Описание: This study argues for the recovery of trust as a central theme in Christian theology, and offers the first theology of trust in the New Testament, displaying trust between God, Christ, and humanity as a risky, dynamic, forward-looking, life-changing partnership.
Adespota Papyracea Hexametra Graeca provides a comprehensive corpus of ‘anonymous’ hexameter texts on papyri, parchments, ostraca and tablets appeared in the current and past two centuries. The project has three main objectives: i) to retrieve and determine how many and what type of unidentified hexameter poems reached us via Egyptian papyri; ii) to restore a readable and reliable text for these poems, providing straightforward access to material that has been hard-to-reach in print format, is still unavailable online, or has not been previously translated into English or any other modern language; iii) to discuss, insofar as the fragmentary state of the evidence allows, issues of style, metre, and attribution. Overall, it aspires to serve as a fresh and solid starting-point for future assessment of Greek poetry in Egypt from the Archaic period to Late Antiquity.
This first volume of papyrus adespota contains: i) a catalogue of hexameter adespota, and ii) critical editions with English translation and commentary of: cosmologies and foundation poems (no. 01–06), astronomical and astrological texts (07–12), didactic and technical poetry (13–16), hymns (17–32), fragments of erotic content (33–38); epithalamia (39–43); and two hexameter anthologies, the Goodspeed papyrus (44) and the so-called Pamprepius codex (45). Future volumes will contain: Encomia and Lamentations (46–67); Bucolic (68–71), and Epic poetry (72–144); assemblages of Homeric verses (145–154); magical verses (155–166); oracles (167–169); fragments of uncertain genre or content (170–204); hexameter quotes from grammatical papyri and ancient commentaries (205–216); ??????? (217–219); gnomic hexameters (220–221); pangrams (222–235); texts copied or produced within a school context (236–242).

Описание: This volume contains editions of texts, theological, literary, subliterary, and documentary. The theological section includes large fragments of the First Apocalypse of James (5533), an early Christian narrative of conversations between Jesus and his brother, James. The Greek text is otherwise lost and scholars have depended on two often conflicting Coptic versions. The first of seven magical papyri is a second-century exorcism manual (5542), and a series of potted lives of the Successors of Alexander the Great illuminates the history of ancient life-writing before Plutarch (5535). A fragment of commentary on Aristophanes (5536) and five grammatical texts (5537-41) complete Section II. Section III provides a mass of new evidence concerning slavery in the Roman world. The photographs show all the new theological, literary, and subliterary texts, and eleven of the documents.

Описание: The divisions in the Corinthian church are catalogued by Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:12: "Each of you says, 'I follow Paul, ' or 'I follow Apollos, ' or 'I follow Cephas, ' or 'I follow Christ.']? White shows how these splits are found in the milieu of 1st-century Graeco-Roman education. By consulting relevant literary and epigraphic evidence, White develops a picture of ancient education throughout the Empire generally, and in Roman Corinth specifically. This serves as a backdrop to the situation in the Christian community, wherein some of the elite, educated members preferred Apollos to Paul as a teacher since Apollos more closely resembled other teachers of higher studies.
White takes a new and different direction to other studies in the field, arguing that it is against the values inculcated through "higher education+? in general that the teachers are being compared. By starting with this broader category, one that much better reflects the very eclectic nature of Graeco-Roman education, a sustained reading of 1 Corinthians 1-4 is made possible.

Описание: This book provides a series of case studies which demonstrate the usefulness of taking a demographic approach to the social, political and economic history of the Graeco-Roman world. The book will appeal not only to ancient historians but also to demographers and social scientists interested in ancient population studies.
Описание: Letter writing was widespread in the Graeco-Roman world, as indicated by the large number of surviving letters and their extensive coverage of all social categories. Despite a large amount of work that has been done on the topic of ancient epistolography, material and formatting conventions have remained underexplored, mainly due to the difficulty of accessing images of letters in the past. Thanks to the increasing availability of digital images and the appearance of more detailed and sophisticated editions, we are now in a position to study such aspects. This book examines the development of letter writing conventions from the archaic to Roman times, and is based on a wide corpus of letters that survive on their original material substrates. The bulk of the material is from Egypt, but the study takes account of comparative evidence from other regions of the Graeco-Roman world. Through analysis of developments in the use of letters, variations in formatting conventions, layout and authentication patterns according to the sociocultural background and communicational needs of writers, this book sheds light on changing trends in epistolary practice in Graeco-Roman society over a period of roughly eight hundred years. This book will appeal to scholars of Epistolography, Papyrology, Palaeography, Classics, Cultural History of the Graeco-Roman World.
This volume discusses the Hebrew term 'eres' which is prominently used in Creation and Land theologies in the Bible. Uemura examines whether the term signifies the 'earth' or the 'Land' and traces the historical development of its uses in relation to these two meanings. He offers a survey of all of the occurrences of this term, categorizes them, and discusses the problematic instances in all of the surviving Hebrew and Aramaic texts.
Uemura's examination begins with an analysis of the terms under discussion literally and stylistically in order to discern the semantic field of each term, as well as to determine its stylistic idiomatic uses. He discusses the uses of these two terms in ancient non-Jewish circumstances using materials taken from Phoenician, New Punic, Moabite and Aramaic inscriptions, as well as from an Aramaic papyri from Egypt and Nabataean papyri from Nahal Hever. The aim of this study is to show a cultural background of uses of these terms and Uemura sheds light on the biblical worldview in the Graeco-Roman period.
