Описание: This book helps the reader make use of the mathematical models of biological phenomena starting from the basics of programming and computer simulation. Computer simulations based on a mathematical model enable us to find a novel biological mechanism and predict an unknown biological phenomenon. Mathematical biology could further expand the progress of modern life sciences. Although many biologists are interested in mathematical biology, they do not have experience in mathematics and computer science. An educational course that combines biology, mathematics, and computer science is very rare to date. Published books for mathematical biology usually explain the theories of established mathematical models, but they do not provide a practical explanation for how to solve the differential equations included in the models, or to establish such a model that fits with a phenomenon of interest. MATLAB is an ideal programming platform for the beginners of computer science. This book starts from the very basics about how to write a programming code for MATLAB (or Octave), explains how to solve ordinary and partial differential equations, and how to apply mathematical models to various biological phenomena such as diabetes, infectious diseases, and heartbeats. Some of them are original models, newly developed for this book. Because MATLAB codes are embedded and explained throughout the book, it will be easy to catch up with the text. In the final chapter, the book focuses on the mathematical model of the proneural wave, a phenomenon that guarantees the sequential differentiation of neurons in the brain. This model was published as a paper from the author’s lab (Sato et al., PNAS 113, E5153, 2016), and was intensively explained in the book chapter “Notch Signaling in Embryology and Cancer”, published by Springer in 2020. This book provides the reader who has a biological background with invaluable opportunities to learn and practice mathematical biology.

Описание: 'Radlin has done a nice job in producing a textbook which provides a learner friendly introduction to difference equations. It would suit as a core text for a first year course in the topic, aimed, as the title suggests, at physical science or engineering undergraduates. The student who is prepared to work through the book will get a good grounding in basic techniques and gain a feel for the possible behaviours of standard equations. He will also be given some indication of the usefulness and potential complexity of discrete systems in modern science and engineering.'London Mathematical SocietyWe introduce interdisciplinary research and get students and the audience familiarized with the difference equations; solving them explicitly, determining the long-term behavior of solutions (convergence, boundedness and periodicity). We help to develop intuition in analyzing convergence of solutions in terms of subsequences and analyzing patterns of periodic cycles. Our book helps you learn applications in biology, economics and business, computer science and engineering.

Описание:

"This book contains a clear presentation of nonstandard finite difference schemes for the numerical integration of differential equations. A set of rules for constructing nonstandard finite difference schemes is also presented. An important feature of the book is the illustration of the various discrete modeling principles, by their application to a large number of both ordinary and partial differential equations."

Mathematical Reviews

This second edition of Nonstandard Finite Difference Models of Differential Equations provides an update on the progress made in both the theory and application of the NSFD methodology during the past two and a half decades. In addition to discussing details related to the determination of the denominator functions and the nonlocal discrete representations of functions of dependent variables, we include many examples illustrating just how this should be done.

Of real value to the reader is the inclusion of a chapter listing many exact difference schemes, and a chapter giving NSFD schemes from the research literature. The book emphasizes the critical roles played by the "principle of dynamic consistency" and the use of sub-equations for the construction of valid NSFD discretizations of differential equations.

Combining empirical physiology and nonlinear dynamics, this text provides an introduction to the simulation and modeling of dynamic phenomena in cell biology and neuroscience. It introduces mathematical modeling techniques alongside cellular electrophysiology. Topics include membrane transport and diffusion, the biophysics of excitable membranes, the gating of voltage and ligand-gated ion channels, intracellular calcium signalling, and electrical bursting in neurons and other excitable cell types. It introduces mathematical modeling techniques such as ordinary differential equations, phase plane, and bifurcation analysis of single-compartment neuron models. With analytical and computational problem sets, this book is suitable for life sciences majors, in biology to neuroscience, with one year of calculus, as well as graduate students looking for a primer on membrane excitability and calcium signalling.
