Описание:
Ubiquitous illegal lotteries known as policy flourished in Chicago’s Black community during the overlapping waves of the Great Migration. Policy “queens” owned stakes in lucrative operations while women writers and clerks canvased the neighborhood, passed out winnings, and kept the books.

Elizabeth Schroeder Schlabach examines the complexities of Black women’s work in policy gambling. Policy provided Black women with a livelihood for themselves and their families. At the same time, navigating gender expectations, aggressive policing, and other hazards of the infromal economy led them to refashion ideas about Black womanhood and respectability. Policy earnings also funded above-board enterprises ranging from neighborhood businesses to philanthropic institutions, and Schlabach delves into the various ways Black women straddled the illegal policy business and reputable community involvement.

Vivid and revealing, Dream Books and Gamblers tells the stories of Black women in the underground economy and how they used their work to balance the demands of living and laboring in Black Chicago.

Описание: From a former criminal and now chaplain for the San Francisco 49ers and the Golden State Warriors, comes a riveting, behind-the-bars look at one of America s most feared prisons: San Quentin. Reverend Earl Smith shares the most important lessons he s learned from years of helping inmates discover God s plan for them.
In 1983, twenty-seven-year-old Earl Smith arrived at San Quentin just like everyone thought he would. Labeled as a gang member and criminal from a young age, Smith was expected to do some time, but after a brush with death during a botched drug deal, Smith s soul was saved and his life path was altered forever.
From that moment on, Smith knew God had an unusual mission for him, and he became the minister to the lost souls sitting on death row. For twenty-three years, Smith played chess with Charles Manson, witnessed twelve executions, and negotiated truces between rival gangs. But most importantly, Smith helped the prisoners of San Quentin find redemption, hope, and understand that it is still possible to find God s grace and mercy from behind bars.
Edgy, insightful, and thought provoking, "Death Row Chaplain "teaches us that God s grace can reach anyone even the most desperate and lost and that it s never too late to turn our lives around."

Описание:

Recent decades have seen a steady trend in Roman Catholic teaching toward a commitment to active nonviolence that could qualify the church as a "peace church." As a moral theologian specializing in social ethics, Schlabach explores how this trend in Catholic social teaching will need to take shape if Catholics are to follow through. Globalization, he argues, is an invitation to recognize what was always supposed to be true in Catholic ecclesiology: Christ gives Christians an identity that crosses borders. To become a truly catholic global peace church in which peacemaking is church-wide and parish-deep, Catholics should recognize that they have always properly been a diaspora people with an identity that transcends tribe and nation-state.

Описание: Orphaned and alone, Jonathan joins his uncle, Jared Reed in German-occupied Austria during World War II. As a war correspondent, Jared has many contacts, including some that prove to be dangerous. When Jared is severely beaten during questioning by the Nazis, Jonathan becomes the only person available to take on an assignment from the Austrian Underground. Can the young American boy, unfamiliar with the language, and also the terrain of the mountains, manage to distract the soldiers who man the outposts long enough to smuggle refugees past and allow them to make contact with the freedom fighters living in the high regions of the Alps? Can he do his part in the fight for freedom from the Nazi reign of terror without sacrificing his uncles' life?
