Описание:
Adolescents and emerging adults today spend an estimated seven hours daily attending to media. The media teens attend to commonly present relationships between men and women as a "game" or "competition" in which women seduce through their physical appearance and the masculinity of men is defined through sexual conquest. A growing body of research suggests that viewing this sexualized media may contribute to adolescents’ and emerging adults’ understanding of and behaviors around romantic and sexual relationships. Using social cognitive theory of gender development, scripting theory, and heterosexual script theory as a framework, Scripting Adolescent Romance presents methods and analyses of data from in-depth interviews with 16 high school and young college students, and focus groups with over 100 individuals in this age group. Findings provide a rarely seen view inside youths’ private spaces—their bedrooms and their social media spaces. In often highly-personal conversations, youth provide in-depth information about how they understand and navigate virginity, romantic relationships, sexual situations, and interpersonal violence. Their discussions of "Netflix and chill," Facebook stalking, and the scorecard script illuminate aspects of romance and sex that may be uniquely characteristic of today’s young people. This book is a must-read for parents of adolescents, and promises to be an enjoyable, insightful text for classes about media effects, adolescent development, gender roles, and sexual health.

Описание:
In 2003, Wendy Luttrell posed an important question: what might result if we were able to turn questions of judgement about pregnant and parenting teenagers into questions of interest about their sense of self and identity-making? This book takes up the challenge, offering a re/assemblage of what is, can be and perhaps should be known about teenage pregnancy and parenting in the context of the twenty-first century. The collection presents original contributions from leading commentators in four key contexts: the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Aotearoa New Zealand and the Republic of Ireland, all sites of elevated incidence of and/or concern around what is commonly articulated as the problem of teenage pregnancy and parenting. In offering a multi-disciplinary reading of the narratives of young men and women, this volume engages with the ambiguity shared by all of us in confronting the life transition that is pregnancy and parenting.

Описание: Real World, Real Challenges: Adolescent Issues in Contemporary Society provides a comprehensive overview of adolescent psychology. The book uses a problem-based learning format to engage students, facilitate learning and retention, and foster critical thinking skills. The introduction explains how biological, psychological, and social factors have redefined adolescence over the past century. Specific chapters are devoted to issues such as school and dating violence, mood and eating disorders, sexuality, and the impact of technology and social media. Rather than focusing on theory the learning modules of the text use these common, contemporary issues to illustrate important developmental psychology concepts. Many standard texts on the subject matter can be dry and lack focus on topics of interest to today's learners. Real World, Real Challenges uses a fresh, applied approach and encourages readers to confront the real world problems young people face in contemporary society. The book is most appropriate for advanced, undergraduate courses in adolescent psychology or classes that take an applied approach to adolescent development.

The point of leaving care has been identified as a potentially critical turning point at which services might moderate later outcomes. While there is growing evidence identifying social support and identity development as crucial elements, there remains a gap in the understanding of the care-leaving process from the perspective of young people. Youth Transitions Out of State Care: Being Recognized as Worthy of Care, Respect, and Support presents a newly developed theoretical framework for understanding this process.
Supported by research from a qualitative longitudinal study of leaving state care at the age of 18, Dr. Natalie Glynn presents an intimate account of the personal circumstances and structural elements influencing the transitions of rural and urban young people in Ireland using three illustrative cases that break new ground by centering on the voices of young people and their distinct yet interconnected experiences. Pulling together agentic and structural elements in the transition to explain how young people’s choices and reactions are influenced by their personal journeys and socio-cultural contexts, Glynn creates a new theoretical framework that social workers and researchers can use to comprehend this transition period when working with care leavers.
Utilizing Ireland as a case study of the increasingly prevalent model of aftercare provision, Youth Transitions Out of State Care: Being Recognized as Worthy of Care, Respect, and Support details broad policy implications and presents an opportunity to understand how this approach to supporting care leavers works in practice.
