Описание: This volume provides a self-contained introduction to applications of loop representations, and the related topic of knot theory, in particle physics and quantum gravity. These topics are of considerable interest because they provide a unified arena for the study of the gauge invariant quantization of Yang-Mills theories and gravity, and suggest a promising approach to the eventual unification of the four fundamental forces. The book begins with a detailed review of loop representation theory and then describes loop representations in Maxwell theory, Yang-Mills theories as well as lattice techniques. Applications in quantum gravity are then discussed, with the following chapters considering knot theories, braid theories and extended loop representations in quantum gravity. A final chapter assesses the current status of the theory and points out possible directions for future research. First published in 1996, this title has been reissued as an Open Access publication on Cambridge Core.

Описание: A study of topology and geometry, beginning with a comprehensible account of the extraordinary and rather mysterious impact of mathematical physics, and especially gauge theory, on the study of the geometry and topology of manifolds. The focus of the book is the Yang-Mills-Higgs field and some considerable effort is expended to make clear its origin and significance in physics. Much of the mathematics developed here to study these fields is standard, but the treatment always keeps one eye on the physics and sacrifices generality in favor of clarity.
The author brings readers up the level of physics and mathematics needed to conclude with a brief discussion of the Seiberg-Witten invariants. A large number of exercises are included to encourage active participation on the part of the reader.
Описание: A control system is a complex electronics architecture involving setpoints and targets. One simple example is the cruise control system of an automobile. Rather than delving into extensive theory, this book focuses on what power electronics engineers really need to know for compensating or stabilizing a given system.

Описание: These lectures concern the properties of topological charge in gauge theories and the physical effects which have been attributed to its existence. No introduction to this subject would be adequate without a discussion of the original work of Belavin, Polyakov, Schwarz, and Tyupkin 1], of the beautiful calculation by 't Hooft 2,3], and of the occurrence of 8-vacua 4-6]. Other important topics include recent progress on solutions of the Yang-Mills equation of motion 7,8], and the problem of parity and time-reversal invariance in strong interactions 9] (axions 10,11], etc. ). In a few places, I have strayed from the conventional line and in one important case, disagreed with it. The im- portant remark concerns the connection between chirality and topological charge first pointed out by 't Hooft 2]: in the literature, the rule is repeatedly quoted with the wrong sign If QS is the generator for Abelian chiral transformations of massless quarks with N flavours, the correct form of the rule is Qs = - 2N {topological charge} (1. 1) where QS means the out eigenvalue of QS minus the in eigenvalue. The sign can be checked by consulting the standard WKB calculation 2,3], rotating to Minkowski space, and observing that the sum of right-handed chiralities of operators in a Green's function equals - QS. The wrong sign is an automatie consequence of a standard but incorrect derivation in which the axial charge is misidentified.
