Baxter`s use of Greek myth is close to the heart of his poetic vision, this draws on the subject`s entire career, mounting the first-ever sustained investigation of his vast corpus of unpublished poems. Baxter`s mythic figures and ambiguous symbols are explored, to which he repeatedly returned in his attempts to establish patterns out of the `chaos` of his experiences.
In this ground-breaking study, Dr Robert MacCann cuts through the tangle of myth and legend to identify the earliest Arthurian sources, three sixth-century Welsh poems by Arthur's bard that give eyewitness accounts. The poems miraculously survived for 800 years, while the Welsh language was evolving, to be preserved in a manuscript of the early 1300s. They reveal the truth about Arthur, showing him to be an authoritative Christian king with an unparalleled military reputation, revered by his men. Most astonishing of all, two of the poems record a disastrous sea voyage to a distant land, Annwfyn, where the Britons fought torrid battles against the inhabitants but were eventually decimated. From details in the poems Dr MacCann shows that Annwfyn was America. Arthur's death is mentioned twice, one poem implying that the badly wounded Arthur was given a mercy killing by his bard and was beheaded to protect his head from mutilation. Only a few survivors reached Britain but Arthur's body remained in Annwfyn, his grave being lost.

Описание: Athens and Rome stand side by side as the parents of Western civilisation. The resemblances between Rome and Greece even from the first are very clearly marked. In many respects they are visibly of the same family, and, though we no longer speak as confidently of "Aryan" and "Indo-European" as did the ethnologists and philologists of the nineteenth century, yet there remains an obvious kinship of language, customs, and even dress.
From steamships to steam rooms and sweat lodges to sweatshops, processes of pleasures and desire have shaped the regulation and classification of bodies in a wide variety of colonial settings. On beaches and online, and in boardrooms, temples, and taverns, sexual practices have always influenced imperial power relations. In the many places and relationships where colonialism still affects economics, sex and sexuality remain a driving—if sometimes hidden—force. The contributors to this provocative issue contemplate empire as a global process involving sexualized subjects and objects, with essays that consider the history of sex and (or in) empire across several disciplines. Their topics include a "bewitched" nun in colonial Peru, contemporary call-center workers in the Philippines, and General Douglas MacArthur’s mixed-race Filipina mistress, among many others.
