Описание: In Edible Arrangements, Elizabeth Blake explores the way modernist writing about eating delves into larger questions about bodily and literary pleasure. Drawing on insights from the field of food studies, she makes dual interventions into queer theory and modernist studies: first, locating an embrace of queerness within modernist depictions of the pleasure of eating, and second, showing how this queer consumption shapes modernist notions of literary form, expanding and reshaping conventional genres. Drawing from a promiscuous archive that cuts across boundaries of geography and canonicity, Blake demonstrates how modernist authors draw on this consuming queerness to restructure a range of literary forms. Each chapter constellates a set of seemingly disparate writers working in related modes—such as the satirical writings of Richard Bruce Nugent, Virginia Woolf, and Katherine Mansfield—in order to demonstrate how writing about eating can both unsettle the norms of bodily pleasure and those of genre itself.

Описание:

Focusing on previously unexplored theoretical gaps, limitations, and fresh avenues of inquiry within the canon and scholarship of Irish modernism, this book interrogates marginalised and neglected figures and genres to develop a more attentive and fluid theoretical space in which to reflect upon the field. Probing Irish modernism's responsiveness to contemporary theory beyond postcolonial and Irish studies, this book uses diverse paradigms including weak theory, biopolitics, posthumanism, and the nonhuman turn, to rethink Irish modernism's organising themes: nationalism, martyrdom, war, state violence, prostitution, temporality, death, mourning. At the same time, cutting-edge work from queer theory and gender studies draws urgent attention to the too-often marginalised importance of women's writing and queer expression to the Irish avant-garde.

Foregrounding Irish modernist interfaces between visual, literary, musical, dramatic, cinematic, epistolary and journalistic media, this book focuses on writers, artists and cultural figures such as Hannah Berman, Eva Gore-Booth, Esther Roper, Forrest Reid, Mary Davenport O'Neill, Sheila Wingfield, Ethel Colburn Mayne, Edward Martyn, Jane Seosamh У Torna, and Mбirtнn У Cadhain. At the same time, this volume asks how consideration of Irish modernism through the diverse genres and movements of these neglected and liminal figures compels us to reconsider the position of the "major (Irish) modernists" - such as Synge, Yeats, Shaw, Joyce, O'Nolan, Beckett, MacGreevy, and Bowen - in this redrawn canon.

Описание: This book focuses on previously unexplored gaps, limitations and avenues of inquiry within the canon and scholarship of Irish modernism to develop a more attentive and fluid theoretical account of this conceptual field. Foregrounding interfaces between literary, visual, musical, dramatic, cinematic, epistolary and journalistic media, these essays introduce previously peripheral writers, artists and cultural figures to debates about Irish modernism: Hannah Berman, Ethel Colburn Mayne, Mary Devenport O’Neill, Sheila Wingfield, Freda Laughton, Rhoda Coghill, Elizabeth Bowen, Mairtin O Cadhain, Joseph Plunkett, Liam O’Flaherty, Edward Martyn, Jane Barlow, Seosamh O Torna, Jack B. Yeats and Brian O’Nolan all feature here to interrogate the term’s implications.Probing Irish modernism’s responsiveness to contemporary theory beyond postcolonial and Irish studies, Irish Modernisms: Gaps, Conjectures, Possibilities uses diverse paradigms, including weak theory, biopolitics, posthumanism and the nonhuman turn, to rethink Irish modernism’s organising themes: the material body, language, mediality, canonicity, war, state violence, prostitution, temporality, death, mourning. Across the volume, cutting-edge work from queer theory and gender studies draws urgent attention to the too-often marginalized importance of women’s writing and queer expression to the Irish avant-garde, while critical reappraisals of the coordinates of race and national history compel us to ask not only where and when Irish modernism occurred, but also whose modernism it was?

Описание:

Explores modernist aesthetics and cultural exchange in Britain, France and beyond

  • Offers cutting-edge explorations of different aspects of artistic exchange between Britain and France, written by experts on both sides of the Channel
  • Provides original close readings of canonical and marginalised modernist texts
  • Opens up new conceptual paradigms by probing multiple meanings related to 'crossing' and 'channelling' modernism
  • Organises chapters around three key themes of 'translating', 'fashioning', 'mediating' that intervene in the new modernist studies

Described by Katherine Mansfield in 1921 as 'a great cold sword between you and your dear love Adventure', in the early twentieth century the English Channel, or 'La Manche' in French, represented both a political and intellectual barrier between European avant-gardism and British restraint, and a bridge for cultural connection and aesthetic innovation. Organised around key terms 'Translating', 'Fashioning' and 'Mediating', this book presents ten original essays by scholars working on both sides of the Channel. Cross-Channel Modernisms historicises artistic exchanges in Britain, France and beyond and proposes a rich conceptual apparatus of 'crossings' and 'channels' through which we can read modernism and understand it as emerging from, and intervening in, an always-already shifting, multivalent, international context.

Описание: Drawing on a vast archive, Susan Stanford Friedman recasts modernity as a networked, circulating, and recurrent phenomenon producing multiple aesthetic innovations across millennia. Rejecting the modernist concepts of marginality, othering, and major/minor, Friedman instead favors rupture, mobility, speed, networks, and divergence.
