Описание: Expertly taking readers through one of the most transformative periods in Ancient Egypt, Robert Morkot demonstrates how, under the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (c. 1550-1070 BCE), Egypt rose to be the largest and most dominant state of the Late Bronze Age world of western Asia and the eastern Mediterranean. Morkot deftly analyses key aspects of the New Kingdom Era - covering the production of some of Egypt’s most spectacular monuments, such as the Tombs in the Valley of the Kings - and analysing the political careers of some of its most renowned rules: the female pharaoh, Hatshepsut; the empire builder, Thutmose III; the still-controversial religious reformer, Akhenaten; Tutankhamun, and Ramesses II.Morkot also offers readers a wider outlook, examining how the globalisation of the Late Bronze Age brought numerous changes in warfare, resulting in the creation of an empire and sphere of influence that spread up the Nile valley and into the Levant and Syria. The volume explores how Egypt maintained its position through the wealth of its Nilotic empire, with gold from the deserts of Egypt and Nubia, and incense, ivory and ebony from longer-distance trade with neighbouring kingdoms of north-east Africa. With Egypt’s wide-ranging networks stretching from the Aegean to Babylon, and from Anatolia to the Red Sea coast, Morkot highlights how these close contacts brought numerous influences in art and religion to Egypt, but how politically the interconnections ultimately brought the entire region to the point of collapse.

Описание: During the half-millennium from the eleventh through the sixth centuries BC, the power and the glory of the imperial pharaohs of the New Kingdom crumbled in the face of internal crises and external pressures, ultimately reversed by invaders from Nubia and consolidated by natives of the Nile Delta following a series of Assyrian invasions.Much of this era remains obscure, with little consensus among Egyptologists. Against this background, Aidan Dodson reconsiders the evidence and proposes a number of new solutions to the problems of the period. He also considers the era's art, architecture, and archaeology, including the royal tombs of Tanis, one of which yielded the intact burials of no fewer than five pharaohs. Afterglow of Empire is extensively illustrated with images of this material, much of which is little known to non-specialists.

Описание: The ancient Egyptians had very definite views about their neighbours, some positive, some negative. As one would expect, Egyptian perceptions of 'the other' were subject to change over time, especially in response to changing political, social and economic conditions. Thus, as Asiatics became a more familiar part of everyday life in Egypt, and their skills and goods became increasingly important, depictions of them took on more favourable aspects. The investigation by necessity involves a multi-disciplined approach which seeks to combine and synthesize data from a wider variety of sources than drawn upon in earlier studies. By the same token, the book addresses the interests of, and has appeal to, a broad spectrum of scholars and general readers.

Описание:

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Kingdom of Kush, then keep reading...

The Kingdom of Kush was completely forgotten once it met its end. The stories of its might didn't survive in the cultures of its successor kingdoms, possibly because Christianization soon followed, which required the people of the Nubian region to turn toward the east and the myths of the Christian messiah. There was no more room for the divine rulers, Amun and Re, or a place for their sons, the kings of Kush. The kingdom continued to exist in the stories of some classical writers, but it was often considered as nothing more than a distant, probably even imaginary, kingdom, where the uncivilized savages lived.

With the renewed interest in the classical arts of Greece and Rome, the Renaissance rediscovered the existence of Kush. Still, it was not explored until Napoleon's expedition to Egypt in 1798. Even then, it was seen as a part of Egyptian culture. The discoveries made by the 18th- and 19th-century explorers proved there were, in fact, two separate cultures. However, this explanation was greatly influenced by Darwinism. Scholars presented the entirety of Africa as a place where civilized white men ruled over the "uncivilized negroes." Kush was no exception to them, and the general opinion was that Egypt ruled over the uncivilized Kushites. Even the rule of the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty was observed as nothing more than the less fortunate Kushites imitating the superior Egyptians.

It was not until the early 20th century that the Kingdom of Kush received its rightful place in history. When the first archaeological survey of Nubia took place between 1907 and 1911, the distinctive cultural aspects of the Kingdom of Kush emerged, and it was finally seen as a separate entity from Egypt.

In The Kingdom of Kush: A Captivating Guide to an Ancient African Kingdom in Nubia That Once Ruled Egypt, you will discover topics such as

  • Nubia and the Emergence of the Kingdom of Kush
  • From Alara to the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty
