Описание:
Police officers, armed security guards, surveillance cameras, and metal detectors are common features of the disturbing new landscape at many of today’s high schools. You will also find new and harsher disciplinary practices: zero-tolerance policies, random searches with drug-sniffing dogs, and mandatory suspensions, expulsions, and arrests, despite the fact that school crime and violence have been decreasing nationally for the past two decades. While most educators, students, and parents accept these harsh policing and punishment strategies based on the assumption that they keep children safe, Aaron Kupchik argues that we need to think more carefully about how we protect and punish students. In Homeroom Security, Kupchik shows that these policies lead schools to prioritize the rules instead of students, so that students’ real problems—often the very reasons for their misbehavior—get ignored. Based on years of impressive field research, Kupchik demonstrates that the policies we have zealously adopted in schools across the country are the opposite of the strategies that are known to successfully reduce student misbehavior and violence. As a result, contemporary school discipline is often unhelpful, and can be hurtful to students in ways likely to make schools more violent places. Furthermore, those students who are most at-risk of problems in schools and dropping out are the ones who are most affected by these counterproductive policies. Our schools and our students can and should be safe, and Homeroom Security offers real strategies for making them so.

Описание:
This timely collection provides an accessible discussion and analysis of some of the most urgent policy issues facing early childhood care and education in the United States: fragmented policy systems; broad disregard for early years professionals exemplified by low pay; standards that fail to increase equity; and overlooking the role community contexts plays in producing or ameliorating social inequalities among children. Contributors draw upon their deep personal experiences with these issues as educators, scholars, and advocates to advance practice-based recommendations for how the nation's inequitable systems can be transformed. Their call to collective action is supported by an accessible and powerful advocacy toolkit that will grow with readers over time and with practice. The text centers the perspectives of Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color, with a clear focus on the effects of systemic racism, ageism, sexism, classism, and associated oppressions on early years policies and programs in the U.S.
Book Features:
Concise essays that acknowledge the demands on contemporary readers' time.
Authors that represent a cross section of educators, advocates, researchers, and leaders who are in dialogue with each other.
Personal stories that illustrate how policies and systems affect people, making an urgent case for transforming early care and education policies.
A call for action that includes tools for linking personal reflection to collective action.

Discover how a group of mostly Black parents, working with an energetic principal and dedicated staff, helped build a sought-after, multiracial school in Brooklyn's rapidly gentrifying Bedford-Stuyvesant—a neighborhood where parents have long been dissatisfied with most of their local public schools. Under the leadership of PTA President Keesha Wright Sheppard and Principal Jeremy Daniel, the parents and staff at Brighter Choice Community School confront myriad problems both within the school and outside of the school's control. Challenges include the legacy of decades of housing discrimination, redlining, and disinvestment in Brooklyn; the high rates of homelessness and asthma that make it so hard for children to succeed; and a global pandemic that disproportionately hit people of color. The roots of educational inequality are deep, and not easily overcome without tackling racial and income inequality in our society as a whole. Yet, as this book demonstrates, parents are not powerless. This is the inspirational story of how parents overcame the past and created an equitable school within an unequal city.
Book Features:
Follows a multiracial group of parents, working with an effective principal and staff, as they begin to bridge the deep divides of race and class.
Shows why school integration is so difficult to achieve, even in integrated neighborhoods, because of the weight of historical inequalities and mistrust between groups.
Incorporates social science research to show the impact of school and neighborhood conditions on academic achievement.
Argues that socioeconomic integration offers the best hope for improving schools, but only if school leaders take care not to marginalize children from low-income families.
Draws on interviews with parents and staff, school visits and observations, newspaper articles, scholarly books, and policy reports on school segregation.
Описание: Join the authors of this book in starting a movement of hope and possibility for an antiracist child care and early childhood education system. This volume disrupts mental models regarding where the work of early care and education began and how the stigma of that beginning relegates present-day child care workers to a low-status field of practice.

Описание: Early childhood is a crucial stage in a child's life, and aspects of the environment in the physical, social-emotional, cognitive, and health and safety domains all play important roles in shaping children's development during these early years. Having a valid and reliable measure of the quality of these aspects of children's care settings is critical. The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS-3) is the leading research-based instrument for examining these influential global factors that directly impact children in early childhood environments. In this new guide, readers will find an in-depth description of both the conceptual model underlying the ECERS-3 and innovative ways of analyzing data for a fuller understanding of what can be done with the scale and why it is integral to the evaluation of early care and education. The authors analyze a large database of classroom observations to help ECERS-3 users better understand, interpret, and utilize their own findings. Readers will also see how components of their ECERS-3 data relate to one another, within and across subscales, and within the scale as a whole.A Guide to Analyzing and Interpreting ECERS-3 Data will assist program directors, agency administrators, preK–K teaching coaches/mentors, school principals, researchers, and others who use the ECERS-3 to more successfully document, interpret, and analyze the quality of essential influential factors in an early learning setting. This resource will help guide program improvement initiatives with insight into what is needed for children's development and learning.Book Features: Provides a framework for thinking about how early childhood care and education learning environments fit into the larger picture of influences on children's development. Presents a theory of change that combines understanding how children learn and develop with how early education and care affect long-term outcomes. Analyzes what ECERS-3 data looks like for a large sample of classrooms and by different child and teacher characteristics. Includes full color tables and figures illuminating the data analysis of the classroom observations.
