Описание: Croatia is today popularly known as a beautiful country, with an excellent soccer team, but the rest of its long history is still not well known outside scholarly circles. It is less known for example that Croatia started as an ancient kingdom established in the 7th century. It lost its independence in the 11th century and had a troubled history until the first democratic elections in 1990 and independence in 1991. Since the Great Schism in the 11th century, Croatia has been the easternmost country of the Catholic West facing the Orthodox East. Attacked by the Ottoman Turks in the 15th century, it has been called ever since Antemurale Christianitatis (The Bulwark of Christianity). Croatia went through difficult times during the two World Wars and in the inter-war and the post-war periods until it won its independence and later gained membership to the European Union in 2013. This book reveals important information about its history, the struggles it endured to gain independence, the key problems of post-communist social and economic transition, and prospects for the future, summarized at the end as an analysis of its strengths and weaknesses, as well as its external threats and opportunities. The book is divided into two parts, "Croatian History Timeline" and "Past in Present and Future", because the Croatian past informs its present and future in a profound way. There are few sources in English that present so many until-now unknown aspects of this European country as does this book. It may be said that it is the first reliable and objective guide to give essential understanding of the Republic of Croatia published so far in the English language.
Описание: Tania Romanov hangs from the final limb of a family tree of generations of exiles and displaced people. Perhaps that`s why she herself can`t stop traveling. From her past in Croatia and Russia, to finding a son in Bhutan, to befriending women in Africa, in "Never a Stranger," Tania shares her stories of travel, connection, and self-discovery.
This book focuses on the events that took place in late 1944 and 1945 in Croatia and Slovenia when the intensity of violence was strongest. At that time, the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ), assisted by the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, the Yugoslav Army, the Department for the Protection of the People (OZNA) and the Corps of People's Defence of Yugoslavia (KNOJ) conducted organized terror not only by intimidation, persecution, torture and imprisonment, but also by the execution of a large number of citizens perceived by the KPJ as disloyal, passive, ideological enemies or class enemies. However, investigating war and post-war crimes committed by communist regime was not possible until 1990, after the democratic changes in Yugoslavia. This book is based on documents kept in the archives of Croatia, Slovenia, the UK, and Serbia. Many of them, especially those in Croatia, recently became available to the public, which makes them extremely valuable source of data to the academics and students in this field and which shed new light on these historical events.
The Communist Party in the former Yugoslavia was an organization which used all available means to seize and keep power, including terror and mass murder, especially between autumn 1944 and summer 1945 when mass killings occurred across the country. However, in the Soviet sphere of influence, investigating war and post-war crimes committed by communist regimes was not possible until 1990. This project not only covers new ground in the research into communist war crimes at the end of and after the Second World War, but also contributes to coming to terms with the past in the successor states of Yugoslavia by studying one of the most controversial episodes in the contemporary history of the Balkans.
Since the October Revolution, when for the first time in history a Marxist party seized state power, communist regimes have influenced the lives of more than a billion people, caused millions of deaths and violated the human rights of countless people. However, in the Soviet sphere of influence and in Yugoslavia, investigating war and post-war crimes committed by communist regimes was not possible until 1990, after the democratic changes in Eastern Europe. Resolution 1481/2006 of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly strongly condemned human rights violations committed by totalitarian communist regimes and the 2008 Prague Declaration on European Conscience and Communism stated that these crimes were comparable with Nazi crimes but, very few people have been tried for committing such crimes. Nevertheless, 25 years later, in former Yugoslav republics this topic is still a matter of political and scientific debates.

Описание: "Bozo Skoko has written a book that only a Croat could write, but one that everyone interested in Croatia today should read. He is searingly honest, while determinedly fair-minded, about what is right and wrong in this young state with such unfulfilled potential. He describes what is unique, and often maliciously distorted, in Croatia's historic identity. He examines what is self-destructive and difficult, though also lovable and admirable, in the outlook of its people. Not least, he exposes what is deplorable and inexcusable about the failure of the governing elite to live up to their responsibilities. I hope it may make some of them lose sleep, but I wouldn't bet on it."Robin Harris, author and historian
This vibrant and illustrated selection of Croatian myths and heroic folk tales offers stunning glimpses into a centuries-old culture.
The familiar themes of the fairy tale - the gallant hero, fearsome beast, and damsel-in-distress - were popular with the storytellers of Croatia of old. What makes these stories so interesting is the local variations of familiar narratives; the maritime culture of Croatia is reflected in the story of Fisherman Plunk, whose poverty motivates him to seek adventure. Many of the mystical creatures described are peculiar to the Croatian culture, with dialogue between humans and creatures of the wilderness plus poetic verses giving each story a distinctive tone.
Croatia's folklore is understood to be a local variation on the wider grouping of Slavic myths. Exotic and unfamiliar to Western readers, the stories are made vivid by the illustrations of Vladimir Kirin, whose unique style brings the creatures and scenes of the stories alive. The translator F. S. Copeland sought to preserve the accuracy and uniqueness of Croatia's folklore, and appends at the conclusion a series of interpretive notes so readers can better understand the stories and the names of the characters.
