Описание:
Communicative Civic-ness explores how political culture shapes social media interactions in civic participation, arguing that social media usage is informed by context-specific civil and political culture.
Drawing on cutting-edge research, the book develops a new robust theoretical and conceptual framework on civic engagement and participation, comprising:
contextual ethos of civic communication;
political culture and civic communication;
use of social media in private and public spheres;
design of social media.
It critically addresses issues within the concept of political culture and develops the concept of 'communicative civic-ness'. This concept seeks to aid a better-informed debate about the capacity of social media to support the pluralistic discussions that underpin deliberative democratic processes.
This book appeals to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as academics with an interest in areas including (but not limited to) sociology, political science and media studies. It will also provide useful information and understanding to third sector organisations and policy-makers regarding forms of civic participation.

Описание: Communicative Cities and Urban Space addresses major changes occurring across both cities and communication studies. It seeks to understand the situatedness of contemporary communication practices in diverse contexts of urban life, and to explore digitized urban space as an historically specific communicative environment.
Описание: This book explores the increasing imperatives to speak up, to speak out, and to `find one`s voice` in contemporary media culture. It critiques the optimistic claims about the `unleashing` of women`s voices post-#MeToo and examines the ways that women`s speech continues to be trivialized and devalued.

Описание: This volume advocates a shift from the social constructivism of Luckmann and Berger to a communicative constructivism that acknowledges communication as a form of action in its own right, which constructs a social reality that guides, delimits and enables actions.

Описание: Based on a 12-year long project, this book demonstrates the contested character of the communicative construction of Europe. It does so by combining an investigation of journalistic practices with content analysis of print media, an examination of citizens` online interactions and audience studies with European citizens.
Описание: The internet has changed the way we communicate and so changed society and culture. Internet, Society, and Culture offers an understanding of this change by examining two case studies of pre and post internet communication. The first case study is of letters sent to and from Australia in 1835-1858 and the second is a study of online gaming. In both case studies, the focus is on the ways communication is created. The result is the definition of two types of communication that are lived simultaneously in the twenty-first century. One type of communication is from before the internet and relies on the body having touched and created a message-for example, by attaching signature-to stabilise the nature of sender, message and receiver. Internet-dependant communication is different because no identity-marker can be trusted on the internet and so individuals' styles of communicating are used to stabilise the transmission of messages. Being after the internet means having to live these two contradictory forms of communication.
Описание: Through a variety of empirical studies, this volume offers fresh insights into the means by which communicative action brings about the social construction and re-construction of urban spaces, presenting new theoretical foundations for conceptualising these transformations.
Описание: Offers a systematic reconstruction of the theoretical foundations and framework of critical social theory.

Описание: Today, the world is facing climate change, wealth inequality, housing crises, food shortages, mass migration, and now a global health pandemic. Cities are at the heart of both these problems and their solutions. Urban communication scholars are well-poised to examine the change initiatives that are both caused and inspired by such complex problems. This volume provides a collection of urban communication research focused on how examining change through the lens of communication provides unique processual understandings of cities as dynamic sites formed through the interplay between concrete cases and conceptual ideas. The first section, Change through Institutional Intervention, addresses how diverse societal institutions—including policy, regulation, planning, and voluntary arts—interplay with changes in our urban communities. The second section, Change in Place and through Space, explores various ways in which spaces and places are able to transform through communicative practice, specifically focusing on how space and place provide unique frames for communicating change and influencing interaction in cities. The third section, Change through Participation and Engagement, collectively draws attention to the ways that public participation and engagement are utilized in cities in ways that enhance the communication both within and about them, focusing specifically on how this happens globally in teaching and learning environments, community planning partnerships, industrial site redevelopment projects, and approaches to food sovereignty in urban agricultural initiatives.
