Описание: The psychologist who worked with a famous amnesiac patient for fifty years explains what his studies show about how memory functions and ways to keep the brain sharp.

Remembering is about an ordinary man who became famous by devoting his life to helping scientists understand his memory, mind, and brain, trusting in the promise that what they learned about him would "help others." His name was Henry Moliason, but until recently, the general public knew him only as H.M. At age twenty-seven, Henry underwent brain surgery to remedy life-threatening epilepsy. This operation inadvertently destroyed his hippocampus, the engine in the brain for forming new memories. Henry suffered catastrophic memory failures for the rest of his life and he became the most studied amnesia patient in the history of the world.

Dr. MacKay worked with Henry for fifty years. His research shows how to keep memories sharp at any age and how to offset the degradation that aging and infrequent use inflict on memory. His studies also reveal the profound importance of memory: Memory decline impacts everything that makes a normal human mind and brain worth having: creative expression, artistic endeavors, awareness, the ability to plan, to comprehend, to detect and correct errors, to appreciate humor, to imagine hypothetical situations, and to perceive novelty in the world. Remembering summarizes other results of the revolution in scientific understanding of mind and memory that began with Henry. Importantly, however, it makes good on the promise that research with Henry would "help others." Its primary focus is what readers wishing to maintain the everyday functioning of memory, mind, and brain (their own or others') can learn from the still ongoing revolution that Henry inspired.

Written in an accessible style, this engaging story combines insights into Henry's personal psychology with important new findings about memory and the brain.

Описание:

Proposes computational models of human memory and learning using a brain-computer interfacing (BCI) approach

Human memory modeling is important from two perspectives. First, the precise fitting of the model to an individual's short-term or working memory may help in predicting memory performance of the subject in future. Second, memory models provide a biological insight to the encoding and recall mechanisms undertaken by the neurons present in active brain lobes, participating in the memorization process. This book models human memory from a cognitive standpoint by utilizing brain activations acquired from the cortex by electroencephalographic (EEG) and functional near-infrared-spectroscopic (f-NIRs) means.

Cognitive Modeling of Human Memory and Learning A Non-invasive Brain-Computer Interfacing Approach begins with an overview of the early models of memory. The authors then propose a simplistic model of Working Memory (WM) built with fuzzy Hebbian learning. A second perspective of memory models is concerned with Short-Term Memory (STM)-modeling in the context of 2-dimensional object-shape reconstruction from visually examined memorized instances. A third model assesses the subjective motor learning skill in driving from erroneous motor actions. Other models introduce a novel strategy of designing a two-layered deep Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) classifier network and also deal with cognitive load assessment in motor learning tasks associated with driving. The book ends with concluding remarks based on principles and experimental results acquired in previous chapters.

Examines the scope of computational models of memory and learning with special emphasis on classification of memory tasks by deep learning-based models Proposes two algorithms of type-2 fuzzy reasoning: Interval Type-2 fuzzy reasoning (IT2FR) and General Type-2 Fuzzy Sets (GT2FS) Considers three classes of cognitive loads in the motor learning tasks for driving learners

Cognitive Modeling of Human Memory and Learning A Non-invasive Brain-Computer Interfacing Approach will appeal to researchers in cognitive neuro-science and human/brain-computer interfaces. It is also beneficial to graduate students of computer science/electrical/electronic engineering.

Описание: Venturing out of the laboratory into the wild, it becomes untenable to locate memory strictly in the head. Instead, memory appears as a materially extended and socially distributed process, embedded within culture and history. This book explores the relations between practices of remembering and the settings in which they are enacted.

Centered mind

Описание: Peter Carruthers challenges the central assumptions of many philosophers on reflective thinking and consciousness. He draws on extensive knowledge of the scientific literature on working memory to argue that non-sensory propositional attitudes (such as beliefs, goals, and decisions) are never conscious, and never under direct intentional control.

Описание:

A mental model is the representation of a human mind's thought process. Everything that a person sees is represented as models inside their minds. The mental models are considered as an internal scale for a human being for evaluation and for taking decisions. The Internal scales, as mentioned by the scientists, are ever changing and unstable as a human mind is susceptible to change due to adaptation. Even going through a change, a human being must be able to evaluate and understand the consequences and results of change. The mental model provides grounds for reasoning. The models that are made out of a person's perception and imagination, which can influence thinking than coming down to a logical conclusion. Out of all the possible assumptions, the mental model represents only the most relevant and true one. The contrary occurs when there is an alternative to reality.

What you will learn in this book:

- Changing Mental Models for Instructors

- Mental Models: The Box Everyone Is Trying to Think Outside of

- For Great Ventures - The New Mental Model For Post-Recession Success

- Sales Leadership - Building a Shared Mental Model

- Strategy Execution: 2 Tips to Improve Decision Making

- How to Improve Your Decision Making Skills

- Logic Analyzer - Nothing Else Works Like It

- The Problem of Problem Solving

Mental models have been utilized for studying human-computer interaction (HCI), where the mental models are being used to make sense of the complexities that are around the people using computers. When people use computers, they build mental models following the interaction with the system.
