Описание: In the first scholarly exposition of Maria Montessori’s moral philosophy, Patrick R. Frierson presents an empirically-grounded ethics that takes its start from our tendency to strive for excellence and emphasizes mutual respect, social solidarity, and love. Laying out a compelling, Montessorian approach to ethical life, Frierson constructs an account of human agency based on children, who when attentively at work on self-chosen tasks, have agency worthy of respect. Through this interpretation of children’s agency, he introduces the core concept of Montessorian “character”: in Montessori’s ethics, character provides the ultimate value worthy of direct respect, and those with character have a natural tendency to respect others. Character is enhanced through corporate forms of agency that Montessori calls “social solidarity.” Weaving this educationalist’s ethics with theory from Nietzsche, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, and Marx, Frierson places Montessori in the context of the history of philosophy. His study effectively unites philosophy and education, showing how human ethical life can be enhanced through a moral theory based on the respectful attention to the lived agency of young children.

Описание: One hundred and ten years ago, Maria Montessori, the first female physician in Italy, devised a very different method of educating children, based on her observations of how they naturally learn. In Montessori, Angeline Stoll Lillard shows that science has finally caught up with Maria Montessori. Lillard presents the research behind nine insights that are foundations of Montessori education, describing how each of these insights is applied in the Montessori classroom. In reading this book, parents and teachers alike will develop a clear understanding of what happens in a Montessori classroom and, more important, why it happens and why it works. Lillard explains the scientific basis for Montessori's system and the distinctions between practices in traditional, "Montessomething," and authentic Montessori education. Furthermore, in this new edition, she presents recent studies showing evidence that this alternative to traditional schooling does indeed make a difference. Montessori is indispensable reading for anyone interested in teaching, training, or considering Montessori schooling, in developmental psychology, or in understanding about human learning and education overall.

When you think about school, you are probably thinking about the elementary school years you spent sitting at your desk and listening to your teacher most of the day. While this school method is still the most popular to date, another lesser-known school method is becoming increasingly popular among parents and educators. The Montessori school method has become very popular in recent years. However, this type of school uses a method very different from the conservative one, and its application is, therefore, still somewhat controversial.
Dr. Maria Montessori was a professor of anthropology in Rome in the early twentieth century. Maria Montessori was heavily influenced by Friedrich Froebel, who invented the nursery school, and Johann Henrich Pestalozzi, and firmly believed that children learned through activities. He invented a new philosophy on raising children. Maria Montessori's philosophy and methodology teach that children learn more in a stimulating environment. According to her philosophy, a teacher is more of a "keeper of the environment" and helps to create one that facilitates the self-guided learning process for children.
Today many teachers and parents strongly follow this type of education, as evidenced by the growing number of Montessori schools in the world.
What are the differences between Montessori schools and traditional schools?
In traditional classrooms, children with children of the same age are grouped together and follow exactly the same lessons, participate in the same activities and work.
Montessori classrooms are very different. Typically, a Montessori classroom is designed for children of different ages and follows an open concept style with different work areas. Lessons are generally held in small groups of children, while other children work or study alone. This concept allows children to expand their individual and social development.
In a traditional school, the teacher acts as the one who provides all the information offered by the school and mainly uses books and a rigorous methodology. In a Montessori school, the teacher acts as a guide and often mixes conventional teaching aids, but also other materials such as stories and objects. In Montessori schools, students often take responsibility for planning their work and time.
Montessori students - strong artists
While many parents firmly believe in the Montessori method, this school method is still quite unknown and often controversial. However, it has been shown by psychologists in the United States that the children of the Montessori schools not only received an excellent education but, in some areas, even exceeded the children who attended traditional schools. Furthermore, students attending Montessori schools seemed to outperform others when it came to social skills and behaviors.

Описание: Drawing on the work of Maria Montessori and contemporary virtue epistemologists such as Linda Zagzebski and Jason Baehr, Intellectual Agency and Virtue Epistemology presents a new interpretation of the nature of intellectual agency and its associated virtues.
Focusing on Montessori's interpretation of specific virtues including sensory attentiveness, intellectual love and intellectual humility, it discusses why these are virtues, why one can be held responsible for them, and how they relate to each other. Moreover, it considers pedagogical implications of considering these capacities to be virtues. Intellectual Agency and Virtue Epistemology not only reveals the value of seeing Montessori as a virtue epistemologist, it encourages educationalists to take seriously the cultivation of intellectual virtues as an important part of the education of children.
