It is just one recent incident that the medical community blames on the nation’s falling vaccination rates. Still, many parents continue to claim that the risks that vaccines pose to their children are far greater than their benefits. Given the research and the unanimity of opinion within the medical community, many ask how such parents—who are most likely to be white, college educated, and with a family income over $75,000—could hold such beliefs. For over a decade, Jennifer Reich has been studying the phenomenon of vaccine refusal from the perspectives of parents who distrust vaccines and the corporations that make them, as well as the health care providers and policy makers who see them as essential to ensuring community health. Reich reveals how parents who opt out of vaccinations see their decision: what they fear, what they hope to control, and what they believe is in their child’s best interest. Based on interviews with parents who fully reject vaccines as well as those who believe in “slow vax,” or altering the number of and time between vaccinations, the author provides a fascinating account of these parents’ points of view. Placing these stories in dialogue with those of pediatricians who see the devastation that can be caused by vaccine-preventable diseases and the policy makers who aim to create healthy communities, Calling the Shots offers a unique opportunity to understand the points of disagreement on what is best for children, communities, and public health, and the ways in which we can bridge these differences.
Описание: What is a "Badass"? A "Badass" is someone who says things like this: "I'm going to give you the system that is literally step-by-step and is proven to create sexual intrigue that is so compelling and so powerful that almost any girl you use it on will find their panties around their knees soaked to the max before she can even say, 'My name is....'" The above excerpt is taken from the promotional video for one of the most popular so-called "dating guides" for men, called The Tao of Badass. Notice the language - the product that is being promoted is a "system" that men can "use on" a woman or girl - to not only create instant "sexual intrigue", but an immediate sexual response. "Almost any girl you use it on", we are told, "will find their panties around their knees soaked to the max". Soaked to the max And she hasn't even had the chance to say, "My name is...." Yeah, that's Badass stuff. It's also date-rape stuff. Isn't the so-called "date-rape" drug designed to render a woman unconscious so that she is unable to defend herself against unwanted sexual contact. A very similar theme is at work in much of the contemporary "dating" and "seduction guide" literature. What is being promoted are not dating tips or dating advice but something far more sinister and dangerous - fantasies of controlling women and forcing them to act against their will. "Badass B***S***: Helping Young Men Identify and Reject Toxic Ideas About Dating, Relationships, Women and Sex" by Alan Stransman is a critical examination of the ideas and attitudes expressed in the promotional video for the Tao of Badass product - ideas and attitudes which the author finds to be toxic, infantile, demeaning and reprehensible. Alan Stransman is the author of several books including two memoirs, one of which, entitled, "So, Why Have You Never Been Married?: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Lunacy" was described by Stransman as a "love letter to the women in my life that I have loved, lost and never forgotten." A former teacher of English Literature at both the high school and university levels and a former television writer, producer and director, Stransman argues in "Badass B***S***" that the entire culture of "seducing women" is based upon a fantasy of controlling and raping women. "Women already get it", says Stransman. "It is men - and especially young men, who need to be sensitized to the kinds of demeaning and insulting ideas and attitudes towards women and sex that are rampant in our culture. My book won't change the world, but it may be a small step in the right direction."
Описание: An inside look into why Millennials are rejecting careers in politics, and what this means for the future of America's political system Millennials are often publically criticized for being apathetic about the American political process and their lack of interest in political careers. But what do millennials themselves have to say about the prospect of holding political office? Are they as uninterested in political issues and the future of the American political system as the media suggests? Out of the Running goes directly to the source and draws from extensive research, including over 50 interviews, with graduate students in elite institutions that have historically been a direct link for their graduates into state or federal elected office: Harvard Law, Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, and Boston's Suffolk University Law School. Shauna Shames, herself a young graduate of Harvard University, suggests that millennials are not uninterested; rather, they don't believe that a career in politics is the best way to create change. Millennials view the system as corrupt or inefficient and are particularly skeptical about the fundraising, frenzied media attention, and loss of privacy that have become staples of the American electoral process. They are clear about their desire to make a difference in the world but feel that the "broken" political system is not the best way to do so--a belief held particularly by millennial women and women of color.
The implications of Shames' argument are crucial for the future of the American political system--how can a system adapt and grow if qualified, intelligent leaders are not involved? An engaging and accessible resource for anyone who follows American politics, Out of the Running highlights the urgent need to fix the American political system, as an absence of diverse millennial candidates leaves its future in a truly precarious position.
"The gaps in this Huntsville, AL, limestone were likely caused by some event somewhere on earth such as a meteoroid impact or a volcanic eruption that killed sea organisms and land animals for a few thousands of years. The mountains and the hills will burst into song before you. Isaiah 55:12 NIV".
Learning something about nature is learning something about God.
