Описание: This book presents essential teaching skills and tools for nurse educators. It begins with a discussion of the trends in nursing education and the principles of teaching and learning. The book then explores topics such as classroom teaching, clinical experiences, teaching in the simulation laboratory, and online learning. Each chapter discusses the basics of teaching and learning in the specific environment, followed by scenarios that focus on the issues encountered by nursing faculty in these settings. The scenarios present the key issues under consideration, recommend actions that faculty members can institute to address the issues, and describe rationales and solutions based on best evidence. The book also includes specific tools designed to assist nurse educators in preparation for the teaching role, such as examples of course syllabi, program outcomes, clinical contracts, and action plans. Nurse Educator’s Guide to Best Teaching Practice is a valuable resource for novice and experienced educators in managing the challenges inherent in nursing education.
Описание: Abstract: This study examined the self-identified reasons individuals perceived as helping or hindering them from making health behavior changes after a risk assessment. A corporation in the Southeastern US contracted with a community hospital to provide health risk assessment services to their employees. Forty six of these individuals, identified as being at risk were interviewed by phone eight months later with a researcher developed 12 question interview protocol. Sample included 30 males, 16 females, 59% Caucasian, with most frequent age range being 31-40. A statistical difference was found between the responses of males and females as to whether the workplace affected their health behaviors. 61% of males vs 89% of females. Overall 73% of individuals felt their place of work affected their health behavior with 47% identifying a negative effect. One third of the individuals received results they did not expect. Seventy four percent felt the assessment helped them but 50% wanted more information to correct the problems identified. Eighty percent identified someone who had an impact on their health behaviors with support as the most important method of impact. Sixty-seven percent identified events affecting their health behavior, with tragic events identified most often and the majority of events perceived as helpful (including events identified as tragic). Pride and self image were identified most frequently as helping behavior change. Health, seeing positive results, and support were identified most often as incentives for health behavior change. No respondents rated themselves as unhealthy. One of the interests of the author was locus of control and whether people are motivated internally to make changes or believe that outcomes are a result of external forces, luck, fate or controlled by others. In summary, there is considerable variability in the reasons people identify for making health behavior changes and educators (and health care providers as educators) need to recognize these individual differences when working with clients. The implications identified at the end of the study relate to educators, nurses/health care providers and for corporations/businesses, especially because of the self-identified impact work environment has on individuals. Описание: Describes how nursing professionals can mitigate the maternal health crisis through advocacy and improved practice. This graduate-level nursing text and professional clinical reference is the first to comprehensively address the escalating crisis in U.S. maternal health—our country experiences the highest maternal mortality among developed nations—and provides strategies and roadmaps for improved outcomes. It challenges the current approach to ameliorating the maternal crisis, which embeds maternal care into “child health” and ”women’s health,” and characterizes maternal health as a distinct, contemporary epidemiological crisis in America. At its heart, the book calls for the application of nursing knowledge and skill in advocating for and changing practices. The text examines the social determinants responsible for the crisis, including structural and systemic economic and political forces, declining accessibility to maternal care, and lack of a national effort to improve maternal health. With a strong public focus, the book engages readers through narratives and interactive critical thinking exercises in analyzing the problem and related structural and systemic barriers. It offers guidelines for advocacy and improved practice while fostering creative thinking by which readers can imagine their own solutions. Specific issues addressed include the current status of health care delivery, the public health safety net, practice-policy initiatives, specific sociocultural factors contributing to enhanced risk, myths and impugning attitudes about childbearing women, the life-long impact of maternal health neglect, and the contribution of nursing to advocacy, prevention, and improved practice. Key Features: Synthesizes key data on the maternal health crisis in America focusing on nursing leadership and contributions Underscores the need for a collaborative public health nursing perspective in addressing the maternal health crisis Examines social determinants responsible for the crisis Presents exercises and narratives for advocacy and improved practice Spotlights maternal health as a specific entity Includes learning objectives, expert opinions, key questions to guide critical thinking, brief summary, and references in each chapter
