Описание: Concerned citizens can drive the energy transition needed to prevent climate change by their personal choices and their identification and support of climate-sincere politicians. Jaccard explains the simplicity and modest cost of decarbonizing electricity and transportation in developed countries and spreading that critical change worldwide.
Описание: In a world of growing environmental risks and ecological scarcities, ensuring a safe Anthropocene for humankind is essential. Managing an increasingly "fragile" planet requires new thinking on markets, institutions and governance. This book offers a policy blueprint for creating a safer, sustainable and more inclusive world.
Описание: This book considers, and offers solutions to, the problems faced by local communities and the environment with respect to global mining. The author explores the idea of grievance mechanisms in the home states of the major mining conglomerates. These grievance mechanisms should be functional, pragmatic and effective at resolving disputes between mining enterprises and impacted communities.
The key to this provocative solution is twofold: the proposal harnesses the power of industry-sponsored dispute mechanisms to reduce the costs and other burdens on home state governments and judicial systems. Critically, civil society actors will be given a role as both advocates and mediators in order to achieve a fair result for those impacted abroad by extractive enterprises. Compelling, engaging and timely, this book presents an innovative approach for regulating the foreign conduct of the extractive sector.

Описание: Infrastructure that manages our water resources (such as, dams and reservoirs, irrigation systems, channels, navigation waterways, water and wastewater treatment facilities, storm drainage systems, urban water distribution and sanitation systems), are critical to all sectors of an economy. Realizing the importance of water infrastructures, efforts have already begun on understanding the sustainability and resilience of such systems under changing conditions expected in the future.
The goal of this collected work is to raise awareness among civil engineers of the various implications of landscape change and non-climate drivers on the resilience of water management infrastructure. It identifies the knowledge gaps and then provides effective and complementary approaches to assimilate knowledge discovery on local (mesoscale)-to-regional landscape drivers to improve practices on design, operations and preservation of large water infrastructure systems.

Описание: This book aims to cover most subject areas of green infrastructure such as components, multi-functionality, and integration to build environment, contribution to urban sustainability, sustainable and smart city development, urban climate change nexus, green buildings and rating systems, economic assessment, and quantification of green infrastructure. The impending climate crisis, as well as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, has highlighted the importance of green infrastructure in and around cities, prompting a call for more functional and sustainable urban planning and design. A number of recent studies have shown that green infrastructure provides a wide range of ecosystem functions and services critical to human well-being and urban sustainability, which is especially important during climatic and health crises. In this book, the authors emphasize the importance of existing green infrastructure in coping with climate change-induced stresses, such as increasing climate variability and extreme temperature and precipitation events, as well as contributing to urban dwellers' physical and mental health. Green infrastructure, in both cases, plays a significant role in providing urban areas with resilience capacity, which is critical to urban sustainability. The authors also emphasize the importance of expanding and improving green infrastructure, particularly in vulnerable areas, through integrative and participatory processes. Appropriate integration of green-gray infrastructure and development of climate resilient cities is the core theme of this publication. Further, it emphasizes sustainable development which has become an imperative requirement to the world to move fore and climate change-built environment nexus, the most critical global crisis. Though several books were published globally on the green infrastructure and urban resilience individually, books are rarely published combining both disciplines. This book identifies and addresses the gap through comprehensively discussing on both interlinked areas which is essential for the sustainable urban development. Further, it explores on urban climate resilience, urban sprawl, urbanization, resilience drivers, essentials of city resilience, policy implications, challenges, and future perspectives. This book is a useful fundamental guide in practical applications of green infrastructure in built environment in sustainability context. Further, it enlightens on the significance of transforming the conventional building construction trend to sustainable urban planning designs and building development, exploring on the strategic pathway on building urban climate resilience while signifying the importance of healthy built environment through discussing on the nexus between climate change and built environment.
Описание: With the progression of technological breakthroughs creating dependencies on telecommunications, the internet, and social networks connecting our society, CIIP (Critical Information Infrastructure Protection) has gained significant focus in order to avoid cyber attacks, cyber hazards, and a general breakdown of services.

Critical Information Infrastructure Protection and Resilience in the ICT Sector brings together a variety of empirical research on the resilience in the ICT sector and critical information infrastructure protection in the context of uncertainty and lack of data about potential threats and hazards. This book presents a variety of perspectives on computer science, economy, risk analysis, and social sciences; beneficial to academia, governments, and other organisations engaged or interested in CIIP, Resilience and Emergency Preparedness in the ICT sector.

Описание: This is the fi rst comprehensive stocktaking of what the global lowcarbon transition may mean for fossil fuel-dependent countries and how they can manage. Fossil fuel-dependent countries are the most exposed to the impacts of global low-carbon transition and, at the same time, are often unprepared to manage it. They depend on the export of oil, gas, or coal; the use of carbon-intensive infrastructure (for example, refi neries, petrochemicals, and coal power plants); or both. These countries face at least two climate-related risks. The fi rst-order risk arises from weather-related events induced by climate change. The second-order risk is fi nancial, fi scal, and macro-structural, and it arises from the potentially accelerated transition of the global economy away from carbon-intensive fuels and the value chains based on them. This book focuses on managing these transition risks and harnessing related opportunities. Beyond Stranded Assets identifi es multiple strategies that fossil fuel-dependent countries can pursue to navigate the turbulent waters of a low-carbon transition. The policy and investment choices to be made in the next decade will determine these countries' degree of exposure and overall resilience. Abandoning their comfort zones and developing completely new skills and capabilities in a time frame consistent with the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change is a daunting challenge and requires long-term revenue visibility and consistent policy leadership. This book proposes a constructive framework for climate strategies for fossil fuel-dependent countries based on new approaches to diversifi cation and international climate cooperation. Climate policy leaders share responsibility for creating room for all countries to contribute to the goals of the Paris Agreement by building on what each country is good at. ISBN 978-1-4648-1340-5
