Описание: Book chapters are authored by participants in the International Meeting on Staging Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Implications for Etiopathogenesis and Treatment, held in Moj?car (Almer?a) Spain from 14-18 October 2009. Chapters are organized into four sections on themes encompassed by Staging Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Clinical Staging in the Pathophysiology of Psychotic and Affective Disorders, Staging Perspectives in Neurodevelopmental Aspects of Neuropsychiatry, Epigenetics and Biomarkers in the Staging of Neuropsychiatric Disorders, and Staging Neurodegenerative Disorders. This volume should serve as a resource for physicians and neuroscientists alike, highlighting the importance of staging neuropsychiatric disorders and the underlying mechanistic dysfunction, for prevention and treatment strategies at different stages of disease progression. Описание: Inflammatory processes have been implicated in the pathophysiology of a variety of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke and mUltiple sclerosis. It is now widely accepted that the brain, considered to be an "immunologically privileged" organ, can exhibit immune and autoimmune responses, and it is these responses that may in fact be responsible for many neural pathologies. The participants of the workshop VI Preface Research over the past decade has demonstrated the pivotal role of the microglia in the neuroinflammatory process, and more recent work in the field of chemokines has firmly established their important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disease states. Inevitably with the wealth of research being conducted in the field of neuroinflammation comes the hope of identifying novel targets for therapeutic intervention in the inflammatory process which may im- pact on neurodegenerative diseases. The meeting "Neuroinflammation - From Bench to Bedside" aimed to cover the whole spectrum of research currently being pursued in this exciting field, literally taking the participants from the bench - study- ing the importance of the microglia in the inflammatory process and the involvement, in particular, of the rapidly expanding chemokine family in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases - to the bedside - and the possibilities for novel treatment of disorders as di- verse as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, stroke and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD).

Описание: Accumulation of glia, gliosis, in various neurological disorders is not a static scar, but actively involved in pathogenesis of various neurological and psychiatric disorders, where glial cells produce both inflammatory and neurotrophic factors. These factors may play a role in neuronal damage, but also have a protective and reparative function by inducing neuroinflammation. However, definition as well as the mechanisms of neuroinflammation is not yet clear. We first define acute, chronic and non-classical neuroinflammation. Glial cells are activated by a variety of stimuli via receptors on glial cells. Toll like receptors (TLR) are one of these receptors. In response to harmful stimuli, neurons produce factors as either eat-me or help-me signals. These factors include cytokines, chemokines and damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP). Some of them activate glial cells via TLR, and function to protect neurons or further induce neuroinflammation. Thus, the interaction between neuron-glia and glia-glia is a main feature of neuroinflammation. Glial cells communicate with other glial or neural cells via gap-junctions. The communication may also be important for the understanding of neuroinflammation. Oligodendrocytes-neurons communication may be critical in either myelination or demyelination. Damage of blood-brain barrier (BBB) is common feature of both inflammatory and degenerative neurological disorders. Thus, relation of BBB damage and functions of glial cell may also be important in the development of neuroinflammation. In this book, we focused on neuron-glia interaction of various aspects for understanding of pathophysiology of neuroinflammation in development of inflammatory as well as degenerative neurological disorders.

Описание: State of the art reviews by experts in the fields of neuroscience, immunology, microbiology/infectious diseases and pharmacology addressing the convergence of the immune system (neuroinflammation) and the loss of neurons (neurodegeneration). Many of the diseases that are discussed in the book are of epidemic proportion, e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, viral encephalitides and substance abuse. In addition to discussions of the involvement of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in these disorders, scientific reviews are presented on the cells and mediators that participate in defense of and damage to the nervous system. With rare exception, no or inadequate treatment exists for the diseases discussed in this book. An underlying premise of the book is that understanding of their shared pathogenic mechanisms will lead to improved therapies. Given the rapid evolution of the field of Neuroimmune Pharmacology, readers will find this book to be the most timely and authoritative reference on the subject of each of its chapters.
