Описание: This unique book is the first ever written in isiZulu by a Zulu author. Magema Fuze wrote it in the early 1900s, and published it privately in 1922 under the title Abantu Abamnyama, Lapa Bavela Ngakona.

In this fascinating work, the author gives his views on racial origins and differences, and describes the settlement of the black people throughout Natal. He records the traditional customs of the Zulu people, and gives an overview of Zulu history during the turbulent period of the nineteenth century, from the perspective of the black people who lived through it. Integrated with this is Bishop Colensos account of Natal history, which Fuze reproduces and comments on. Of added interest is Hlonipha Mokoenas foreword that offers insightful commentary on the contextual realities and challenges of the time.

Описание: In Kingdom Come, Tshepo Masango Chéry charts a new genealogy of early twentieth-century Black Christian activists who challenged racism in South Africa before the solidification of apartheid by using faith as a strategy against global racism. Masango Chéry traces this Black freedom struggle and the ways that South African church leaders defied colonial domination by creating, in solidarity with Black Christians worldwide, Black-controlled religious institutions that were geared toward their liberation. She demonstrates how Black Christians positioned the church as a site of political resistance and centered specifically African visions of freedom in their organizing. Drawing on archival research spanning South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Masango Chéry tells a global story of the twentieth century that illuminates the formations of racial identity, state control, and religious belief. Masango Chéry’s recentering of South Africa in the history of worldwide Black liberation changes understandings of spiritual and intellectual routes of dissemination throughout the diaspora.

Описание: In this history of the black peasants of Amazonia, Oscar de la Torre focuses on the experience of African-descended people navigating the transition from slavery to freedom. Drawing on social and environmental history, he connects the Amazonians intimately to their natural landscapes. Relying on the natural world as a repository for traditions, discourses, and strategies that they retrieved especially in moments of conflict, Afro-Brazilians fought for autonomous communities and developed a vibrant ethnic identity that supported their struggles over labor, land, and citizenship.

Prior to abolition, enslaved and escaped blacks found in the tropical forest a source for tools, weapons, and trade—but it was also a cultural storehouse within which they shaped their stories and records of confrontations with slaveowners and state authorities. After abolition, the black peasants' knowledge of local environments continued to be key to their aspirations, allowing them to maintain relationships with powerful patrons and to participate in the protest cycle that led Getulio Vargas to the presidency of Brazil in 1930. In commonly referring to themselves by such names as ""sons of the river,"" black Amazonians melded their agro-ecological traditions with their emergent identity as political stakeholders.

Описание: African American History: The Development of a People provides students with diverse, concise essays that explore the experiences, traditions, and culture of African Americans in the United States from the nation’s early years to today. The readings center on the collective and individual experiences of African Americans and explore the cultural and historical contexts in which they live their lives.Part I of the anthology features readings that correspond to America’s Antebellum Era. The selections speak to slavery, politics, family life, survival, and indomitable will. Part II explores issues of the post-Civil War and Reconstruction eras, including reimagining life after slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, boycotts, the emergence of black power, and more. The final part contains readings from influential figures and political bodies—including former presidents Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama, civil rights leader Booker T. Washington, civil rights activist W.E.B. DuBois, and Supreme Court decisions—that demonstrate how African Americans have challenged and continue to challenge political and social systems through activism.A powerful and engaging anthology, African American History is well-suited for undergraduate and graduate courses in U.S. history, African American history, urban sociology, and black political thought.
