the first full reference grammar of any Oceanic language of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, despite this region displaying considerable linguistic innovation and language contact phenomena with numerous typologically significant features. This book describes Papapana on various levels, including phonology, morphology and syntax in noun phrases and the verb complex, and syntax at the clause- and sentence-level. Throughout the grammar, the described phenomena are related to the current research on typological and Oceanic linguistics. Typologically unusual features of Papapana include multiple reduplication, inverse-number marking in the noun phrase and postverbal subject-indexing. The book also describes the sociolinguistic and historical context within which Papapana is spoken and highlights linguistic changes resulting from language contact. The monograph fills an important gap in terms of grammatical descriptions of Bougainville Oceanic languages, and makes a significant contribution to the field of Oceanic linguistics, and to future comparative linguistic and typological research.

This study explores, in fascinating detail, the story of how the skill of codebreakers and fighter pilots terminated the career of Admiral Yamamoto--and the subsequent controversy over who fired the fatal shots.
He masterminded the most devastating surprise attack against the United States in its history. He was a marked man in the war that followed. A key intelligence breakthrough enabled the military to pinpoint his location. An elite team was assembled and charged not with his capture and subsequent trial but with his execution. Osama bin Laden? No--this was Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Combined Fleet during World War II. This new title analyses the origins, implementation, and outcomes of Operation Vengeance, the long-range fighter interception of Admiral Yamamoto's transport aircraft that sent him to his death on April 18, 1943. Author Si Sheppard examines every angle of the operation in detail, including the role of intelligence work in pinpointing the time and location of Yamamoto's flight, the chain of command at the highest level of the US political and military establishment who ordered the attack, and the technical limitations that had to be overcome in planning and conducting the raid. It also provides a close study of the aerial combat involved in completing the mission, offering a holistic exploration of the operation which avenged Pearl Harbor.

After divorce from the man who remains one of her best friends, her two children having grown and left home, and the loss of her only brother in a tragic workplace accident, Glenda embarks on a completely new journey. This is an inspiring account of how she got out into the world of adventure after loss and sadness. Inspired by earlier experiences with her brother in the wilds of Bougainville, Glenda shifted her mind-set and now travels off the beaten track and often out of her comfort zone. She describes some of her many amazing trips, trekking, cycling and exploring (often at altitude), visiting cultures which are remote and ancient in their customs and lifestyles.
Outside the scope of high-end travel staying in luxury hotels and resorts, the true essence of a remote experience for Glenda requires sleeping in tents, tea houses, trucks, boats, yurts, riads, caves or tribal homes, and once under the wing of her brother's aeroplane. She has had many epic experiences through safe travel on a comparative shoestring with the right support.
