Описание: After World War II, museum and gallery exhibitions, industrial and trade fairs, biennials, triennials, festivals and worlds fairs increasingly came to be used as locations for the exercise of soft power, for displays of cultural diplomacy between nations and as spaces for addressing areas of social and political contestation. Exhibitions Beyond Boundaries opens with a substantial introduction to the key debates, followed by case studies that advance the field of exhibition histories both geographically and methodologically, focusing on postwar transnational exchange and the wider networks engendered through exhibitions. Chapters trace relations across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the Pacific, and the United States of America, drawing on a range of approaches and perspectives, principally from art and design history but also from social, economic and political history, and museum studies. Featured case studies include the presentation of African-American Art at FESMAN 66 and FESTAC 77, the US’s 1961 Small Industries Exhibition in Colombo, Israels early appearances at the Venice Biennale, the Vatican Pavilion at the 1964-1965 New York Worlds Fair, and Hong Kongs Pavilion at Expo 70 in Tokyo.

Описание: Television before TV rethinks the history of interwar television by exploring the medium’s numerous demonstrations organized at national fairs and international exhibitions in the late 1920s and 1930s. Building upon extensive archival research in Britain, Germany, and the United States, Anne-Katrin Weber analyses the sites where the new medium met its first audiences. She argues that public displays offered spaces where television's symbolic, cultural, political, and social definitions were negotiated and eventually stabilized; for the historian, the exhibitions therefore constitute crucial events to understand not only the medium's pre-war emergence, but also its subsequent domestication in the post-war years. Designed as a transnational study, her book highlights the multiple circulations of artefacts and ideas across borders of democratic and totalitarian regimes alike. Richly illustrated with 100 photographs, Television before TV finally emphasizes that even without regular programmes, interwar television was widely seen.

Описание: Where do we begin to talk about abstract art? This question depends on one's worldview. From the point of view of the collection included in this book, the arc of abstraction is very broad, sweeping and multivalent. The essays included here take an open view of the story of abstraction, reflecting the variation and diversity of American art included in the holdings of the Newark Museum. The museum gave avant-garde abstraction an early American home, exhibiting the works of painter Max Weber in 1913. Yet abstraction's American roots extend earlier as seen in indigenous objects as well. Donald Kuspit discusses America's earliest abstract painter Arthur Dove and the innovations of Georgia O'Keefe, Joseph Stella, Morgan Russell, and Alexander Calder who all ""convey abstraction's ambivalent consciousness of nature and its unconscious attempt to recover the self."" The Arc of Abstraction is lavishly illustrated with over 80 full-color images of works by a broad array of abstract artists including Ad Reinhardt, Phillip K. Smith, III, Philip Guston, Isamu Noguchi, Romare Howard Bearden, Stuart Davis, Louise Nevelson, Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, Melvin Edwards, and Joaquín Torres-García. Expert commentary by Ulysses Grant Dietz, Tricia Laughlin Bloom, Gabriel Dawe, Jalena Louise Jampolsky, Marela Zacarias, Tarin Fuller, William L. Coleman, Souleo, Tricia Laughlin Bloom, and Kay WalkingStick provides important insights to help readers understand the nature and significance of the artwork. Published by Newark Museum. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

Описание: In and Out of View models an expansion in how censorship is discursively framed. Contributors from diverse backgrounds, including artists, art historians, museum specialists, and students, address controversial instances of art production and reception from the mid-20th century to the present in the Americas, Africa,Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Their essays, interviews, and statements invite consideration of the shifting contexts, values, and needs through which artwork moves in and out of view. At issue are governmental restrictions and discursive effects, including erasure and distortion resulting from institutional policies, canonical processes, and interpretive methods. Crucial considerations concerning death/violence, authoritarianism, (neo)colonialism, global capitalism, immigration, race, religion, sexuality, activism/social justice, disability, campus speech, and cultural destruction are highlighted. The anthology—a thought-provoking resource for students and scholars in art history, museum and cultural studies, and creative practices—represents a timely and significant contribution to the literature on censorship.

Описание:

Exchanges between different cultures and institutions of learning have taken place for centuries, but it was only in the twentieth century that such efforts evolved into formal programs that received focused attention from nation-states, empires and international organizations. Global Exchanges provides a wide-ranging overview of this underresearched topic, examining the scope, scale and evolution of organized exchanges around the globe through the twentieth century. In doing so it dramatically reveals the true extent of organized exchange and its essential contribution for knowledge transfer, cultural interchange, and the formation of global networks so often taken for granted today.
