Описание: Exploring the professional and political ideas of Newfoundland naval governors during the French Wars, this book traces the evolution of the Naval Governorship and administration of the region, shedding a light on a critical period of its early modern history. Contextualising Newfoundland as part of Britain’s broader Atlantic Empire, Morrow focuses on the years 1793-1815 as it transitioned from a largely migratory fishery and ‘nursery of seaman’ to a colonial settlement with a resident British and Irish population. With a diversifying economy and growing demography amidst the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the governors of Newfoundland faced a unique set of challenges. Drawing upon various primary and secondary sources, Morrow provides a comprehensive account of their responses to the perceived needs of those they governed - both settler and indigenous - and reveals the professional attitudes and attributes they brought to bear on both their civil and military responsibilities.
Описание: Why have the struggles of the African Diaspora so resonated with South Pacific people? How have Maori, Pasifika and Pakeha activists incorporated the ideologies of the African diaspora into their struggle against colonial rule and racism, and their pursuit of social justice? This book challenges predominant understandings of the historical linkages that make up the (post-)colonial world. The author goes beyond both the domination of the Atlantic viewpoint, and the correctives now being offered by South Pacific and Indian Ocean studies, to look at how the Atlantic ecumene is refracted in and has influenced the Pacific ecumene. The book is empirically rich, using extensive interviews, participation and archival work and focusing on the politics of Black Power and the Rastafari faith. It is also theoretically sophisticated, offering an innovative hermeneutical critique of post-colonial and subaltern studies. The Black Pacific is essential reading for students and scholars of Politics, International Relations, History and Anthropology interested in anti-colonial struggles, anti-racism and the quests for equality, justice, freedom and self-determination.

Описание: On January 1, 1804, Haiti shocked the world by declaring independence. Historians have long portrayed Haiti's postrevolutionary period as one during which the international community rejected Haiti's Declaration of Independence and adopted a policy of isolation designed to contain the impact of the world's only successful slave revolution. Julia Gaffield, however, anchors a fresh vision of Haiti's first tentative years of independence to its relationships with other nations and empires and reveals the surprising limits of the country's supposed isolation.Gaffield frames Haitian independence as both a practical and an intellectual challenge to powerful ideologies of racial hierarchy and slavery, national sovereignty, and trade practice. Yet that very independence offered a new arena in which imperial powers competed for advantages with respect to military strategy, economic expansion, and international law. In dealing with such concerns, foreign governments, merchants, abolitionists, and others provided openings that were seized by early Haitian leaders who were eager to negotiate new economic and political relationships. Although full political acceptance was slow to come, economic recognition was extended by degrees to Haiti - and this had diplomatic implications. Gaffield's account of Haitian history highlights how this layered recognition sustained Haitian independence.

Описание: This book moves away from the focus on high diplomacy which has long marked the history of the “Third Worldism” of the Cold War era. The so-called “Bandung Moment” has tracked the leaders of the decolonizing world from the conference halls of Bandung and Belgrade, to those of the United Nations and beyond. This book seeks to place the spotlight on lesser-known gatherings. It highlights exchanges within the Afro-Asian world that speak to a broader participation in the “Bandung moment”: the participation of activists, intellectuals, cultural figures, and political leaders. This collection thus disrupts hard divisions between state and non-state spaces, as well as between Cold War blocs. Framing the early Cold War as an era of relatively open international exchange, this collection takes these “blurry lines” as a departure point. Using concrete case studies, it engages the fact that in many Cold War era gatherings, one delegation might consist of government officials, while another delegation might be comprised entirely of activists, dissenters, or outright exiles. These gatherings are further contextualized by chapters highlighting both the intellectual and material underpinnings of these Afro-Asian exchanges, bringing into full view the changing social dynamics of Cold War era internationalism in the Afro-Asian world. From the genealogy of ideas used to strengthen Afro-Asian solidarity to the political economy of institutional finance and Cold War patronage, this book tells an interconnected set of stories of cultural and intellectual traffic in the post-colonial era.

Описание: The fall of the Spanish Empire: that period in the nineteenth century when it lost its colonies in Spanish America and the Philippines. How did it happen? What did the process of the ""end of empire"" look like? Empire's End considers the nation's imperial legacy beyond this period, all the way up to the present moment. In addition to scrutinizing the political, economic, and social implications of this ""end,"" these chapters emphasize the cultural impact of this process through an analysis of a wide range of representations - literature, literary histories, periodical publications, scientific texts, national symbols, museums, architectural monuments, and tourist routes - that formed the basis of transnational connections and exchange. The book breaks new ground by addressing the ramifications of Spain's imperial project in relation to its former colonies, not only in Spanish America, but also in North Africa and the Philippines, thus generating new insights into the circuits of cultural exchange that link these four geographical areas that are rarely considered together.Empire's End showcases the work of scholars of literature, cultural studies, and history, centering on four interrelated issues crucial to understanding the end of the Spanish empire: the mappings of the Hispanic Atlantic, race, human rights, and the legacies of empire.

Описание: This new edition of a previous bestseller gives you practical techniques for optimizing RF and microwave circuits for applications in radar systems design, with an emphasis on current and emerging technologies. Completely updated with new material, the book shows you how to design RF components for radar systems and how to choose appropriate materials and packaging methods. It takes you through classic techniques, to the state of the art, and finally to emerging technologies. You will learn:How to design high-frequency circuits for use in radar applications; How to integrate components while avoiding higher-level assembly issues and troubleshooting problems on the measurement bench; How to properly simulate, build, assemble, and test high-frequency circuits; How to debug issues with hardware on the bench; How to connect microwave theory to practical circuit design. Theory and practical information are provided while addressing topics ranging from heat removal to digital circuit integration. The book serves as a teaching aid for classic techniques that are still relevant today. It also demonstrates how these techniques are serving as the foundation for technologies to come. You will be equipped to consider future needs and emerging enabling technologies and confidently think (and design) outside the box to ensure future needs are met. The book also shows you how to incorporate modern design techniques often overlooked or underused, and will help you to better understand the capabilities and limitations of today`s technology and the emerging technologies that are on the horizon to mitigate those limitations. This is a must-have resource for system-level radar designers who want to up their game in RF/microwave component design. It is also a great tool for RF/microwave engineers tasked or interested in designing components for radar systems. Students and new designers of radar components will also benefit and be well prepared to start designing immediately.
Описание: The settlement of Versailles was more than a failed peace. What was debated at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919–1920 hugely influenced how nations and empires, sovereignty, and the international order were understood after the Great War—and into the present. Beyond Versailles argues thatthis transformation of ideas was not the work of the treaty makers alone, but emerged in interaction with nationalist groups, anti-colonial movements, and regional elites who took up the rhetoric of Paris and made it their own. In shifting the spotlight from the palace of Versailles to the peripheries of Europe, Beyond Versailles turns to the treaties' resonance on the ground and shows why the principles of the peace settlement meant different things in different locales. It was in places a long way from Paris—in Polish borderlands and in Portuguese colonies, in contested spaces like Silesia, Teschen and Danzig, and in states emerging from imperial collapse like Austria, Egypt, and Iran—that notions of nation and sovereignty, legitimacy, and citizenship were negotiated and contested.
