Описание: “I certainly had very extreme views, very violent views… and I certainly did advocate… extreme methods.” So a leading Nyasaland nationalist characterised the struggle for independent Malawi, but Dr Hastings Banda, a highly respected medical doctor based for many years in London was invited back to Nyasaland to lead the movement to independent Malawi and the Malawi National Congress. Here was, or so it seemed, a loyal and progressive Government with pro-Western leadership – a final success in the story of British decolonisation.
Yet within three months all but one of the cabinet ministers had resigned or were dismissed, former ministers fled the country including distinguished members of the independence movement. Even the pro-Congress Europeans feared for their lives.
Colin Baker unravels this potentially disastrous episode in Malawi’s history and in the story of decolonisation. He illuminates not only the immediate post-independence problems of Malawi, a newly independent African state, but charts the growth of Banda’s autocracy. This detailed and revealing study reveals the problems inherent in the whole momentous story of Africa in independence and decolonisation.
Описание: Malawi is one of the smallest and economically the poorest countries in the world. Yet, its impact has given it the name: The "Warm Heart of Africa". In this text, we briefly explore multiple facets of the Malawian people including who they are, their roots, characteristics, and some of their history, culture, environment, education, and healthcare. A landlocked country in the lower southeastern quadrant of Africa, Malawi evolved from British explorers and Scottish missionaries in the 19th century. Since 1994, it has had a democratic form of government. This textbook covers diverse subjects important to the countrys history, culture, environment, education, and healthcare. From personal reflections to research studies, we read about the contributions of the US Peace Corps and Health Volunteers Overseas to Malawis infrastructure, the importance of maize production to the existence of the Malawian people, unique academic programming through US-Malawi partnerships at the College of Medicine and Chancellor Law College, a potential model to improve the continuum of care for people with stroke, and success stories for children with clubfeet and learning disabilities. Creativity and entrepreneurship have enabled drone use for the delivery of medical supplies and to "map" various undeveloped quadrants of Malawi. As one of the first textbooks on Malawi, this one has the unique distinction of showing selected aspects of the country, some of its strengths, limitations, and challenges. Many of the articles were written by Malawian professionals, those working in Malawi, or with intimate knowledge of the country and their chosen topic. Many of the authors have had distinguished careers in academia with substantial research experience, and in the volunteer sector. Nova Science Publishers recognized the importance of Malawi to the African fabric and is on the forefront of sharing it with the rest of the world.

This book argues for the use of Old Testament ethical principles in entrenching constitutionalism in democratic Malawi. This posture is against the background of the already existing sections 12 and 13 of Malawi's Constitution which have moral underpinnings. Using the theories of Divine Command and Deontology, the study discusses ten critical Old Testament ethical principles and elucidate why and how they can be used to entrench constitutionalism in Malawi. The study demonstrates that the giving of the law to Israel was God's model for (codified) national constitutions, aiming at envisioning and entrenching constitutionalism through the principle of justice which apparently, is the heartbeat of the Old Testament ethics and morality. Therefore, to some extent, constitutionalism in Malawi can be entrenched by pursuing justice and protecting its integrity. Very relevant is the study's emphasis that the Decalogue is a Magna Carta for human rights and freedoms. Pertinent also is the scriptural analysis which shows that the threefold nature of government is intrinsically theological as the study's findings demonstrate. These Old Testament study findings show that no one, not even the president, is above the law--thus demonstrating limited governmental powers, separation of powers, accountability, respect for human rights, and rule of law where everyone is under the law and correctable by it. The study's original contribution is in its demonstration that Old Testament ethical principles are the foundation of constitutionalism by showing the theological basis of constitutionalism's tenets of limited government, separation of powers, rule of law, human rights, and accountability. Consequently, the original contribution of this study to the academia is its blending of theological and jurisprudential discourse on good governance based on Old Testament ethical principles and moral values in entrenching constitutionalism in Malawi.
