Transforming Food Systems Under Climate Change through Innovation, Ana Maria Loboguerrero, Andreea Nowak, Bruce Campbell, Dhanush Dinesh, Philip Thornton
Описание: In the continuing debate of how to confront the challenges of climate change, individuals, advocacy groups, and political parties in the United States offer arguments and solutions based on economic and political viewpoints. But what if we are beginning from a distorted view? In this book, F. Stephan Mayer argues that our psychological representation of the world is at the heart of the underlying causes of climate change. Mayer posits that we need to change the way we see the world if we are to effectively take a new course of action to address this threat. Through an alternative worldview based on Aldo Leopold's concept of land ethic, Mayer furthers the conversation by promoting a clearer vision of our relationship to nature and how it leads to a different path directed toward environmental sustainability. Based on over 20 years of psychological research examining the impact of the land ethic on pro-environmental behavior and personal well being, Mayer's accessible tone invites readers to place their worldview within a broader framework, draw connections to their lives, and spark ideas of next steps that individuals and groups can take to transition to this alternative worldview and rectify this situation.

Описание: This book presents an integrated, multi-disciplinary analysis that combines climate science, economics, technology and political analysis of US climate policy changes undertaken during 2021. The book begins with an up-to-date discussion of the climate crisis as of 2021, with key concepts, problems and data all represented in straight-forward graphs and tables. This introduction to climate science and climate conditions establishes the context in which US climate policy is being made. The second chapter presents information about issues and policies at the advent of the Biden administration in January 2021 within the institutional context of the US political system. The chapter focuses on the initiatives taken by the new administration in a remarkable display of wide-ranging decision-making during its first year in office, and it also includes the policies of state and local governments. The third chapter offers a detailed analysis of the climate budget developed for the fiscal year 2022, a budget that marks dramatic increases in the amounts of funds for a wide variety of climate change programs—and also reductions in the subsidies for fossil fuel industries. A series of sectoral chapters examine the economics and technologies, as well as the government policies, in key industry sectors: energy, transportation, agriculture and finance. The final chapter is based on scenarios of future climate changes and policy paths that can address the mitigation and adaptation challenges of the next decade. The book offers specific information, so the reader can understand the contemporary climate issues and policies in the USA. At the same time, it provides the enduring concepts and fundamental features of the science, economics, technologies and political institutions that will shape the future.

Описание:
Originally delivered as the Stegner Lecture at the 2020 annual symposium of the Wallace Stegner Center for Land, Resources and the Environment, Jessica Fanzo here explores how, in the context of the broad global trends of population growth, climate crisis, and inequitable food availability, food systems need to be re-oriented to ensure they can produce enough food to nourish the world. This re-orientation includes moving toward on-farm sustainable food production practices, decreasing food loss and waste, addressing poverty by creating jobs and decent livelihoods, and providing safe, affordable, and healthy diets for everyone. At the same time, food systems must decrease the pressure on biodiversity loss, conserve land and water resources, minimize air and water pollution, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. This is a lot to ask of an entrenched system.
Food policy is central to changing systems, and bold policies must be applied to accelerate and incentivize economic, societal, and technological transformations towards a more socially just and sustainable global food system. But policy decisions come with synergies, trade-offs, and sometimes unexpected consequences. In a world of uncertainty, we must seek global solutions to human and planetary health.

Описание: At the centre of Decolonising Intercultural Education is a simple yet fundamental question: is it possible to learn from the Other? This book argues that many recent efforts to theorise interculturality restrict themselves to a variety of interpretations within a Western framework of knowledge, which does not necessarily account for the epistemological diversity of the world.

Описание:
Experiments in geoengineering - intentionally manipulating the Earth's climate to reduce global warming - have become the focus of a vital debate about responsible science and innovation. Drawing on three years of sociological research working with scientists on one of the world's first major geoengineering projects, this book examines the politics of experimentation. Geoengineering provides a test case for rethinking the responsibilities of scientists and asking how science can take better care of the futures that it helps bring about.
This book gives students, researchers and the general reader interested in the place of science in contemporary society a compelling framework for future thinking and discussion.

Описание: This open access book examines the interactions between India’s economic development, agricultural production, and nutrition through the lens of a “Food Systems Approach (FSA).” The Indian growth story is a paradoxical one. Despite economic progress over the past two decades, regional inequality, food insecurity and malnutrition problems persist. Simultaneously, recent trends in obesity along with micro-nutrient deficiency portend to a future public health crisis. This book explores various challenges and opportunities to achieve a nutrition-secure future through diversified production systems, improved health and hygiene environment and greater individual capability to access a balanced diet contributing to an increase in overall productivity. The authors bring together the latest data and scientific evidence from the country to map out the current state of food systems and nutrition outcomes. They place India within the context of other developing country experiences and highlight India’s status as an outlier in terms of the persistence of high levels of stunting while following global trends in obesity. This book discusses the policy and institutional interventions needed for promoting a nutrition-sensitive food system and the multi-sectoral strategies needed for simultaneously addressing the triple burden of malnutrition in India.
