Описание: The thesis presents a systematic study of the Mpemba effect in a colloidal system with a micron-sized particle diffusing in a water bath. While the Mpemba effect, where a system’s thermal relaxation time is a non-monotonic function of the initial temperature, has been observed in water since Aristotle’s era, the underlying mechanism of the effect is still unknown. Recent studies indicate that the effect is not limited to water and has been studied both experimentally and numerically in a wide variety of systems. By carefully designing a double-well potential using feedback-based optical tweezers, the author demonstrates that an initially hot system can sometimes cool faster than an initially warm system. The author also presents the first observation in any system of another counterintuitive effect—the inverse Mpemba effect—where the colder of the two samples reaches the thermal equilibrium at a hot temperature first. The results for both the observations agree with theoretical predictions based on the Fokker-Planck equation. The experiments reveal that, for carefully chosen conditions, a strong version of both of the effects are observed where a system can relax to the bath temperature exponentially faster than under typical conditions.

Описание: Integrating fundamental research with the technical applications of this rapidly evolving field, Structure and Functional Properties of Colloidal Systems clearly presents the connections between structure and functional aspects in colloid and interface science. It explores the physical fundamentals of colloid science, new developments of synthesis and conditioning, and many possible applications. TheoryDivided into three parts, the book begins with a discussion of the theoretical side of colloid dynamics. It then transitions to dynamically arrested states and capillary forces in colloidal systems at fluid interfaces. StructureCovering the structural aspects of different colloidal systems, the second section examines electric double layers and effective interactions as well as the structure of extremely bimodal suspensions and filaments made up of microsized magnetic particles. The contributors analyze the role played by the attractive interaction, confinement, and external fields on the structure of colloidal systems. They also discuss structural aspects in food emulsions and the rheological properties of structured fluids. Functional MaterialsThe last part focuses on examples of functional colloids. These include polymer colloids, protein-functionalized colloidal particles, magnetic particles, metallic nanoparticles, micro- and nanogels, responsive microgels, colloidal photonic crystals, microfluidics, gel-glass dispersed liquid crystals (GDLCs) devices, and nanoemulsions. This volume provides a sound understanding of the link between the structure and functional properties in two- and three-dimensional colloidal systems. It describes techniques to functionalize colloids, characterization methods, the physical fundamentals of structure formation, diffusion dynamics, transport properties in equilibrium, the physical fundamentals of nonequilibrium systems, the measuring principles to exploit properties in applications, the differences in designing lab experiments and devices, and several application examples.

Описание:

Molecular and Colloidal Electro-Optics presents cohesive coverage from internationally recognized experts on new approaches and developments in both theoretical and experimental areas of electro-optic science. It comprises a well-integrated yet multi-disciplinary treatment of fundamental principles, strategies, and applications of electro-optic techniques for the characterization of macromolecular, small-particle, and nanomolecular systems.

Following a historical review of post-war advances in electro-optics of disperse systems, the first part of the book focuses on the latest achievements in electro-optic theory, particularly low-frequency relaxation. It offers comparative discussions and experimental data to accompany different viewpoints on the origin of the low-frequency effects and multiple theoretical constructions. The second part highlights the unique advantage of using electro-optics as an alternative to conventional characterization and analysis of colloidal systems. Demonstrating the sensitivity of electro-optic methods to interparticle interactions, the book explains how these methods are used to analyze particle surface electric states, evaluate phase transitions, and determine physical properties.

As the first treatment of this subject to surface in more than fifteen years, Molecular and Colloidal Electro-Optics is a definitive, up-to-date portrait of modern colloidal electro-optic science. This one-stop reference to the latest theory, methods, and applications is ideal for advanced graduate students and researchers in biophysical chemistry, microbiology, polymer, colloid, and nanoscience.

Описание:

Colloidal self-assembly has the potential to revolutionize the way we engineer and develop novel materials. Thanks to a paradigm shift in recent years, colloidal building blocks with increasingly complex shapes and functionalities, are opening up new avenues in bottom-up material design. Self-Assembly of Nano- and Micro-structured Materials using Colloidal Engineering cover the recent breakthroughs in the design and manufacture of functional colloids at the micro- and nanoscale level, and analyses how these functionalities can be exploited to develop self-assembly pathways towards nano- and micro-structured materials. As we are seeking increasingly complex functions for colloidal superstructures, in silico design has a critical role to play to

guide experimental fabrication by reducing the element of trial-and-error that would be involved otherwise in the synthetic routes.

Self-Assembly of Nano- and Micro-structured Materials using Colloidal Engineering captures the state of the art of micro- and nanoscale colloid engineering, which has added a new dimension to the field of colloid science and will specifically provide insight into how anisotropic colloidal interactions are rationally engineered through the use of shapes and surface chemistry, and exploited to fabricate colloidal superstructures via self-assembly. In addition to novel experimental approaches, recent developments in computational modelling will be presented to offer a broader vision

of the full arsenal of designing tools that are available to the modern materials scientist.

  • Explores the engineering of nano- and micro-sized functionalized colloids for their self-assembly into colloidal superstructures
  • Focuses on promoting feedback between experiment, theory and computation in this cross-disciplinary research area
  • Shows how colloid science plays a crucial role in the bottom-up fabrication of nanostructured materials
