Описание: The project From Central Space to Urban Place was undertaken from 2017 to 2021. It had its point of departure in a new approach to the study of early urbanisation in southern Scandinavia, in which the analyses were broadened out in time and space, compared to those of previous studies, and involved the participation of experts from a range of different disciplines. As a result, the towns were viewed relative to their hinterland in the time before, during and after their establishment. The primary outcome of the research element of the project is this anthology. It comprises a series of articles that can be read and understood independently, but which are also linked together in a series of contributions, which all address the same overall aims and objectives and contribute to the resulting synthesis. The projects many topics and results have been presented by its participants in professional fora, both at home and abroad, during the project period.

Описание:
Roman Reflections uses a series of detailed and deeply researched case studies to explore how Roman society connected with and influenced Northern Europe during the Iron and Viking Ages. In an original way, the book brings late prehistoric Denmark - best known for its so-called 'bog bodies' - into a world dominated by textual histories, principally that of Tacitus.
The studies include a new examination of the bog-bodies of the late first millennium BC, a classical archaeological puzzle: men, women and children murdered yet respected in death and adorned with items of fine clothing. A second essay challenges traditionally held ideas about the Cimbri by exploring the textual and archaeological evidence, including the startling and famous European artefact, the Gundestrup silver cauldron. The other studies comprise an archaeologically founded modernist discussion of the ethnography of Tacitus' Germania, in particular considering the character of ancient Germanic Bronze and Iron Age societies; a linguistic exploration of the Latin inheritance in northern European names and places, much of which seems to have been invented by the Romans; and an analysis of the origins of the Danes.
Throughout, traditional sources and history are presented in conjunction with new archaeological observations and interpretations. In an accessible way, Roman Reflections assesses Denmark's part on a larger stage, showing how foundations were laid for its zenith in Viking times.
Описание: The Scandinavian Early Modern World explores the early modern colonialism, globalization, and modernity in Scandinavia, along with its colonies, and its role in the shaping of the modern world. Itaims at students and scholars of anthropology, archaeology and history, alike.
The Viking Age in Scotland reviews two decades of research that have taken place since the last archaeological survey of the Vikings in Scotland, published in 1998. Advances in scientific analysis have greatly improved our understanding of Scandinavian daily life between the late eighth and fifteenth centuries, and new discoveries like the Galloway Hoard are extending our knowledge of Viking Age and Norse Scotland’s international connections. Consequently, this book brings the study of Scottish Scandinavian archaeology into the new century, updating researchers on the latest finds and theories.
In an engaging but scholarly volume that flows between chapters, expert authors guide the reader through the latest interdisciplinary research, from arrival and settlement to death and burial, via economy and exchange, power and politics, and environmental impact. Fully illustrated with photographs and maps, this is essential reading for anyone interested in Viking Scotland, and a key resource for teachers and students.
