Sonic Intimacy thus explores what is at stake in the development of sonic intimacy for human relations and alternative black and anti-capitalist public politics. This discussion on the transformation of sonic intimacy starts with the sound system. The sound system highlights the affective and political implications of in-time: collective and bass mediated intimacies. Pirate radio permits an exploration of the initial privatization of this intimacy, as bass is scooped out and dialogues established between bedrooms, and over radio infrastructure. An analysis of the YouTube music video then provides insight into sonic intimacy’s further fragmentation as alternative sound waves are commodified, speakers shrunk, distances increased and human relations made out-of-sync. More importantly, however, these case studies also provide the book with latitude for exploring how old intimacies have been retraced and where new intimacies have arisen: the aimless fervour generated through the pirate radio; the immediacy, uncertainty, deferral, multiplication, repetition and mobility of the YouTube music video. Ultimately, Sonic Intimacy outlines the importance of sonic intimacy as an area of study, argues that changes in sonic intimacy are contingent with the shrinking possibilities of alternative public culture, and tentatively identifies potential new sonic intimacies that may provide a resource for the struggle against, and demand beyond, neoliberal capitalism.

Purists and Peripherals examines audience engagement with two cultural forms, hip-hop and grime. The book initially addresses the continued academic validity of the term subculture in light of recent moves to realign cultural studies to an understanding of youth cultural engagement as fragmented and increasingly transient. Through a combination of academic analysis and engagement in the field, it is argued that different aspects of subcultural theory, from seemingly competing paradigms, can help explore and understand the varied behaviours, attitudes and values of young people engaged with this music. Emphasising activity on a continuum, the purist and the peripheral model developed in this book allows a more nuanced appreciation of subcultural affiliation to develop. For years, rap music and more recently grime, have been demonised by some elements of the mainstream media and the messages inherent in texts, along with the responses of audiences, has been largely viewed as problematic. Research in the field of hip-hop studies has traditionally tended to favour academic dissection over the opinions of those actively engaged in the music and associated cultural forms. This book seeks to address these imbalances through an engagement with the opinions and values of members of five research groups in the South East of England. The research is based on ethnography and focus group interviews addressing areas relating to audience interpretation of hip-hop and grime music. Through an exploration of issues such as representation of gender, ethnicity and the cultural use of the term 'authenticity', Purists and Peripherals seeks to examine these variant musical forms whilst privileging the voices of those who live and breathe this music.

This book moves beyond accounts of Hip-Hop’s marginality and shows, with an examination of the production, dissemination and use of rap in London, how this cultural form plays an important role in the everyday lives of young Londoners and the formation of identities. Through in-depth interviews with a range of leading and emerging rap artists, close analysis of rap music tracks, and over two years of ethnographic research of London’s UK Hip-Hop and Grime scenes, Bramwell examines how black and white urban youths use rap to come together to explore their creative abilities. By combining these methodological approaches in the development of a critical participant observation, the book reveals how the collaborative work of these urban youths produced these politically significant subcultures, through which they resist unfair and illegitimate policing practices and attempt to develop their economic autonomy in a city marred by immense social and economic inequalities.
