Описание:

This fascinating biography of the late Colin Powell brings to light his towering achievements and errors in judgment during a lifetime devoted to public service.

Until he passed away in 2021, Colin Powell was revered as one of America’s most trusted and admired leaders. This biography demonstrates that Powell’s decades-long development as an exemplary subordinate is crucial to understanding his astonishing rise from a working-class immigrant neighborhood to the highest echelons of military and political power, including his roles as the country’s first Black national security advisor, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and secretary of state.

Once an aimless, ambitionless teenager who barely graduated from college, Powell became an extraordinarily effective and staunchly loyal subordinate to many powerful superiors who, in turn, helped to advance his career. By the time Powell became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he had developed into the consummate follower—motivated, competent, composed, honorable, and independent. The quality of Powells followership faltered at times, however, while in Vietnam, during the Iran-Contra scandal, and after he became George W. Bushs secretary of state. Powell proved a fallible patriot, and in the course of a long and distinguished career he made some grave and consequential errors in judgment. While those blunders do not erase the significance of his commendable achievements amid decades of public service, we can learn much from his good and bad leadership.

Описание:

Her name is Good.

And her father had a dream.

He built that dream out of a Georgia swamp with his bare hands and strength of will.
It isn't Good's dream, though. She has other plans.

But her father's sudden death, her love for him, and his near mythic and ghostly presence on the property have kept her feeling obligated to maintaining and operating the dying Starlite Drive-in theater. She also feels responsible for her father's old friends - the drive-in being their home and livelihood.

Good's art, along with her hopes and dreams, have taken a firm backseat to the daily tasks of running a business and wrestling with a massive, temperamental and outdated movie projector she calls 'the beast'. All the while she faces down a huge, white screen that seems like a never blinking eye keeping watch of her every move.

She's certain she'll never escape. She also has a lot on her plate right now.

The Georgia winter was a short one and there's plenty to do before the crumbling Starlite will be ready for the upcoming season.

What she certainly doesn't need is a handsome stranger to come wandering into her life. He has only one name, drives a classic car in showroom condition, and has odd burn scars on the palms of his hands. To top it off, he claims to have amnesia.

But Elvis likes him. And Elvis means the world to Good.

While she hasn't the time nor the patience for any of this, she can hear Elvis saying plain as day: "There's a story here what needs a tellin'."

You see, a new season is about to open for the Starlite.

Yes sir, a whole lot of new is about to open up.

Описание:

Zeph and Lee are an elderly couple living a simple life on their Tennessee farm, their hearts deeply wounded long ago by the tragic death of their little boy, killed in a hit-and-run.
When Zeph's brother passes away, the couple take in their nephew and try their best to provide him with a stable, loving home. Though the couple never speak of their past heartache, not even with each other, the nephew grows up resentful, never feeling he "measures up" to the son they lost.
Zeph bears the worst scars from the couple's painful day, having been the one to discover his son's broken body on the side of the road. Though he remains stoic and solid, always caring for his wife and nephew the best he can, he burrows ever deeper into himself and his personal sorrow.
One day, while at his favorite fishing hole, a stranger enters the carefully insulated world Zeph has created for himself, and Zeph is unexpectedly confronted by thoughts of what his own son could have grown to be.
The young man is afflicted with a strange amnesia, making him a mystery even to himself, his identity and origins unknown. Odd burn scars across his palms suggest a painful past, and he is ever haunted by fleeting glimpses of another place and time-fragmented memories he can't be sure are even true.
The two men form an unexpected bond from the unexpressed needs of their souls-one for a lost son, the other for a lost identity and home.
What's been kept secret for far too long hovers between these two men like the morning mist on a serene pond-secrets that, once uncovered, may bring healing to one, a path home for the other.
