Описание:
Children are significant consumers of services such as health, welfare, educational institutions and the environment. Alongside this, the marketization of childhood means that children are exposed to advertising and marketing through a wide range of media on a daily basis.
Examining key debates on children s power, status and citizenship issues, it considers the wider implications of how consumerism impacts on children s health, well-being and life chances. This timely book explores childhood and consumerism through four key strands:
children as consumers of services;
children as consumers of space;
the link between citizenship and consumption;
the influences of the marketization of childhood.
"
Children and Consumerism in Contemporary Society "will be essential reading for students, researchers, practitioners and policy makers who are interested in the topic of consumerism across early childhood, childhood, youth and society."

Описание: The subject of this book is young children’s emotional-social learning and development within early childhood care and education settings in Aotearoa-New Zealand. The focus on emotional complexity fills a gap in early childhood care and education research where young children are frequently framed narrowly as ‘learners,’ ignoring the importance of emotional functioning and the feelings with which children make sense of themselves and the world. This book draws on original data in the form of narrative-like framed events to creatively illustrate the complexities in children’s diverse ways of feeling, thinking, playing, being, and becoming. Events illuminate the feelings and meanings of observed experiences in holistic and contextualised gestalts. Awareness of unconscious processes, the feeling of feelings, and cultural dimensions of development and meaning-making are addressed. The book emphasises the emergent and psychodynamic nature of children’s development and learning with strong links to the role of play and playfulness in the events, drawing on two ethnographically inspired research projects that present theory, experience and practice in real-life events.

Описание: Jesus commanded that we should come to him as little children -- filled with wonder, bold with questions, pure in faith. Let the Children Come and Worship: Little Liturgies for Young Christians is a wonderful resource for Sunday school teachers, parents, youth leaders, children's ministers, pastors, and children to find a worship service, scripture, song references, lessons, skits, and stories helping children worship and praise God. In this collection of twelve liturgies, Judy Gattis Smith not only invites the young worshiper into a deeper faith with Jesus, but she also reminds the seasoned worshiper that praise and adoration should be pure and expectant. Each page reminds us that the idea of entering into worship shouldn't be reserved for adulthood; rather, worship is an innate desire given to us by our Creator. Sunday school teachers, parents, youth leaders, children's ministers, pastors, and children will all discover that the simple truths within these liturgies reach far beyond childhood, calling us all back to a pure worship that celebrates the gift of a Savior. Judy Gattis Smith and her husband, a retired Methodist minister, live in Midlothian, Virginia. They have two adult children and four granddaughters.
Описание: In China, despite the introduction of economic reforms that have lifted millions out of poverty, the income gap between rural and urban areas remains wide. There is a growing realization in policy circles that economic growth alone cannot reduce absolute poverty and inequality, and that investment in human development is needed to sustain growth and improve social cohesion. Prepared as a collaborative study between the World Bank and China’s National Population and Family Planning Commission, Early Child Development in China: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Improving Future Competitiveness analyzes the challenges facing the country in the care, development, and education for children from birth to six years of age, and details the long-term social benefits and high economic returns that targeted early child development interventions for disadvantaged children can provide.Investments in early child development are one of the most cost effective strategies for breaking the intergenerational transmission of poverty and improving productivity and social cohesion in the long run. This report studies how programs to improve prenatal care, raise the health status and nutritional standards of young children, improve the knowledge of mothers and primary caregivers about health, child care, and nurturing techniques, and expand the availability of preprimary education services across China can strengthen a child’s prospects for success later in life. Ensuring that children can grow and live to their full potential is essential to enable the country to improve its future competitiveness and overcome the challenges it faces from an ageing population and the transition from a middle- to a high-income economy.

Описание: This book is an ethnography of teachers and children in grades 1 and 2, and presents arguments about why we should take gender and childhood sexuality seriously in the early years of South African primary schooling. Taking issue with dominant discourses which assumes children’s lack of agency, the book questions the epistemological foundations of childhood discourses that produce innocence. It examines the paradox between teachers’ dominant narratives of childhood innocence and children’s own conceptualisation of gender and sexuality inside the classroom, with peers, in heterosexual games, in the playground and through boyfriend-girlfriend relationships. It examines the nuances and finely situated experiences which draw attention to hegemonic masculinity and femininity where boys and girls challenge and contest relations of power. The book focuses on the early makings of gender and sexual harassment and shows how violent gender relations are manifest even amongst very young boys and girls. Attention is given to the interconnections with race, class, structural inequalities, as well as the actions of boys and girls as navigate gender and sexuality at school. The book argues that the early years of primary schooling are a key site for the production and reproduction of gender and sexuality. Gender reform strategies are vital in this sector of schooling.
