Описание: Named One of the "Best Art Books of 2018" by the New York Times

Fifty years after Martin Luther King Jr.'s death—and at a time when race relations and social justice are again at the forefront of our country's consciousness—this book expands on a Frist Art Museum exhibition to present a selection of approximately one hundred photographs that document an important period in Nashville's struggle for racial equality. The images were taken between 1957, the year that desegregation in public schools began, and 1968, when the National Guard was called in to surround the state capitol in the wake of the civil rights leader's assassination in Memphis.

Of central significance are photographs of lunch counter sit-ins in early 1960, led by a group of students, including John Lewis (who contributed the book's foreword) and Diane Nash, from local historically black colleges and universities. The demonstrations were so successful that King stated just a few weeks later at Fisk University: "I did not come to Nashville to bring inspiration but to gain inspiration from the great movement that has taken place in this community." The role that Nashville played in the national civil rights movement as a hub for training students in nonviolent protest and as the first Southern city to integrate places of business is a story that warrants reexamination.

The book also provides an opportunity to consider the role of images and the media in shaping public opinion, a relevant subject in today's news-saturated climate. Photographs from the archives of both daily newspapers are included: the Tennessean, which was the more liberal publication, and the Nashville Banner, a conservative paper whose leadership seemed less interested in covering events related to racial issues. Some of the photographs in the exhibition had been selected to be published in the papers, but many were not, and their disclosure reveals insight into the editorial process. In several images, other photojournalists and news crews are visible, serving as a reminder of the almost constant presence of the camera during these historic times.

Essays by Linda Wynn of Fisk University and the Tennessee Historical Commission and Susan H. Edwards, executive director of the Frist Art Museum, offer historical context on Nashville during the civil rights era and on photojournalism, respectively. Congressman John Lewis's foreword recounts memories of his time in Nashville and reminds us that there is still work to be done to build King's Beloved Community.

Описание: Was Nashville once home to a giant race of humans? No, but this fake history of a race of Pre-Nashville Giants isn`t the only bad history of what, and who, was here before Nashville. This book is the first effort by legitimate archaeologists to articulate the history of what really happened before Nashville happened.

Описание:

Guide to Civil War Nashville (2nd Edition) takes you on a 50-mile tour of 25 historical sites defining the Battle of Nashville and the Union occupation of Tennessee's capital. Illustrated with modern and wartime photographs, touring and battle maps, and diagrams, the guide also explores the plight of citizens living under the gun and the wartime role of Nashville. Also included are the tour map, precise driving directions with GPS coordinates, historical-marker text and locations, illustrated orders of battle, Medal of Honor recipients, and information about other Middle Tennessee sites. All of the sites on the tour include original photographs.
In addition to a timeline and map of military operations, the book covers the fall of the river forts and the capture of Nashville by Union forces in February 1862, prompting the Great Panic. The role of the river transports and the military railroad system is thoroughly explored, along with the controversies of Federal occupation. A map of Nashville in 1864 shows the city's infrastructure. The pride of the Federal engineers is Fort Negley, a tourism site which interprets the ruins of the largest stone fortification built during the war.
Three historic cemeteries are explored, complete with maps of burial sites. Three antebellum plantation mansions (Belmont, Travellers Rest, and Belle Meade) are now renovated and open to the public in all their splendor. Also examined at the Tennessee State Capitol complex (built right before the war) and the magnificent newly built Tennessee State Museum. Many of the city's structures, including four extant churches on the tour, were used as military hospitals during the fighting.
A lengthy article explores the decisive 1864 Battle of Nashville, the last major military activity in the Western Theater. Another article explores the skirmish on the Cumberland River prior to the main battle, between Federal gunboats and the Confederate cavalry. Four detailed maps, designed in coordination with Battle of Nashville Preservation Society Historian Ross Massey, illustrate the troop movements both days of the battle. There is no preserved battlefield today, urban development has obliverated most of it. However, the tour includes a dozen battle sites, including the famous Shy's Hill (known as Compton's Hill at the time).
This fact-packed guidebook also includes pages on Fortress Rosecrans and Fort Granger, a listing of other Civil War sites in Middle Tennessee, and a bibliography.
The first edition of Guide to Civil War Nashville was published in 2004 under the auspices of the Battle of Nashville Preservation Society.

