Описание:
It all started around sixty years ago when a young boy witnessed an earthquake that caused detrimental harm to an innocent community. The unfortunate event left a deep impression on him. He couldn't forget that when he would ask about it, he would only be told that they must have done something bad to anger the god. Even though he was still young, he did not find the answer convincing. He then devoted almost all his waking moments to thinking about and making sense of what happened that day. He wondered what could have been done to prevent it, leaving him in a disarray of thoughts. This became a stimulant for his inquisitive mind and an incentive to strive to understand disaster-like events. In the case of earthquakes, his struggle resulted in two books and more than fifty research articles.
The present book reflects the boy's (who is now an old man) life experiences and from looking at the world around him as an insider, outsider, majority, minority, winner, loser, believer, denier, single, married, student, teacher, son, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and enemy. His quest for finding answers to his many questions led him to live and work in places such as Belgium, England, Germany, Italy, Iran, and the United States. In his pass/journey, he had to deal with a hard childhood, poverty, health issues (both physical and mental), revolution, war, shortage, pain and suffering around him, and the stress of learning different languages and adjusting to different cultures. Through these hardships, he learned a great deal about the dynamic aspects of life and the changes that take place accordingly. The book reflects all this together with his multicultural background and views on topics such as social values, living, faith, mathematics, sports, and health.

Описание: This book offers ground-breaking insights on how the dynamics of conditional inclusion and "good" citizenship play out today, with a focus on migrant and immigrant-origin minorities in Europe and the Americas. The book shows that conditional inclusion is a globally widespread tool for controlling and rank-ordering minorities.

Throughout most of the eighteenth century and particularly during the religious revivals of the Great Awakening, evangelical women in colonial New England participated vigorously in major church decisions, from electing pastors to disciplining backsliding members. After the Revolutionary War, however, women were excluded from political life, not only in their churches but in the new republic as well. Reconstructing the history of this change, Susan Juster shows how a common view of masculinity and femininity shaped both radical religion and revolutionary politics in America.
Juster compares contemporary accounts of Baptist women and men who voice their conversion experiences, theological opinions, and proccupation with personal conflicts and pastoral controversies. At times, the ardent revivalist message of spiritual individualism appeared to sanction sexual anarchy. According to one contemporary, revival attempted "to make all things common, wives as well as goods." The place of women at the center of evangelical life in the mid-eighteenth century, Juster finds, reflected the extent to which evangelical religion itself was perceived as "feminine"—emotional, sensional, and ultimately marginal.
In the 1760s, the Baptist order began to refashion its mission, and what had once been a community of saints—often indifferent to conventional moral or legal constraints—was transformed into a society of churchgoers with a concern for legitimacy. As the church was reconceptualized as a "household" ruled by "father" figures, "feminine" qualities came to define the very essence of sin. Juster observes that an image of benevolent patriarchy threatened by the specter of female power was a central motif of the wider political culture during the age of democratic revolutions.
This book situates migrating individuals’ sense of Otherness in receiving countries front and center and systematically illustrates the configuration of Western migrants’ Other-identity during their reverse migration from the West to China, which has become a new destination of international migration due to its rise to prominence in the global labor market. Consequently, international migrants from Western countries, especially those with skills desired in China, have become this country’s main target in the global race for talent. In this context, this book attends to American migrants on the Chinese mainland, who are perceived as the prototypical waiguoren in this region, as an illuminating case, and illustrates the configuration of their Other-identity, rising from their intercultural adaptation as the privileged but marginalized Other in an asymmetric power structure. This book also attempts to reveal the condition and process of Chinese Othering of American migrants that exists but is far less openly discussed in China.
Описание: In THE HONORABLE OUTSIDERS Jack Higgins offers up an intensely atmospheric tale set during the tense days in Spain in the years leading up to the Spanish Civil War. A short, stately coming-of-age novel, we see this era anew through the eyes of a young Cambridge-educated, emotionally repressed Irishman who arrives in Andalusia to tutor the young children of a large landowner, surrounded by a countryside seething with poverty but bound inextricably by tradition. The portrait Higgins paints of this society beginning to tear apart is exacting and unforgettable, as his hero finds himself caught up in the maelstrom and must confront his own core set of values and beliefs. Readers interested in Spanish history, twentieth-century Europe, and struggles for political and economic equality will want to read HONORABLE OUTSIDERS, an insightful piece of historical fiction about an important but relatively unknown period in during Spain's twentieth century. While much has been written about the Spanish Civil War, little has been written about the short, volatile period preceding the Civil War that followed the ouster of General Miguel Primo de Rivera, known as the Second Republic. The period began with a left-wing coalition government that promoted a number of social reforms including education for the mass public, which plays a central part in this book. THE HONORABLE OUTSIDERS provides an astute view into the culture and politics of early twentieth-century Andalusia. As Edwin challenges social norms by promoting education for the peasants and befriending them, the reader learns much about the class conflict of the time, as well as conflict between the Church and social conservatives on one hand, and those seeking reform, including Spain's intelligentsia and honorable outsiders, on the other.
