Описание: This book covers a significant number of R&D projects, performed mostly after 2000, devoted to the understanding and prevention of performance degradation processes in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). The extent and severity of performance degradation processes in PEFCs were recognized rather gradually. Indeed, the recognition overlapped with a significant number of industrial dem- strations of fuel cell powered vehicles, which would suggest a degree of technology maturity beyond the resaolution of fundamental failure mechanisms. An intriguing question, therefore, is why has there been this apparent delay in addressing fun- mental performance stability requirements. The apparent answer is that testing of the power system under fully realistic operation conditions was one prerequisite for revealing the nature and extent of some key modes of PEFC stack failure. Such modes of failure were not exposed to a similar degree, or not at all, in earlier tests of PEFC stacks which were not performed under fully relevant conditions, parti- larly such tests which did not include multiple on-off and/or high power-low power cycles typical for transportation and mobile power applications of PEFCs. Long-term testing of PEFCs reported in the early 1990s by both Los Alamos National Laboratory and Ballard Power was performed under conditions of c- stant cell voltage, typically near the maximum power point of the PEFC.

Описание:
Durability of Ceramic-Matrix Composites presents the latest information on these high-temperature structural materials and their outstanding advantages over more conventional materials, including their high specific strength, high specific modulus, high temperature resistance and good thermal stability. The critical nature of the application of these advanced materials makes it necessary to have a complete understanding of their characterization.
This book focuses explicitly on the durability of CMCs and will be extremely valuable for materials scientists and engineers who are dealing with the simulation of durability response and fatigue of ceramic matrix composites.
Durability and Reliability of Polymers and Other Materials in Photovoltaic Modules describes the durability and reliability behavior of polymers used in Si-photovoltaic modules and systems, particularly in terms of physical aging and degradation process/mechanisms, characterization methods, accelerated exposure chamber and testing, module level testing and service life prediction. The book compares polymeric materials to traditional materials used in solar applications, explaining the degradation pathways of the different elements of a photovoltaic module, including encapsulant, front sheet, back sheet, wires and connectors, adhesives, sealants and more. The book shows degradation causes and the specific influence this degradation has on materials and overall PV performance.
The book also shows the tests needed for the evaluation of polymer degradation and aging, as well as accelerated tests to aid in materials selection. Demand for photovoltaics continues to grow worldwide, and polymer photovoltaics can offer significantly lower production costs compared to earlier approaches. This has the potential to significantly improve the value proposition of solar energy; however, photovoltaic module lifetime and degradation mechanisms are of significant importance. Providing practical guidance, as well as giving an outlook on the future of materials in photovoltaic applications, the book is the first comprehensive reference work in the area of photovoltaic polymer durability.
Provides comprehensive coverage of photovoltaic polymers, from the fundamental degradation mechanisms to specific case studies of durability and materials failure
Offers practical, actionable information in relation to service life prediction of photovoltaic modules and accelerated testing for materials selection
Includes up-to-date information and interpretation of safety regulations and testing of photovoltaic modules and materials

Описание:
Durability of Composite Systems meets the challenge of defining these precepts and requirements, from first principles, to applications in a diverse selection of technical fields selected to form a corpus of concepts and methodologies that define the field of durability in composite material systems as a modern discipline. That discipline includes not only the classical rigor of mechanics, physics and chemistry, but also the critical elements of thermodynamics, data analytics, and statistical uncertainty quantification as well as other requirements of the modern subject. This book provides a comprehensive summary of the field, suited to both reference and instructional use.
It will be essential reading for academic and industrial researchers, materials scientists and engineers and all those working in the design, analysis and manufacture of composite material systems.
This five-volume set of titles focuses on advanced characterization techniques used for the analysis of composite materials developed from natural fibre/ biomass, synthetic fibres and a combination of these materials used as fillers and reinforcements to enhance materials performance and utilization in automotive, aerospace, construction and building components.
The books provide detailed information on failure analysis, mechanical and physical properties, structural health monitoring, durability and life prediction, modelling of damage processes of natural fibre, synthetic fibres, and natural/natural, and natural/synthetic fibres hybrid composites. They will act as a detailed reference resource to encourage future research in natural fiber and hybrid composite materials, which is much in demand due to the need for more sustainable, recyclable, and eco-friendly composites in a broad range of different application fields.
Written by leading experts in the field and covering composite materials developed from different natural fibers and their hybridization with synthetic fibers, the chapters provide cutting-edge up-to-date research on the characterization, analysis and modelling of composite materials.
