Описание: The full, boots-on-the-ground story of the Falklands War, from a soldier at the heart of the action, published for the 40th anniversary of the conflict.
From the first "commando carriers" to the legendary Fearless class and the current generation, this title explores the capabilities, roles, and history of the Royal Navy's frontline amphibious assault ships.
Amphibious assault ships have been at the center of nearly all of Britain's expeditionary campaigns since World War II, from the Suez crisis of 1956 to operations as far afield as Borneo (1963-66), the Falklands (1982), Sierra Leone (2000) and Iraq (2003).
In major operations such as Suez and the Falklands, the use of amphibious assault ships was essential to the military success of the campaigns. The Suez Crisis saw two of the Royal Navy's former light fleet carriers converted into "commando carriers" to specialize in amphibious warfare. In the 1960s these were followed by the famous Fearless class ships - the first purpose-built amphibious assault ships in the Royal Navy. With an internal dock, headquarters capability, and multiple landing craft, these "Landing Platform Docks" were built to project power around the world. When the Falklands were invaded, HMS Fearless was the key to the successful landing in San Carlos.
In the 1990s, a new generation was ordered: the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean and the Albion class LPDs. In recent years Ocean, Albion and Bulwark have been the largest fighting ships of the Royal Navy and have acted as the navy's flagships, as well as being perhaps the most versatile ships in the navy.
This title is an essential guide to British Amphibious Assault Ships across the decades, from the mighty Fearlessto the modern Albion. Packed with full-color illustrations, contemporary photography, and detailed analysis, this definitive work explores the history, development, and deployment of the Royal Navy's front line.

Описание:
The tales of war are best told by those who have fought in the battles, endured the elements, suffered through pain, and nurtured camaraderie with their brothers in peril.
THE FALKLANDS WAR: From Defeat to Victory is an amazing story told by one of the Royal Marines who was there.
See things at ground zero from under the helmet of John Alden as he describes this historic event. He was in the first battle that began at Government House. The British military was captured and forced to surrender.
As the world read the papers, the front page showed the infamous photo of John and his brothers in arms standing with their hands up as the Argentine soldiers ridiculed and belittled them.
This dark day in British history did not go unanswered when, days after, they sent more troops. Ultimately, John Alden and his fellow Royal Marines ended back at Government House ten weeks later. Only, this time, they flew the British flag in final victory.
This soldier also shares personal anecdotes of his hometown and does an amazing job of describing life in a small English village.
Hear the story like it has never been told before with nothing censored or sugarcoated. Some might argue it is the best account of the Falklands War to date.
In 1982, the average Briton didn't know the Falkland Islands existed, let alone their status as a disputed British territory just off the coast of Argentina. That changed when the Argentinians invaded the islands and overwhelmed the small defending force. Both nations claimed the islands were theirs, but now Argentina thought the British would give them up without a fight.
They were wrong.
Britain sent a task force into the South Atlantic to re-take the islands, and the short, intense war that followed was--in the words of Major-General Sir John Jeremy Moore--"a damn close-run thing."
This short history sums up the events leading up to the war and its major military actions including details of an Argentinian plan to sink a Royal Navy ship in Gibraltar harbour (foiled at the last minute by Spanish police) and an audacious British plan to land SAS soldiers in Argentina to destroy Exocet-carrying aircraft while they were still on the ground.