Описание:

In a nation reinventing itself following victory in World War II, Nashville's self-portrait blended old with new. New businesses and skyscrapers, a shopping mall, the Interstate system, school integration, and other changes would ultimately bring Nashville into line with the direction of the nation at large, but alongside nationwide trends were treasures unique to the city: Fair Park for thrill-seekers, Sulphur Dell for baseball fans, the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman for music, and the Maxwell House for visitors still arriving through Union Station and now from the air at Berry Field. In this companion volume to Historic Photos of Nashville, Ashley Driggs Haugen leads a tour past many Nashville landmarks from the recent past, reminiscing with Nashvillians who can remember and informing those new to the city who may not. Nearly 200 images reproduced in vivid black-and-white show the Opry at the Ryman, construction of the L&C Tower, 100 Oaks Mall, the Municipal Auditorium, Harveys Department Store downtown, and countless other subjects from yesteryear that remain key to the city's past and present.

Описание:

The consequences of the Battle of Nashville, which took place December 15-16, 1864, are still being debated, but one thing is certain: the Union victory there marked a major turning point in the War of 1861. After losing three battles in a row, including Spring Hill (November 29) and Franklin (November 30), Confederate General John Bell Hood and his troops were forced to flee southward, leaving the all-important region of Middle Tennessee largely under Union control. Confederate power in the Western Theater had been vanquished, for as Yankees loudly and proudly proclaimed, they had "crushed the backbone of the rebellion," a victory that helped lead to Lee's surrender at Appomattox just a few months later.
There are serious problems with this simplistic view, however. The Union win at Nashville was not "a remarkable display of Northern military skill," nor was the Confederate defeat "an illustration of the inferiority of Southern generals," as we have been taught. For one thing, the North had 82,000 soldiers at Nashville, the South a mere 20,000. In addition to a four-to-one numerical advantage, the North had unlimited funds, weaponry, ammunition, clothing, and food, while many of Hood's men were starving, coatless, and barefoot.
As for the so-called "Rebellion," the Conservative South idolized the Union and therefore would not have "rebelled" against it. What she was actually rebelling against was the Liberal takeover of Washington, which began with the election of Left-wing Abraham Lincoln (the two parties were reversed in the 1860s), who publicly promised to overthrow the Constitution in order to implement his progressive policies. Furthermore, the Confederate Cause was not slavery, racism, or treason, as our history books falsely preach. It was, and still is, conservatism, a principle that is stronger and more alive today than ever before. Clearly "the backbone of the rebellion" was not "crushed" at Nashville
So what are the facts about this famous conflict? In his book The Battle of Nashville: Recollections of Confederate and Union Soldiers, award-winning author and historian Colonel Lochlainn Seabrook allows those who were there to answer this question. After reading the 30 eyewitness accounts he provides, the reader will have a much better understanding of the conflict, of the battles that led up to Nashville (which was never meant to be fought), and even of the War itself. Illustrated with rare images and generously footnoted, Col. Seabrook also includes a thought-provoking introduction, battle statistics, 19th-Century maps, a pertinent appendix, and a comprehensive bibliography. A companion to his classic books The Battle of Spring Hill and The Battle of Franklin, The Battle of Nashville is available in paperback and hardcover.
Col. Seabrook's other titles include: Abraham Lincoln Was a Liberal, Jefferson Davis Was a Conservative; Everything You Were Taught About the Civil War is Wrong, Ask a Southerner ; Lincoln's War: The Real Cause, the Real Winner, the Real Loser; Confederate Monuments: Why Every American Should Honor Confederate Soldiers and Their Memorials.
