Описание: This book provides key empirical findings from a study measuring the degree of perceived victimization and/or actual attack experienced by a sample of minority adolescents in an urban setting. The project uses a systematic sociological approach to examine the effects of violence on these adolescents by including measures of adjustment outcomes resulting from the stress experienced in these harsh environments. Central to the analysis is the discovery of the linkages between risk factors relating to peer-, community-, and school-level victimization and patterns of coping among youth. To further develop the study, the project determines the perceived level of fear and exposure to violence among urban youth, followed by investigations of variations in adjustment outcomes (i.e., delinquency, anxiety, depression, academic achievement, self-esteem) as they relate to dimensions of violence. Finally, the study focuses on the extent to which coping strategies moderate risk factors among minority adolescents across levels of adjustment outcomes. While the significance of this work is the determination of the relationships between victimization, adjustment outcomes, and coping strategies in urba, minority adolescents in environments at higher risk for violence, the greatest implication of this research is to provide an understanding of the role of particular risk factors and coping strategies used to explain differences in delinquent and anti-social behavior among socially vulnerable youth, many of whom are victimized, and influenced, by delinquent peers. These understandings will provide an empirical basis on which to dismantle structural inequality, develop mental health interventions, reinforce societal- and community-level change, and promote coping behaviors to offset the detrimental impact of violence on the lives of marginalized youth in many communities. Youth victimization and violence are not solely public health problems, but remain severe health disparities, as many neighborhoods and families plagued with elevated violence and systemic poverty need further support to help youth flourish.

Описание: As the digital world assumes an ever-increasing role in the daily lives of the public, opportunities to engage in crimes increase as well. The prevention of cyber aggression is an ongoing challenge due to its multifaceted nature and the difficulties in realizing effective interventions. The consequences of cyber aggression can range from emotional and psychological distress to death by suicide or homicide. Enduring prevention programs need to be defined and take into consideration that the digital revolution changes the way and the meaning of interpersonal relationships. Developing Safer Online Environments for Children: Tools and Policies for Combatting Cyber Aggression explores the effects of cyberbullying and cyberstalking on children and examines solutions that can identify and prevent online harassment through both policy and legislation reform and technological tools. Highlighting a range of topics such as cyberbullying, fake profile identification, and victimization, this publication is an ideal reference source for policymakers, educators, principals, school counsellors, therapists, government officials, politicians, lawmakers, academicians, administrators, and researchers.

Описание: Bullying in schools has become the focus of a growing body of literature; however, much of that work diminishes the role of social context, social identities, and prejudices despite extensive research evidence suggesting that many victims of bullying are targeted because of an aspect of their social identity. This book demonstrates how the prevention and intervention of this phenomenon, termed identity-based bullying, is a social justice issue. Expanding beyond bullying prevention that focuses on individual perpetrators, the book examines identity-based bullying in schools as a microcosm of larger systemic tensions and conflicts. The author utilizes a social constructivist perspective to understand the experiences of children as active agents in their own lives. She also provides an international framework to describe the impact of culture, social structures, and politics from the US and the UK. Challenges and barriers to addressing identity-based bullying are explored and recommendations are made for best practices for teachers, administrators, and mental health professionals to prevent and respond to identity-based bullying.

Описание: This book introduces a candid and open discussion on a sensitive topic. Breaking the "code of silence" on bullying and harassment (including sexual harassment) in academia and the glocal workplace is the central focus of the book. The author advocates a call to action to hold perpetrators and the executive leadership teams of higher education institutions and corporate organisations accountable and responsible for bullying and harassment behaviours in the glocal (local and global) workplace. The book aims to raise the bar for ethical considerations in working with employees who may be vulnerable in the glocal workplace; to call out the perpetrators of bullying and harassment in the glocal workplace and academia; to ensure that the mental wellbeing of employees is a priority; to place responsibility and accountability for bullying and harassment on the shoulders of the executive leadership of international higher education institutions and corporations; and to call upon stakeholder groups to shatter the "code of silence" with a you-too-bully-harasser movement. Employers are expected to enhance their vigilance on the matter of bullying and harassment and to report perpetrators through a national and international monitoring system which names the perpetrators and prevents them from causing harm in their current organisation and from moving surreptitiously to other workplace communities. This book is an account of bullying and harassment in academia and other workplaces written by those who experienced and/or witnessed bullying and harassment. It includes chapters on the political economic factors influencing equity, diversity and inclusion agendas over decades; the impact of bullying and harassment in the COVID-19 period when various communities are vulnerable; and critically reviews and presents real-life scenarios in academia and the glocal workplace which are both covert and overt. However, these underhanded activities, often with the knowledge and approval of executive leadership, remain unchallenged by employees and stakeholder groups because of the threat of loss of ones livelihood. The contributors bring valuable insights into the covert operations of the perpetrators, who are sometimes the executive leaders (women and men) themselves. This book is essential for understanding the dark web of deceit, lies, conspiracies and mobbing cultures which ensnares innocent targets, across glocal organisational contexts. Profiles and descriptors within the chapters and case studies act as alert signals to identify bullies. The contributors bring personal, creative and academic perspectives together, offering the readership sobering and authentic accounts of traumatic experiences and challenges in the glocal workplace.

Описание: Bullying: A Neuroscience Perspective blends research in neuropsychology, sexual harassment, and violence to examine the developmental, psychological, and social roots of bullying, and how understanding cognitive function is essential in the creation of successful programs to combat it.The book begins by discussing definitional issues, the bullying spectrum, and bullying's prevalence. Other topics include qualitative and quantitative research on specific programs, particularly data on ecological validity and effectiveness, and the role of school climate and social support in obtaining positive results from anti-bullying programs.Bullying: A Neuroscience Perspective addresses bullying as it impacts learners of all ages, from preschool to adulthood. It incorporates up-to-date research to not only explore problems but posit solutions. Written for education professionals seeking to develop anti-bullying programs, the book can also be used in upper-division courses in psychology, social work, and education.
