Disability critiques of architecture usually emphasize the need for modification and increased access, but The Architecture of Disability calls for a radical reorientation of this perspective by situating experiences of impairment as a new foundation for the built environment. With its provocative proposal for “the construction of disability,” this book fundamentally reconsiders how we conceive of and experience disability in our world.
Stressing the connection between architectural form and the capacities of the human body, David Gissen demonstrates how disability haunts the history and practice of architecture. Examining various historic sites, landscape designs, and urban spaces, he deconstructs the prevailing functionalist approach to accommodating disabled people in architecture and instead asserts that physical capacity is essential to the conception of all designed space.
By recontextualizing the history of architecture through the discourse of disability, The Architecture of Disability presents a unique challenge to current modes of architectural practice, theory, and education. Envisioning an architectural design that fully integrates disabled persons into its production, it advocates for looking beyond traditional notions of accessibility and shows how certain incapacities can offer us the means to positively reimagine the roots of architecture.
The second volume of the Giessen Papyri (P.Giss. II) includes an edition of two previously unpublished Greek documents. The first one, numbered 127, is a notebook roll from Philadelphia dated to the last years of Vespasian’s reign, containing nine documents concerning overdue rents for land in the ousiac parces; of particular interest is a draft of a complaint regarding peculation addressed to Ammonios, strategos of the Herakleidou meris. The second, numbered 128, is a fiscal codex from the Hermopolite nome, dated to the second half of the fourth century. This papyrus offers direct insight into many taxation issues, including the method of tax assessment based on the concept of kephale, which is still poorly understood; it also provides information regarding key fiscal changes that occurred after the reforms of Diocletian. The editions of these papyri will help scholars to reconstruct specific details of everyday life in Roman and Late Roman Egypt in areas including taxation, monetary systems, land tenure, onomastics, prosopography, administration, and social and economic situations.

Bear supported the Grateful Dead in their early years and gave away as much LSD as he sold--millions of hits. He designed and engineered the infamous Wall of Sound system of the early '70s, just before he began his two years in prison, with Rhoney raising their infant son. He died one year ago, but the era he helped create is now being rediscovered by a new generation interested in the meaning of it all.
Today Rhoney Stanley is a practicing holistic orthodontist in Woodstock, New York. This is her first book.
Tom Davis was an Emmy Award-winning American writer and comedian. He is best known for being one of the original writers for Saturday Night Live and for his former partnership with Al Franken, as half of the comedy duo Franken & Davis. His memoir Thirty-Nine Years of Short-Term Memory Loss: The Early Days of SNL from Someone Who Was There was published in 2010 by Grove Press.
