With the emerging dominance of digital technology, the time is ripe to reconsider the nature of the image. Some say that there is no longer a phenomenal image, only disembodied information (0-1) waiting to be configured. For photography, this implies that a faith in the principle of an "evidential force" - of the impossibility of doubting that the subject was before the lens - is no longer plausible. Technologically speaking, we have arrived at a point where the manipulation of the image is an ever-present possibility, when once it was difficult, if not impossible.
What are the key moments in the genealogy of the Western image which might illuminate the present status of the image? And what exactly is the situation to which we have arrived as far as the image is concerned? These are the questions guiding the reflections in this book. In it we move, in Part 1, from a study of the Greek to the Byzantine image, from the Renaissance image and the image in the Enlightenment to the image as it emerges in the Industrial Revolution.
Part 2 examines key aspects of the image today, such as the digital and the cinema image, as well as the work of philosophers of the image, including: Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin, Gilles Deleuze, Jean-Paul Sartre and Bernard Stiegler.

Italian futurism visualized diverse types of motion, which had been rooted in pervasive kinetic and vehicular forces generated during a period of dramatic modernization in the early 20th century. Yet, as David Mather's sweeping intellectual and art historical scholarship demonstrates, it was the camera-not the engine-that proved to be the key invention against which many futurist ideas and practices were measured.
Overturning several misconceptions about Italian futurism's interest in the disruptive and destructive effects of technology, Futurist Conditions provides a refreshing update to that historical narrative by arguing that the formal and conceptual approaches by futurist visual artists reoriented the possibly dehumanizing effects of mechanized imagery toward more humanizing and spiritual aims. Through its sustained analysis of the artworks and writings of Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, and the Bragaglia brothers, dating to the first decade after the movement's founding in 1909, Mather's account of the their obsession with motion pivots around a 1913 debate on the place and relative import of photography among more traditional artistic mediums-a debate culminating in the expulsion of the Bragaglias, but one that also prompted a number of productive responses by other futurist artists to the world-changing social, political, and economic conditions.

This book is the result of various ongoing assembly platforms linked together under the same name, all organized and initiated by Biljana Ciric and hosted by St Paul St Gallery AUT (2013), Rockbund Art Museum (2018) and Guangdong Times Museum (2019). In the texts presented, writers, curators, and art practitioners in the region revisit the importance of exhibitions as a form and medium presented at assemblies.
The contributors explore how exhibitions can be read and understood across different social and cultural contexts, highlighting differences within the region and inviting new approaches and methodologies that point to possibilities for comparative forms of research. The book draws further awareness to the specificity and diversity of practices found within Asia--and thereby looks to contribute decisively to a (re)mapping of exhibition practices and histories using the different perspectives and local contexts found in this region.
