Описание: This study offers a macro picture of the urban process under the British administration, showing how colonial capitalism shaped and imposed urban patterns in India, and contextualizing India`s urbanization in the world capitalist system of the late 19th and early 20th century.
Описание: The army in India was the principal pillar of British power in South Asia from the mid-nineteenth century until Indian independence. This volume aims to evaluate the combat effectiveness of the army in British India from the mutiny of 1857 until the British departed India in 1947. It examines how the army in India developed from a colonial police force into one of the world's largest volunteer armies which saw service around the globe. The author presents new primary material from international archival sources and develops original interpretations of the political and military role of the army in colonial India. These new arguments include: the army's conduct of ‘small wars' on the North-West frontier aided it in conducting tactical warfare in Burma during World War II; small unit raids developed in India were put to good effect beyond India's borders; the army's practical experience of counter-insurgency was used in Greece and Indonesia after 1945; and, contrary to existing scholarship, the British did not follow a deliberate policy of ‘Indianization' of the officer corps .

Описание: Jill C. Bender situates the 1857 Indian uprising within an imperial context, and traces its ramifications across the colonial sites of Ireland, New Zealand, Jamaica, and southern Africa. She shows how the uprising reshaped Britons` understandings of their relationship with the `colonized` and their own expectations of themselves as `colonizer`.

Описание: This fascinating, entertaining and often gruelling book by James Mills, examines the lunatic asylums set up by the British in nineteenth-century India. The author asserts that there was a growth in asylums following the Indian Mutiny, fuelled by the fear of itinerant and dangerous individuals, which existed primarily in the British imagination.

Описание: The British came to India as merchants in the middle of the 17th century. After gaining foothold on the coastline, they spread to every corner of the Indian peninsula. They gained political supremacy around the middle of the 18th century. After winning the Battle of Plassey in 1757 and the Battle of Buxer in 1764, they established themselves firmly as the rulers of India and ruled it till 1947 to sub-serve their economic interests. The British rule in India can be divided into two periods: (a) the rule of the East India Company from 1757 to 1858 and (b) the rule of the British Government from 1858 to 1947. The British interests in India were governed by the requirements of the Industrial Revolution which started in Britain in the middle of the 18th century and then spread to other regions of Europe. These were two-fold: (a) to secure raw materials from India for factories in Britain and (b) to ensure permanent market in India for the British manufactures. To fulfil these objectives, they adopted measures which proved disastrous for the Indian economy. This book gives a comprehensive and vivid account of various aspects of the Indian economy during the period 1857 to 1947. It is spread over 30 chapters which have been organized into 5 theme parts. Part I (chapters 1 and 2) is titled Colonial India: Background and Introduction. Apart from providing an overview of colonial India, it also explains the state of affairs of the Indian economy on the eve of Independence in 1947. Part II (chapters 3 to 5) is titled Macroeconomic Trends. It deals with discussion on national income estimates, population trends and characteristics, and occupational structure. Part III (chapters 6 to 14) is titled Agriculture, Forests, and Famines. It is devoted to description of agrarian structure and land relations, agricultural markets and institutions, agricultural credit, agricultural commerce, agricultural technology, irrigation development, productivity of agriculture, forest policy and legislations, and famines in India. Part IV (chapters 15 to 22) is titled Railways, Industry, Infrastructure, and Labour. It covers the following topics: Growth of railways, de-industrialization debate, evolution of entrepreneurship, industrial structure, industrialization in the inter-war period, constraints to industrial breakthrough, infrastructure development, and labour laws and industrial relations. Part V (chapters 23 to 30) is titled Economy and the State. It delves into imperial priorities and the Indian economy, drain of Indian wealth, international trade during British rule, capital flows in colonial India, banking and finance, insurance business, tax structure, and evolution of fiscal federalism.
Описание: This book seeks to enlighten two grey areas of industrial historiography. Although Bengal industries were globally dominant on the eve of the industrial revolution, no detailed literature is available about their later course of development. A series of questions are involved in it. Did those industries decline during the spells of British industrial revolution? If yes, what were their reasons? If not, the general curiosity is: On which merits could those industries survive against the odds of the technological revolution? A thorough discussion on these issues also clears up another area of dispute relating to the occurrence of deindustrialization in Bengal, and the validity of two competing hypotheses on it, viz. i) the mainstream hypothesis of market failures, and ii) the neo-marxian hypothesis of imperialistic state interventions

Two outstanding accounts of the Indian Mutiny written by women
This special Leonaur edition contains two accounts of the Indian Mutiny of 1857 as it was experienced by women whose lives were violently disrupted. Elizabeth Wagentreiber was the youngest daughter of Colonel James Skinner of the famous cavalry regiment 'Skinner's Horse'. She had originally married a Captain Radclyffe Haldane, an officer of Skinner's Horse who was killed at the Battle of Chillianwallah during the Second Anglo-Sikh War. She subsequently married George Wagentreiber. And in the Spring of 1857 the couple were living in the civilian lines at Delhi when the Indian Mutiny broke out in the Bengal Army and reports arrived that the native cavalry was running amok in the city, slaughtering Europeans. Fearful for their lives the couple escaped with their children and the harrowing account of their time as fugitives makes compelling reading. Mrs Elizabeth McMullin Muter was married to a captain of the 1st Battalion 60th King's Royal Rifles stationed in Meerut, a few hours travel east of Delhi, when the mutiny among the sepoys of the garrison broke out there on Sunday morning of May 10th, 1857. Elizabeth Muter graphically describes the horrors of those first days of the conflict from the perspective of the wives of officers who were set adrift in times of peril and uncertainty as their husbands left them to fight. This book also contains some campaign recollections by Captain Muter.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
