This book uses the notion of perezhivanie, a psychological response to an issue that an individual cannot solve using their habitual actions, to describe why and how teachers make decisions and act the way they do, and develop professionally in the push to digital transformation, which is shaping teaching and learning. Unlike earlier work in teacher development, where cognition predominantly served the thinking and decision making processes, here the focus is on the emotion, cognition, and context, united in the notion of perezhivanie. To demonstrate the work of perezhivanie as a unit, the author applies a conceptual framework to the data from qualitative interviews with ten university language teachers about their experience of using technology in their teaching. While teachers responded to issues of technology integration in various ways, a broad pattern emerged, when teachers could not do what they had planned for the lesson due to struggles with technology. Additionally, since perezhivanie exists in several forms, here the author defi nes them as perezhivanie-experiencing, perezhivanie apprehension, and perezhivanie-reflection. The author exemplifies how these forms can provide a theoretically powerful frame for understanding and researching teacher development and, more broadly, human consciousness.

Drawing on interviews with eighty incarcerated individuals in Missouri correctional institutions, Smirnova shows how contradictions in medical practices, social ideals, and legal policies disproportionately criminalize the poor for their social condition. This criminalization further exacerbates and perpetuates drug addiction and poverty. Tracing the processes by which social issues are constructed as biomedical ones that necessitate pharmacological intervention, Smirnova highlights how inequitable surveillance, policing, and punishment of marginalized populations intensify harms associated with both treatment and punishment, especially given that the distinctions between the two have become blurred. By focusing on the stories of people whose pain and pharmaceutical treatment led to incarceration, Smirnova challenges the binary of individual and social problems, effectively exploring how the conceptualization, diagnosis, and treatment of substance use may exacerbate outcomes such as relapse, recidivism, poverty, abuse, and death.

The chapters of this volume provide not only a working definition of such constructions, but also a description of complex adpositions and other complex nominal relators in a variety of European languages, both Indo-European and non-Indo-European, including some languages for which this phenomenon had received little attention, such as Breton and Albanian. Building on synchronic and diachronic corpus-based investigations, the authors show commonalities and specificities of these linguistic items across languages, trying to explain why and how they emerged. The research presented in this volume confirms the wide-spread use of complex adpositions in Europe, and the data reviewed in the final discussion suggests it might be the same in other parts of the world, as well. This book thus offers not only detailed descriptions of complex nominal relators in fifteen languages, but also indications of what to look for in other languages, and how to distinguish between a syntactically free sequence and a genuine complex nominal relator.
