Описание: The Sutil and Mexicana sailed along the coast of the Pacific Northwest in 1792, their stated mission to put to rest the persistent rumors of the mythical strait connecting the Pacific and Atlantic in the neighborhood of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the present-day border of Canada and the United States. This would be the last Spanish exploration along the Pacific Coast after 250 years of primacy in charting those waters.Commanded by Dionisio Alcalea Galiano and Cayento Vald?s y Flores, and inaugurated by Alejandro Malaspina, the voyage is the origin of our knowledge of part of the coast of British Columbia and its inhabitants. The two ships stopped and spent time at Nootka prior to exploring in detail the coastline inside the Strait of Juan de Fuca and north of Vancouver, Canada.Called the definitive account of the voyage by Donald Cutter, noted expert on the Spanish explorations. Through painstaking research, the translator and editor identified the original manuscript account of the voyage, most likely prepared Galiano. It varies significantly from the account published in Spain in 1802, and translated into English by Cecil Jane in 1930. The variances are carefully noted and accounted for by the editor.Considerable ethnological data are included in the document. The ships had frequent contacts with the indigenous people along the coast, noting variations in their language, their trading techniques, their fear, friendliness or hostility towards the vessels and crew.George Vancouver was conducting his explorations at the same time as the Sutil and Mexicana, and the two parties joined for several days to make cooperative surveys and share information. Vancouver and his second in command, Puget, entertained the Spaniards on his ship Discovery several evenings, and their relations were extremely cordial. The Drawings of Jos? Cardero, an artist assigned to the expedition, depicting the natives and landscapes were a major contribution to the voyage account. Thirteen of his drawings are included in the book, in addition to portraits of the two captains and maps of the voyage. An extensive introduction is provided giving an historical background to the voyage, the history of the original published account, and a careful analysis of the document now published. Short biographies of the major participants are also provided.A glossary of place names identifying present-day terms for the Spanish locations named in the document is added for reference. Two appendices containing letters regarding preparation of the voyage account and the ship manifests also supplement the text.

Описание: In 1792, Spanish naval officer and explorer Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra sailed from San Blas, Mexico, to Nootka Sound, on the west coast of present-day Vancouver Island. For nearly three years, he had been immersed in the aftermath of the Nootka Crisis of 1789, a dispute between Britain and Spain over sovereignty in the North Pacific. He was journeying north as his government’s commissioner to hand over Spanish-occupied territory at Nootka. This book offers the first published English translation of Bodega’s journal, a remarkable account of his travels along the Northwest Coast of America, encounters with Native peoples—most notably, Chief Maquinna—and the friendship that developed between Bodega and his British counterpart, George Vancouver.

Until now, Bodega’s journal has been available only in Spanish publications or in manuscript form. This much-needed English-language edition results from the collaboration of three preeminent scholars of the Pacific Northwest, who provide an in-depth introduction and extensive footnotes that make the translation accessible to a contemporary audience.

Also included in this edition is a generous selection of Bodega’s original charts and illustrations created by the artists who worked with JosÉ Mariano MoziÑo and JosÉ Maldonado, two scientists who—at Bodega’s insistence—accompanied him on his expedition to Nootka.

Описание: On the second of his two voyages to patrol British fisheries in North America, Edward Chappell (1792-1861) recorded his observations in this illustrated journal, published in 1817. Though somewhat superficial, his descriptions of Inuit life, homes and customs revised previous accounts and provided new information to English readers.

Описание: Orientaciones trasnpacificas is a wide-ranging study that presents a cross-temporal examination of the discernible orientation toward East and South Asia that pervades the work of well-known intellectual and artistic Mexican figures. It goes from the later years of the regime of Porfirio Diaz in the 1900s to the cultural imaginaries of nationalism in the 1920s, and from the Cold War to the global spread of neoliberalism at the turn of the new century. Understanding Orientalism as a form of situated and historical orientation grounded in Mexico's own (post)colonial formation, the book argues that, although after its independence Mexico's important commercial connection with the Asian continent became attenuated, East and South Asia continued to be a crucial point of reference for Mexico to assert global centrality and to anchor discourses of cultural singularity or political exception.

By tracing the intellectual turn to Asia in Jose Juan Tablada's travel narratives and art essays, Manuel Alvarez Bravo's photography landscapes, Jose Vasconcelos's writing about mestizaje and in his literacy campaigns, Roger Bartra's Marxist political economy writings, Rafael Bernal's hard boiled novel, Marcela Rodriguez and Mario Bellatin's musical composition in Ciudad Juarez, and Shinpei Takeda's art installations in Tijuana, the book recasts the colonial emphasis on a transatlantic relationship with Europe and displays a transpacific and planetary imagination-eschewing the Atlantic dialectic between ex colony and metropole-that defined Mexican conceptualizations of literary and cultural modernity. Thus, Orientaciones trasnpacificas shows that Mexican orientalism played an instrumental (though often unremarked) role in the cultural definitions that became fundamental to the field of Mexican and Latin American Studies, such as the notion of hybrid modernity (in racial, aesthetic, economic, or temporal terms).
