The irresistible enthusiasm of Great Adaptations couldn't come at a better time.--David P. Barash, Wall Street Journal
Be very amazed.--Carl Safina, author of Beyond Words and Becoming Wild How one scientist unlocked the secrets behind some of nature's most astounding animals From star-nosed moles that have super-sensing snouts to electric eels that paralyze their prey, animals possess unique and extraordinary abilities. In Great Adaptations, Kenneth Catania presents an entertaining and engaging look at some of nature's most remarkable creatures. Telling the story of his biological detective work, Catania sheds light on the mysteries behind the behaviors of tentacled snakes, tiny shrews, zombie-making wasps, and more. He shows not only how studying these animals can provide deep insights into how life evolved, but also how scientific discovery can be filled with adventure and fun. Beginning with the star-nosed mole, Catania reveals what the creature's nasal star is actually for, and what this tells us about how brains work. He explores how the deceptive hunting strategy of tentacled snakes leads prey straight to their mouths, how eels use electricity to control other animals, and why emerald jewel wasps make zombies out of cockroaches. He also solves the enigma of worm grunting--a traditional technique in which earthworms are enticed out of the ground--by teaming up with professional worm grunters. Catania demonstrates the merits of approaching science with an open mind, considers the role played by citizen scientists, and illustrates that most animals have incredible, hidden abilities that defy our imagination. Examining some strange and spectacular creatures, Great Adaptations offers a wondrous journey into nature's grand designs.

Описание: This ambitious collection follows the evolution of capitalism from its origins in 13th-century European towns to its 16th-century expansion into Asia, Africa and South America and on to the global capitalism of modern day.
Written by distinguished historians and social scientists, the chapters examine capitalism and its critics and the level of variation and convergence in its operation across locations. The authors illuminate the aspects of capitalism that have encouraged, but also limited, social responsibility and environmental sustainability.
Covering times, places and topics that have often been overlooked in the existing literature, this important contribution to the field of economic history charts the most comprehensive chronology of capitalism to date.

Описание:
Introduction to Key Concepts and Evolutions in Psychoanalysis offers an accessible starting point to understanding psychoanalysis by focusing on seven key psychoanalytic models and their creators and how the field has evolved over time from Sigmund Freud's original ideas. The book is based on the premise that Freud started a conversation over 100 years ago that continues to this day: who are we, why do we suffer so, and how can others help?
Alexis A. Johnson seeks to make the invariably complex and sometimes contradictory terms and concepts of psychoanalysis more accessible for those being introduced to psychoanalysis for the first time, integrating them into a cohesive narrative, whilst using a broadly developmental perspective. Each model is given space and context, matched with relevant case studies drawn from the author's own clinical practice.
Written in an approachable, jargon-free style, this book brings to life the creators of the models using case studies to illustrate the 'healing maps' and models they have developed. The author methodically adds layer upon layer of increasingly challenging insights: Which model is useful or appropriate, and when and how exactly is it useful as part of the healing paradigm? Rather than aligning with any one model, Johnson makes the case that drawing upon aspects of all of these sometimes-competing ideas at various times is important and healthy.
Introduction to Key Concepts and Evolutions in Psychoanalysis will appeal to undergraduate students of psychology encountering psychoanalysis for the first time, as well as trainees in psychoanalysis and those working across other branches of the mental health profession wishing to understand and drawn upon fundamental psychoanalytic ideas.

Описание: There are many problems in nonlinear partial differential equations with delay which arise from, for example, physical models, biochemical models, and social models. Some of them can be formulated as nonlinear functional evolutions in infinite-dimensional abstract spaces. Since Webb (1976) considered autonomous nonlinear functional evo- lutions in infinite-dimensional real Hilbert spaces, many nonlinear an- alysts have studied for the last nearly three decades autonomous non- linear functional evolutions, non-autonomous nonlinear functional evo- lutions and quasi-nonlinear functional evolutions in infinite-dimensional real Banach spaces. The techniques developed for nonlinear evolutions in infinite-dimensional real Banach spaces are applied. This book gives a detailed account of the recent state of theory of nonlinear functional evolutions associated with accretive operators in infinite-dimensional real Banach spaces. Existence, uniqueness, and stability for 'solutions' of nonlinear func- tional evolutions are considered. Solutions are presented by nonlinear semigroups, or evolution operators, or methods of lines, or inequalities by Benilan. This book is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 contains some basic concepts and results in the theory of nonlinear operators and nonlinear evolutions in real Banach spaces, that play very important roles in the following three chapters. Chapter 2 deals with autonomous nonlinear functional evolutions in infinite-dimensional real Banach spaces. Chapter 3 is devoted to non-autonomous nonlinear functional evolu- tions in infinite-dimensional real Banach spaces. Finally, in Chapter 4 quasi-nonlinear functional evolutions are con- sidered in infinite-dimensional real Banach spaces.
