Описание: This famous work is a textbook that emphasises the conceptual and historical continuity of analytic function theory. The second volume broadens from a textbook to a textbook-treatise, covering the "canonical" topics, and other topics nearer the expanding frontier of analytic function theory. In the latter category are the chapters on majorisation and on functions holomorphic in a half-plane.

Описание:
Charles Ives Reconsidered reexamines a number of critical assumptions about the life and works of this significant American composer, drawing on many new sources to explore Ives's creative activities within broader historical, social, cultural, and musical perspectives. Gayle Sherwood Magee offers the first large-scale rethinking of Ives's musical development based on the controversial revised chronology of his music. Using as a guide Ives's own dictum that "the fabric of existence weaves itself whole," Charles Ives Reconsidered offers several new paths to understanding all of Ives's music as the integrated and cohesive work of a controversial composer who was very much a product of his time and place. Magee portrays Ives's life, career and posthumous legacy against the backdrop of his musical and social environments from the Gilded Age to the present. The book includes contemporary portraits of the composer, his peers, and his teachers, as seen through archival materials, published reviews, and both historical and modern critical assessments.

Описание: Interweaving photographs, concert programs, scores, and drawings with the texts of more than fifty interviews with family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues, Charles Ives Remembered is a vivid memory portrait of the enigmatic American composer, told in the voices of the people who knew him best.
Charles Ives (1874-1954) was publicly an insurance executive but privately a composer whose eccentric works and paradoxical life would intrigue, perplex, and inspire generations to come after him. Moving from Ives's childhood and years at Yale to his business and musical careers, the memories and reflections assembled in this Kinkeldey Award-winning volume provide a multifaceted and humanizing view of an American musical icon.
Описание: American composer Charles Ives (1874–1954) has gone from being a virtual unknown to become one of the most respected and lauded composers in American music. In this sweeping survey of intellectual and musical history, David C. Paul tells the new story of how Ives's music was shaped by shifting conceptions of American identity within and outside of musical culture, charting the changes in the reception of Ives across the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century. Paul focuses on the critics, composers, performers, and scholars whose contributions were most influential in shaping the critical discourse on Ives, many of them marquee names of American musical culture themselves, including Henry Cowell, Aaron Copland, Elliott Carter, and Leonard Bernstein.
Paul explores both how Ives positioned his music amid changing philosophical and aesthetic currents and how others interpreted his contributions to American music. Although Ives's initial efforts to find a public in the early twenties attracted a few devotees, the resurgence of interest in the American literary past during the thirties made a concert staple of his "Concord" Sonata, a work dedicated to nineteenth-century transcendentalist writers. Paul shows how Ives was subsequently deployed as an icon of American freedom during the early Cold War period and how he came to be instigated at the head of a line of "American maverick" composers. Paul also examines why a recent cadre of scholars has beset the composer with Gilded Age social anxieties.
By embedding Ives' reception within the changing developments of a wide range of fields including intellectual history, American studies, literature, musicology, and American politics and society in general, Charles Ives in the Mirror: American Histories of an Iconic Composer greatly advances our understanding of Ives and his influence on nearly a century of American culture.
Описание: Charles Ives (1874–1954) moved traditional compositional practice in new directions by incorporating modern and innovative techniques with nostalgic borrowings of 19th century American popular music and Protestant hymns. Matthew McDonald argues that the influence of Emerson and Thoreau on Ives's compositional style freed the composer from ordinary ideas of time and chronology, allowing him to recuperate the past as he reached for the musical unknown. McDonald links this concept of the multi-temporal in Ives's works to Transcendentalist understandings of eternity. His approach to Ives opens new avenues for inquiry into the composer's eclectic and complex style.
Описание: Much interest has been shown in Charles Ives since his death on May 19, 1954. Few composers in the history of music have offered the innumerable problems of analysis and performance that are seen in the works of Ives. Although the importance of this major American composer is now widely recognized, the frustrating complexity of his music has succeeded in discouraging large-scale studies of Ives's compositional characteristics on a musicological level. Ives's transcendental beliefs directly influenced his concepts of freedom in creative expression. For this reason, this book will focus on Ives's indebtedness to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau, Horatio Parker ad George Ives. This book begins with an investigation of the New England Transcendental tradition. The Transcendentalists were critical, restless, sensitive and highly sophisticated. They were Utopians who seriously reacted to radical social changes, and advocated progressive opinions. Music was very important to them as an expression of their beliefs, and their musical philosophy greatly influenced the development of Ives's musical thought. The Transcendentalists regarded music as a unique form of communication, a universal truth, capable of penetrating all the barriers of time and space. Furthermore, they viewed music as a means of communicating with one's own thoughts. Ives's philosophical beliefs about musical composition will be discussed with reference to Ives's own writings on aesthetics and music, as well as selected works by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and others. In addition, Ives's aesthetic concepts are reflected in the structural organization of the above-mentioned piano compositions.
Описание: This book addresses the relevance of Timaeus`s cosmology to Socrates` request for a speech about war. Charles Ives finds relevance in the dialogue`s concern for education apropos of the medical dimensions of Timaeus` physics, the project of becoming like god, and the philosophical soul responsible for success on the battlefield.

In "Charles Ives and his Road to the Stars," Antony Cooke brings a fresh new approach to the music of America's iconic composer in this accessible account of what lay behind the music of this modern titan. It has been over a quarter of a century since the period of destructive revisionism impacted his ascending star, leading to the much-touted "reassessment" of his contributions. With a comprehensive approach and detailed examination of a broad cross section of the music itself, the real Ives is revealed, the many myths, misconceptions, faulty impressions, and incorrect conclusions at long last stripped away. With clear indications that Ives encoded into his music a spiritual link to the cosmos, the special destination and purpose leading to his legendary and almost tragically mythic Universe Symphony finally become clear, this focal work receiving an in-depth examination. If all too often the composer has been kept from the broader public by an elitism that Ives would have abhorred, or by many tangled biographic analyses that reveal more about the writers than they do about Ives. Cooke steers the reader toward a clear understanding of this iconic figure-an American treasure, one whose music and life brings vividly to mind the almost forgotten time of the golden age of America's emergence as a dominant presence with a cultural identity finally separated from the Old World across the Atlantic. Linked to a broad cross section of his music, the reader is guided through Ives's unique musical language, and what lay behind it. Exposing the many myths, untruths, misconceptions, faulty impressions, and incorrect conclusions along the way, Ives is treated with a respect earned, but often denied.
