Описание:

Shadow Negotiators is the first book to demonstrate that United Nations (UN) organizations have intervened to influence the discourse, agenda, and outcomes of international trade lawmaking at the World Trade Organization (WTO). While UN organizations lack a seat at the bargaining table at the WTO, Matias E. Margulis argues that these organizations have acted as shadow negotiators engaged in political actions intended to alter the trajectory and results of multilateral trade negotiations. He draws on analysis of one of the most contested issues in global trade politics, agricultural trade liberalization, to demonstrate interventions by four different UN organizations—the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food (SRRTF).

By identifying several novel intervention strategies used by UN actors to shape the rules of global trade, this book shows that UN organizations chose to intervene in trade lawmaking not out of competition with the WTO or ideological resistance to trade liberalization, but out of concerns that specific trade rules could have negative consequences for world food security—an outcome these organizations viewed as undermining their social purpose to reduce world hunger and protect the human right to food.

Описание:

This book addresses the representation of masculinities in the work of J. M. Coetzee, with a particular focus on the writer’s trilogy: Boyhood (1997), Youth (2002) and Summertime (2009). Provocatively dealing with questions of autobiography, Coetzee’s trilogy provides a panoramic view of a man’s development through various stages of life and, equally, different geographical locations, such as apartheid South Africa, sixties London and South Africa in the throes of democratic revolution.

Attentive to the masculine formations that the trilogy represents, this work draws on conceptual frameworks and methodologies provided by the joint critique of gender and postcolonial studies, and is particularly animated by the discussions raised by men’s studies, a field that is nowadays patently interested in postcolonial / transnational masculinities. In this vein, the work discusses not only aspects related to violence and gendered formations as they occur and manifest themselves in the intersections of the local and global, but also the possibilities of refashioning identities increasingly attentive to an ethics of Otherness, one of the staples of Coetzee’s writing.

Описание: A groundbreaking look at Gaia theory’s intersections with neocybernetic systems theory  Often seen as an outlier in science, Gaia has run a long and varied course since its formulation in the 1970s by atmospheric chemist James Lovelock and microbiologist Lynn Margulis. Gaian Systems is a pioneering exploration of the dynamic and complex evolution of Gaia’s many variants, with special attention to Margulis’s foundational role in these developments.Bruce Clarke assesses the different dialects of systems theory brought to bear on Gaia discourse. Focusing in particular on Margulis’s work-including multiple pieces of her unpublished Gaia correspondence-he shows how her research and that of Lovelock was concurrent and conceptually parallel with the new discourse of self-referential systems that emerged within neocybernetic systems theory. The recent Gaia writings of Donna Haraway, Isabelle Stengers, and Bruno Latour contest its cybernetic status. Clarke engages Latour on the issue of Gaia’s systems description and extends his own systems-theoretical synthesis under what he terms “metabiotic Gaia.” This study illuminates current issues in neighboring theoretical conversations-from biopolitics and the immunitary paradigm to NASA astrobiology and the Anthropocene. Along the way, he points to science fiction as a vehicle of Gaian thought. Delving into many issues not previously treated in accounts of Gaia, Gaian Systems describes the history of a theory that has the potential to help us survive an environmental crisis of our own making.

Praise for The Vaccine-Friendly Plan

"Finally, a book about vaccines that respects parents If you choose only one book to read on the topic, read The Vaccine-Friendly Plan. This impeccably researched, well-balanced book puts you in the driver's seat and empowers you to make conscientious vaccine decisions for your family."--Peggy O'Mara, editor and publisher, Mothering Magazine
"Sure to appeal to readers of all kinds as a friendly, no-nonsense book that cuts through the rhetoric surrounding vaccines. It offers validation to those who avoid some or all, while offering those who do want to vaccinate help on how to do so safely. This is a great book for anyone with children in their lives."--Natural Mother
"A valuable, science-supported guide to optimizing your child's health while you navigate through complex choices in a toxic, challenging world."--Martha Herbert, M.D., Ph.D., Harvard Medical School
"An impressively researched guide, this important book is essential reading for parents. With clear and practical advice for shielding children from harmful toxins, it will compel us all to think differently about how to protect health."--Jay Gordon, M.D., FAAP
"Rather than a one-size-fits-all vaccine strategy, the authors suggest thoughtful, individualized decisions based on research and collaboration between parents and clinicians--a plan to optimize a child's immune system and minimize any risks."--Elizabeth Mumper, M.D., founder and CEO, The Rimland Center for Integrative Pediatrics
"This well-written and thought-provoking book will encourage parents to think through decisions--such as food choices and the timing of vaccines--that affect the well-being of their children. In a world where children's immune systems are increasingly challenged, this is a timely addition to the literature."--Harriet Lerner, Ph.D., bestselling author of The Dance of Anger and The Mother Dance

Описание:

The Big Spider Who Learned How to Swim(R) is the heart-warming story of a spider with a kind disposition and a love of adventure who is taught how to swim by a kindly fish who saved the spider's life after it fell into a lake and nearly drowned. The spider then encourages his peers as he teaches them how to safely cross a puddle.

This feel-good, rhyming Read-to/Read-along story is appropriate for pre-school & elementary school-age children as it inspires the spirit of kindness, empathy and appreciation.

This rhyming story is written as told by the female author who tells of finding a spider who is drowning in a puddle. "I saw a spider drowning in a puddle. I removed him and saved his life. He took a deep breath, smiled at me and asked, will you be my wife?" The sweetness of this encounter sets a delightful pace for a happy tale to ensue wherein the spider hugs the lady goodbye and sets off on an adventure. The spider encounters friendly creatures such as a bluebird and a dragonfly, each giving him a ride on their backs. When the spider falls in the water and once again finds himself in peril, his life is saved by a fish named "Tim" who teaches him how to swim. The spider reflects on his adventure and feels gratitude and loving appreciation for the lady, the bird, the dragonfly and for Tim.

Later, the spider is with a group of "spidery friends" and as they approach a puddle, he explains that they will not walk around the puddle but will swim through it. He told them of his adventures and he taught them how to swim. Expressing thanks to their friend for teaching them how to fearlessly cross the puddle, they happily went on their way.

The story ends with the lady author once again encountering her "spider friend", congratulating him on learning how to swim. She asked him if he found it hard, and he replied "My dear lady", he said, "it was scary at first then became easy after awhile".

The feel-good story ends with the author appreciating the spider. "As I waved again to my sweet spider friend I knew he would be okay. He is brave and kind and has a smart mind, and I know he will return one day".

This story may serve to awaken the reader's awareness that by being kind and helpful to one another, no matter how different we are (e.g. spider and human), happiness and success may prevail.
